2012 Otsego Township Consumer Confidence Report WATER QUALITY

Is my water safe? We are pleased to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This report is designed to provide details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to standards set by regulatory agencies. This report is a snapshot of last year's water quality. We are committed to providing you with information because informed customers are our best allies.

Do I need to take special precautions? Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.

EPA/Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Water Drinking Hotline (800-426-4791) Where does my water come from? Otsego Drinking water is supplied by three ground water wells located near the water tower.

How can I get involved? We invite public participation in decisions that affect drinking water quality. Otsego Township Board meets on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 pm, at 400 N. 16th Street, Otsego, Michigan. Description of Water Treatment Process: Your water is treated by disinfection. Disinfection involves the addition of chlorine or other disinfectant to kill dangerous bacteria and microorganisms that may be in the water. Disinfection is considered to be one of the major public health advances of the 20th century.

Water Conservation Tips: Did you know that the average U.S. household uses approximately 400 gallons of water per day or 100 gallons per person per day? Luckily, there are many low-cost and no-cost ways to conserve water. Small changes can make a big difference – try one today and soon it will become second nature.

• Take short showers - a 5 minute shower uses 4 to 5 gallons of water compared to up to 50 gallons for a bath.

• Shut off water while brushing your teeth, washing your hair and shaving and save up to 500 gallons a month.

• Use a water-efficient showerhead. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and can save you up to 750 gallons a month.

• Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

• Water plants only when necessary.

• Fix leaky toilets and faucets. Faucet washers are inexpensive and take only a few minutes to replace. To check your toilet for a leak, place a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak.

Fixing it or replacing it with a new, more efficient model can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

• Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered. Apply water only as fast as the soil can absorb it and during the cooler parts of the day to reduce evaporation.

• Teach your kids about water conservation to ensure a future generation that uses water wisely. Make it a family effort to reduce next month's water bill!

Cross Connection Control Survey: The purpose of this survey is to determine whether a cross-connection may exist at your home or business. A cross connection is an unprotected or improper connection to a public water distribution system that may cause contamination or pollution to enter the system. We are responsible for enforcing cross-connection control regulations and insuring that no contaminants can, under any flow conditions, enter the distribution system. If you have any of the devices listed below please contact us so that we can discuss the issue, and if needed, survey your connection and assist you in isolating it if that is necessary.

Source Water Protection Tips: Protection of drinking water is everyone’s responsibility. You can help protect your community’s drinking water source in several ways: • Eliminate excess use of lawn and garden fertilizers and pesticides – they contain hazardous chemicals that can reach your drinking water source.

• Pick up after your pets.

• If you have your own septic system, properly maintain your system to reduce leaching to water sources or consider connecting to a public sewer system.

• Dispose of chemicals properly; take used motor oil to a recycling center.

• Volunteer in your community. Find a watershed or wellhead protection organization in your community and volunteer to help.

If there are no active groups, consider starting one. Use EPA’s Adopt Your Watershed to locate groups in your community, or visit the Watershed Information Network’s How to Start a Watershed Team.

• Organize a storm drain stenciling project with your local government or water supplier. Stencil a message next to the street drain reminding people “Dump No Waste - Drains to River” or “Protect Your Water.” Produce and distribute a flyer for households to remind residents that storm drains dump directly into your local water body.

Additional Information for Lead: If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Otsego Township is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

WATER QUALITY DATA TABLE

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The table below lists all of the drinking water contaminants that we detected during the calendar year of this report. Although many more contaminants were tested, only those substances listed below were found in your water. All sources of drinking water contain some naturally occurring contaminants. At low levels, these substances are generally not harmful in our drinking water. Removing all contaminants would be extremely expensive, and in most cases, would not provide increased protection of public health. A few naturally occurring minerals may actually improve the taste of drinking water and have nutritional value at low levels. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done in the calendar year of the report. The EPA or the State requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants do not vary significantly from year to year, or the system is not considered vulnerable to this type of contamination. As such, some of our data, though representative, may be more than one year old. In this table you will find terms and abbreviations that might not be familiar to you. The Shepherd Psalm - Psalm 23

AGE 71 – MARTIN Glen E. Miller passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at his home.

Glen was born August 11, 1941 to Lloyd H. and Doris O. (Taylor) Miller in Grant, MI. He was a 1959 graduate of Wayland High School. Glen was proud of his 27 years he worked as a welder and in maintenance at the GM plant in Portage, MI. He was known for being a loving family man and being into motorcycles. Survivors include: Children Dan Miller, Tina (Tom) Morrell; grandchildren Dana Jo Miller, Chris (Erica) Miller, Amber Miller, Katie Miller, Jacob Morrell, Onna Miller, Levi Miller, Cody Morrell; great-grandchildren Hailey Snyder, Caylee Miller, Leiah Miller, Colt Miller, Brooke Miller, brothers Jerry Miller, Ernie (Deb) Miller, Helen Miller, inlaws Diane Perin, George (Mary) Snider, Robert (Mary) Snider, Ronald (Sandy) Snider, Marg Snider, Deb Cox. Preceding Glen in death are his parents, wife Darlene Miller, brother Earl Miller, mother and father-in-law Kate and George Snider.

When he finished, the great orator received a standing ovation and the audience demanded an encore.

When the older gentleman finished, there was complete prayer-like silence.

After a period of awkward silence, the younger, more polished, gentleman rose and said, “Friends, I wish to make a statement. You asked me to come back and repeat the psalm, but you remained silent when my friend here was seated. The difference? I shall tell you. I know the Psalm, but he knows the Shepherd.” Do you know the Shepherd?

Roslyn “Rosie” (Venema) COOK

Daniel Roland EARLE AGE 55 – MARTIN

Joyce Ann SHATTUCK

Roslyn ‘Rosie’ (Venema) Cook passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013, in Allegan. Rosie was born April 21, 1934, in Otsego, the only child of Henry and Elizabeth (Sisson) Venema. In high school Rosie worked at Colburn’s Drug Store as a soda jerk. This is where she met the love of her life, Hadley. After graduating from Otsego High School in 1952 she attended Ford’s School of Nursing in Detroit. Rosie was an excellent cook and everyone enjoyed sitting at her table. She was a member of the Allegan Congregational Church. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting, reading and flower gardening. On January 10, 1953, in Otsego she married Hadley Cook, who died in 2002. Also preceding her in death were her parents and her son, Gregory Cook.

Surviving are two daughters, Nanette Root of Otsego, Christine Cook of Allegan; daughter-in-law, LouAnn Cook of Otsego; grandson, Austin Root (Carrie Barnhart) of Kalamazoo; granddaughter, Josie (Kristopher) Alderman of Otsego; and a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Alderman. Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be held later. Contributions in memory of Rosie may be made to the Allegan Congregational Kitchen or the Otsego District Public Library. Daniel passed away June 14, 2013 with his family present. A memorial will be held at Martin Reformed Church, Martin on June 22, 2013 at 11:00am. He was born in Plainwell, MI to Roland & Betty Earle on November 29, 1957. Dan attended Martin High School. He lived and worked as a roofer in Martin for many years and had an amazing passion for horses and dogs.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Dan leaves behind his loving, caring wife Annette. He is survived by his sister Susan Henningson of Shelbyville, step daughter Migen Kelley, of Wayland; his pride and joy his grandchildren Brody and Natalie Glaser, father-in-law Ed Erway of Gun Lake and nieces Melissa Straub, Monica DeHaan, Mindi Prenatt all of Wayland. Dan is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Phil Henningson, motherin-law Thelma Erway.

Joyce Shattuck, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Shattuck was born August 17, 1939 in Otsego to Robert and Pauline (Bittenbender) Griffith and had been a lifelong resident of the area.

For many years she was employed with the Lake St., Kalamazoo and Plainwell Burger Chefs. She had many fond memories of her friends and co-workers there.

Joyce had been active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Little League. In her leisure time she enjoyed bowling, fishing and the Little River Casino. On February 24, 1956 in Otsego she married Raymond Shattuck, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters and two sons, Debra (Chuck) Rheautt of Baltimore, MD, Michael Shattuck of Lansing, Karen Young of Parchment and Raymond P. Shattuck and dear friend Peter Pappas of Bennington, VT; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Paula (Tom) Stevenson of Otsego and Pat Carpenter of Spanish Fork, UT; and an uncle, Ebby Griffith of Delton; many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Graveside Service at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 25, 2013.

Joyce M. Lapham died June 17, 2013.

Joyce was born March 15, 1937 to Frederick & Helen (Weber) Fuss. She spent her career doing the bookkeeping for the family’s heating and cooling business.

Joyce was preceded in death by her daughter Renee Boersma and her brother Chuck Fuss. She is survived by her husband Jim, her children Ronda (Tim) Beeke and Ryan (Michelle Hannink) Lapham; her grandchildren Nick & Nate Boersma, Zackary (Maria) Beeke, Tyanna (fiancé Eric Beebe) Beeke, Rylee (fiancé Logan Meade) Lapham, Kali Lapham; greatgrandchildren Autumn, Hannah, Sophia, Jayce, & Isabella; her siblings Thomas Fuss, Jerry Fuss, Joan (Bill) Germain, Maryjo (Dan) Heckman, Doug (Penny) Fuss, and Jane (Steve) Drewyor as well many other relatives. Lucille passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on June 19, 2013. She was born April 16th, 1925. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Stacey, who passed away in 2002. Lucille was very loved and gave much love in return to her children and grandchildren which includes two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon and Jim Bevins of Plainwell & Barbara Kortes of Kalamazoo. Mary Jean AREHART AGE 83 – PLAINWELL

Mary Jean Arehart went to be with the Lord on June 17, 2013 at Holland Community Hospital.

Mary Jean is the daughter of Charles and Hazel Arehart. She was born on Sept. 17, 1929. She was a miracle baby at only three pounds, she fit in a shoebox.

Mary Jean’s family includes her brother Robert Arehart and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings Esther Fleming, Helen Teders, Lew Arehart, Velma Hicks, Carl Arehart and Johnnie Arehart. Mary Jean enjoyed playing Bingo, reading and going out to restaurants. A graveside service was held on Thursday, June 20 at St. Margaret Cemetery in Otsego. Memorial donations can be made to Saint Margaret’s Catholic Church.

Jean Annette (Peters) KIRVAN AGE 64 – HARRISON, TENNESSEE (formerly of Allegan)

Jean passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Allegan, Michigan to Dallas and Mary (Byell) Peters. She was a graduate of Allegan High School. She was a resident of Harrison, Tennessee for the past 36 years and was a former employee of Kal-Equip in Otsego. Jean retired from M&M Mars Candy Company in Cleveland, Tenn. Jean loved to play cards with family and friends and was an avid U of M sports fan. Surviving is her loving husband, James Kirvan, whom she married 47 years ago in the Allegan Presbyterian Church. Also surviving is her son, Darren Kirvan of Nashville, Tenn; daughter Angela Turner of Ringgold, Georgia; grandchildren, Lindsay Hardesty and Evan Turner also of Ringgold; sisters, Dorothy Alfred of Bloomingdale, Michigan and Naomi O’Connell (Robert) of Venice, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Charlott and Carol and brothers Gary and Roger. Jean’s loving spirit will be missed by both family and friends. Joyce A. BERNER AGE 70 – KALAMAZOO (formerly of Otsego)

Joyce A. Berner passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Berner was born October 9, 1942 in Plainwell to Wayne and Louise (Mollitor) Livingston.

She was a 1960 graduate of Otsego High School and had attended Western Michigan University. Joyce began her career at Kal Equip in Otsego and then stayed home to raise her three children. Later in life she was the proud owner of Looks in Hair Design, a full service salon in Plainwell, for 20 years. Her main and most joyful purpose in life was her family. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. Her love of travel took her and Phil all over the world. Joyce loved her kitties and almost always had a Siamese cat. She also was an avid flower gardener with beautiful roses and other perennials.

Sons, Sean and Brent, remember baking cookies with her all the time. Chocolate chip was their favorite. In 1976 Joyce nominated her mother-in-law, Catherine Berner, for the Mother of the Year Award through WAOP radio in Otsego. She submitted a letter explaining how wonderful and giving Catherine was to her family and others. Catherine raised 6 children and worked full time as a registered nurse. She won the contest and Joyce went on the radio to read the letter that earned her the award. On July 22, 1962 in Kalamazoo she married Philip Berner.

They were longtime residents of Otsego, having lived for 50 years across the street from Leighton’s Mill Pond and currently residing in Royal Estates, Kalamazoo. In 1992, Joyce was reunited with her first son, Todd Albright. This included his wife and two daughters. She was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Otsego.

In September 2011, 49 years after they first pledged their love to each other, Phil and Joyce renewed their vows at St. Margaret’s Church. Surviving are her husband, Philip Berner; daughter, Laurie (Berner) and Tim Andrus; sons, Sean Berner, Brent and Merri (Germain) Berner, Todd and Loyale Albright; grandchildren, Cameron and Marissa Andrus, and Lauren Albright; special cousins, Barb and Wayne Davis; and special friends, Mary and Rick Beauchamp, Bob and Sharon Lombardini. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter, Elizabeth Albright. Mass of Christian Burial with the Rosary recited was celebrated at St. Margaret’s Church June 19, Rev. Fr. Gordon Greene celebrant. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Contributions in memory of Joyce may be made to the Southwest Michigan Alzheimer’s Association. Joyce’s family would like to thank the staff at the Alamo Nursing Home and Borgess Medical Center for their compassionate care.
