Words hurt We learned this when kids called us nasty names in 1st grade like dirtbag, jerk face, loser, peabrain, and scumbag Those words leave a mark We experience wounds caused by words of rejection in 3rd grade “I don’t want to be your friend” really stings In middle school the opposite of that phrase hurts when the person we had a crush on and were convinced had a crush on us says “I just want to be your friend ” Ouch! I remember having a crush on a girl named Maria in my 8th grade class I was so sure she felt the same way So, I sent her a note that read, “I like you Do you like me? Circle yes or no ” In minutes she handed me the returned note I opened it with confidence Then I saw that she circled “no” and wrote “just friends ” Two harsher words have never been spoken I was devastated I listened to Air Supply’s All Out of Love all weekend long and ate an entire bag of Now and Later candy to recover from the word wound Words can leave a mark!

The biblical book of Proverbs has a lot to say about what to say, about the power of words Proverbs 18:21 says it all, "The tongue has the power of life and death ” It’s not just the words spoken about or to us that have power, so do the words that come through us We can’t control the words said about or to us, but we can control the words that come through us So many people around us have been wounded by words “You’re not good enough You’re ugly You’ll never amount to much You’re mediocre You have nothing to offer You are useless ” The wounds caused by words cut deeper and take longer to heal than the physical wounds caused “sticks and stones ” I believe that God often sends words to us that he wants to go through us to others for the sake of their healing In other words, on the tip of your tongue, the ball of your pen, at your fingertips and thumbs is the power of a word to heal a wound God just might give a word to someone through you that will save their marriage, or career, or soul When a word from God comes to you, let is pass through you to the ears of someone whose heart hurts and longs to heal You are loved,
