The May 6 Election, Non-Homestead Millage On May 6, 2014, Otsego Public Schools is asking voters to renew the current 18-mill Non-Homestead millage. This is NOT an increase, but a 10-year RENEWAL of our current levy that voters passed ten years ago. Here are some facts: Q: Is this a new millage or a millage increase? A: No. This is a renewal. Taxpayers will be paying the same millage rate for this millage as they have paid for the past ten years. Q: What would be the impact to Otsego Public Schools if this millage is defeated? A: Otsego Public Schools receives $1.8 million (of the $19 million budget) annually from this millage. These funds are used for District operating expenses and cannot be replaced by other funding sources. Without these funds, budget cuts would be inevitable. John passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls. He was born on December 23, 1940 in Elkton, SD to Louie and Elsie (Meier) Krogmann. He grew up and attended school in Elkton. After school he joined the Army, where he was stationed in Fort Hood, TX from 1960 to 1963. After being discharged, he moved to West Fargo, ND to work at the stockyards where he met Bonnie Holzworth. John and Bonnie married on November 16, 1963 in West Fargo. They welcomed a daughter, Susie, in 1964 in Minnesota. In 1966, they moved to Otsego, MI, where they had a son, Russ, in 1968. John worked for the City of Otsego until his retirement in 1990. After retirement they moved to Lake Campbell where they lived for 24 years. John spent part of his summers working for Prunty Construction over the next 8 years. He enjoyed beer, sports, fishing, camping at Muskrat Lake, bowling, playing softball, his grandchildren, and traveling with his “wife.” John and Bonnie recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary. John is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Susie Van Eck, Volga; son, Russ Krogmann, Lake Campbell; 5 grand children; four sisters: Marian Krogmann, Fruita, CO; Doris Evink, SD; Marie Krogmann, Otsego, MI; and Deloris Krogmann, Otsego, MI; 2 brothers: David Krogmann, Littleton, CO and Vernon Krogmann, Ivanhoe, MN. John was preceded in death by his parents, brother Louie, and two sisters, Elsie and Lillie. Funeral services were held Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD. Blair “Stubby” Deemer passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Wings Home in Allegan. He was born November 27, 1946 in Brookville, PA to Irvin and Elizabeth (Vandervort) Deemer. For many years he owned and operated a small engine repair business. In his leisure time Stubby enjoyed bowling, going to races at M.I.S., canoeing, Camparoma, bow hunting, wild life videoing, and L.M. He was a member of the Celery City Moose #2694. On October 14, 2004 in Allegan he married Janice Gearing who survives. Also surviving are his children, Stacy Welcher, Steve (Mikkii) Deemer, Sandy Deemer and Scott (Cameron) Deemer; his stepchildren, Allen White and Heather White; 8 grandchildren, Tyler and Brandilee Welcher, Jessica and Stephanie Deemer, Brandon, Megan, Alysha and Logan; 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Irvin “Dick” (Sandy) Deemer, Hazel (Joe) Gaston, Mary Lou (John) Rittenhouse, Daniel Deemer and Mona (Randy) Harriger; and his special nephews, Ryan and Lance Deemer. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-parents; and his son-in-law, Mike Welcher. Friends may visit and share their favorite stories of Stubby with his family from 4-8p.m., Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Contributions in memory of Blair may be made to Wings Home of Allegan.
