“CELEBRATE TODAY”

There are two days … yesterday and today.

Tomorrow has not come yet; yesterday is beyond our control, but today can be a day of celebration.

Let me explain.

There is the story of the young boy who befriended an older gentleman who was his next door neighbor. Since his own father died, the neighbor was like a father to the boy. They spent a considerable amount of time together and the older gentleman not only taught the boy how to work with wood, but offered words of wisdom along the way. There was one thing curious about the man. He had a little gold box that the boy admired but was never told what was in the box.

The boy grew up. In the process of maturing into a young adult, he was too busy to think about his past and barely had enough time for his wife and son. One day he received the sad news that his older friend had died. The man had no children and most of his relatives had died.

He cleared his calendar and took the next flight home for the funeral. He pondered the positive influence his neighbor had on him and admitted he would not be in the building business had it not been for him. After he returned home, he was surprised to receive a package in the mail with his former neighbor’s name on the return address.

When he opened the mystery box he found a beautiful gold pocket watch including an engraved message, “Thank you for your time.”

He came to realize the most important gift he had given his neighbor was his time. He was immediately convicted of his need to spend more time with his family … his greatest treasure. And he did.

Point: The most valuable gift we can give God is our life. The most valuable gift we can give those we love is our time.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to celebrate today and every day. Amen.

Obituaries Murray HARRISON AGE 66 – PLAINWELL, MI

Murray passed away surrounded by his family at Borgess Hospital on June 21, 2016. He was born on May 3, 1950 in Plainwell, MI to David and Eleanor (Harris), who preceded him in death. Murray was one of four children. After attending St. Margaret’s Catholic School, kindergarten through 8th grade, and graduating from Plainwell High School, he attended Western Michigan University’s business college. He then worked as a tool and die repairman at Georgia Pacific before moving to Alaska to work on the oil pipelines for a short time.

Once his father was ready to retire from the family business, Murray returned to Plainwell to take over and run Harrison’s True Value Hardware Store for 25 years until his retirement in 2000. He was known to people in the community as a “jack of all trades”. Murray had an incredible knowledge of all things mechanical, and many community members knew him to be a trusted business owner whom they relied on to fix their equipment, no matter the size.

Although he was known to have a tough exterior and be a bit rough around the edges, people who were closest to Murray knew he had a very kind, tender heart and would do anything for his loved ones. He enjoyed puttering in his yard and flower gardens, tinkering with his tools, working on his computer, telling jokes, and sipping beer with friends. Murray was an avid animal lover, especially his beloved dog and companion, Roxie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David, and David’s wife, Wanda. He is survived by his love, his partner of 24 years, Sandra Kelly, as well as four children and two stepchildren: John, Jamie, Cory, and Justin Harrison, Jason (Christine, Spencer, Sydney) Koehrn of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Kelly Koehrn of Kalamazoo. Also surviving is a brother, Paul (Sandy) Harrison of Wayland and a sister, Suzette (Gary) of Allegan.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends; may he rest in peace. Friends may visit with Murray’s family at St. Margaret’s Church in Otsego, MI on Friday, July 8th at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Donald Klingler officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kalamazoo Animal Rescue.

Dustin passed away June 19, 2016 in Otsego. He was born April 10, 1984 in Plainwell to Frederick Platteborze Jr. and Candy (Long) Pradon. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves. For several years he had worked at JBS Packerland in Plainwell and was currently employed at the Burroughs Corporation in Kalamazoo. Dustin was a great cook and enjoyed barbeques, a cold PBR, being outside and most of all spending time with his family. Surviving are his parents; fiancée, Kasandra McMeekan; children, Destiny, Sierra and Grant; siblings, Ashley Hatfield, Kaitlyn Jankowski, Dana Russell, Jack Abrams and Austen Smith; grandparents, Nina and Gramps Vanfleet and Fred Platteborze Sr. and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Papa Long; grandmother, Wanda Greenham; step-father, John Pradon and brother-in-law, Matthew Jankowski. Cremation has taken place.

Norma Jean (Fuller) TODD AGE 76 – OTSEGO, MI

Norma passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016.

Norma was born February 19, 1940. Norma lived in the Otsego area for over 40 years, she worked as a fork lift driver and press operator for many years at Kalamazoo Stamping & Die, later Tower Automotive until she retired in 2001. Norma was passionate about everything in life and she would sacrifice anything for anybody, Norma was a God fearing, very hard working woman that loved her family. She loved animals, especially horses, and she raised Dobermans and Rottweilers. She loved bird watching, and also loved to go to yard sales as much as possible. Surviving are 3 children; son Lawrence Allen (Rhonda) Todd, daughter Dee All (Daniel) Trolard, son William Alexander Todd III, stepson Lon Todd; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister Linda (Carl) Sparks, brothers James (Pam) Fuller, George Fuller, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Doreen Fuller, sisters Phyllis Phelps, Sue Cardiff, step children Tim, Todd and Kristine Jordan. According to her wishes cremation has taken place, a graveside service will take place at a later date.
