One of the great breakthroughs in medical history occurred in l967, when a South African physician, Dr. Christiaan Barnard, performed the first successful human heart transplant.

When interviewed regarding it, Dr. Barnard stated that very often the first request of the patient was to see the old heart. Dr. Barnard would comply with the request by putting the heart in a jar for the patient to see. Quite often the patient would say to the doctor, “Thank you for taking away my old diseased heart and giving me a new one.”

This was the message of the ancient prophet Ezekiel to the exiles in Babylon (Old Testament). The same promise was echoed in Jeremiah 24:7, “I will give them a new heart to know me, that I am the Lord…” Yet they refused to listen. Are we listening?

Jesus traced world problems to the condition of the heart saying, “For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly …” (Mark 7:21-23).

The ministry of Jesus was to change lives by changing hearts. That is why He used terms such as being “born again” (John 3:3), and such phrases as having “life more abundant” (John l0:10) as well as His amazing statement “… whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:26).

To believe in Jesus Christ is to move from spiritual death to eternal life. Jesus, the Great Physician, has the ability to take away our old heart, diseased by sin, and give us a new one.

Why would anyone be content to live with an old heart, when they can have a new one?

Prayer: “Create in me, O Lord, a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

(Psalm 51:l0 K.J.V.) In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Jesus gives us a new heart…a new start… a new spirit…a new life…a new hope… a new future …

“I’m calling about an enforcement action taken by the U.S. Treasury. I advise you to cooperate with us, and help us to help you.”

Often, you may be told you owe years of back taxes to the IRS, and that if you refuse to pay, you'll spend time behind bars.

“All you can do is ignore it,” said Tom Stephens, president of the BBB. “They hope eventually that someone will call back.”

Stephens says the scam that continues because it is working. “If you get a call like that,” advised Stephens, “the best thing you can do is hang up the phone.” According to Stephens, the IRS will never contact customers over the phone regarding notices of payments owed. He said the agency will first contact debtors through U.S. mail.

The Better Business Bureau also issued the following advice for consumers: • Do not rely on caller ID alone to authenticate a caller. Criminals can spoof caller ID numbers.

• Hang up on any caller that makes you uncomfortable or tries to pressure you into making a payment without any written proof of a debt owed.

• Place your phone number on the National DO Not Call Registry and report illegal calls.

The Rotary Club of Plainwell recently initiated and completed an upgrade project for Kenyon City Park.

The project included new playground equipment in the way of a spider climber, balance beam, charcoal grills and a new coat of paint to the picnic pavilion.

Plainwell Rotary secured a matching grant from Rotary District 6360 and raised the remainder of the money through various fundraisers as well as contributions from The City of Plainwell, ConestogaRovers and Associates, JBS, Home Depot and Hardings Market. The project embraces one of the six “Areas of Focus” for Rotary, namely Economic and Community Development. Rotary, through its fundraising activities, the support of the communities and its members; lend support to a multitude of projects and charities that assist people at the local, state, national and international levels. Sharon Cherie CULVER AGE 80 – OTSEGO, MI

Sharon passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 in Plainwell. She was born October 7, 1934 in Onida, SD the daughter of Harry and Pauline (Bohning) McGuire. Sharon had worked for many years in the cafeteria at Plainwell High School. She was a good, honest, Christian woman. Sharon enjoyed sewing, crafting, collecting Christmas pins, bird watching, card club, volunteering and spending time with her family. On August 7, 1954 in Pierre, SD she married Russell Culver. In 1966 she and Russell along with their daughters moved to Otsego where they made their home together. Surviving are her husband, Russell; 2 daughters, Cindy Rae Gordon and Sandra Jean Culver; her 4 grandchildren, Jenna Melwiki, Amanda Melwiki, Kelly Gordon and Tyler Gordon, and her brother, Harland (Nancy) McGuire.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A private family burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Sharon may be made to Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Wilma I. SLESDET

Helen passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 at her home. Helen was born July 2, 1921 in Belding, MI to Clarence and Mary (Miller) Bowen. She enjoyed nature and doing crafts such as crocheting, making dolls and painting; Helen knew her Bible well and more than anything loved her family. On June 16, 1966 in Golden, CO she married Francis Fuseek who survives.

Also surviving are her children, Delores Davis, Edward (Janice) Fuseek, Sandra (Alphonse) Kujacznski, Beth (Larry) Harness and Byllie (Anthony) Riley; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great grandchildren and her brother and sister-in-law, John (Shirley) Bowen.

Helen was preceded in death by a daughter Joyce (Charles) McGaha; siblings, Richard Bowen and Dorothy Pettey; a great-grandson Brad Davis and son-in-law David Davis. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Molly Wieber, Celebrant. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Helen may be made to Autism Alliance of Michigan.

Wilma passed away June 1, 2015 in Kalamazoo.

She was born September 23, 1919 in Otsego, MI to Clarence and Eva (Burt) Livingston. She was the last of 12 children to pass on. On October 16, 1937 she married Gilbert H. Slesdet. Wilma drove school bus for the Plainwell Public Schools for 20 years and also drove the bus for The Borgess School of Nursing until her retirement in the 70's. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert after celebrating their 70th Wedding Anniversary; a grandson in 1969; her parents; eight brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy (James) McNees; granddaughters, Marla (Kevin) Folk, Theresa (Todd) Rogers; four great grandchildren, Jeff and Lauren Folk, Tasha and Jonathan McLaughlinp; two step great grandchildren, Samantha and Evan Rogers and a great great granddaughter Ciara McLaughlin. Per her wishes there will be no funeral or memorial. Cremation has taken place and she will be laid to rest at a later date in Cooper, Michigan. Donations can be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, Kalamazoo Chapter, 222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 100, Kalamazoo, MI 49002-3882.

William Samuel “Sam” Simpson passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2015. Sam was born February 7, 1947 the most beloved son of Florence and Ray Simpson. Sam was always interested in everything and did everything well. He played the lead in Cheaper by the Dozen in high school and built rockets after school, one of the first going astray through the basement window which was all repaired before his mother came home. He graduated from Otsego High School with honors and attended Michigan State University where he met his wife of 43 years, Elaine K. Sheehan. He then attended Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, OR, receiving his Juris Doctor in 1981. After returning to his home town of Otsego he was employed by Old Kent Bank as a commercial loan documentation officer and later specialized in wills and trusts and banking regulations. He served on the Otsego City Commission and helped establish the Otsego Area Historical Society. Sam also had a lifelong interest in amateur radio, his call sign is KC8OZG. His passions were cooking, the Upper Peninsula and animal welfare. In accordance with Sam’s wishes cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Sam may be made to Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance (wishbonepetrescue.org) or to an animal welfare group of your choice.
