Calvin (Cal) John BIRD
Chuck passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. He was born April 1, 1942 in Otsego the son of Bill Sr. and Flora (Masten) Moore. Chuck was an Eagle Scout and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam, serving in the Big Red One infantry. For over 30 years he had been a machine tender operating machine #1 Big Moe at Menasha until his retirement. He enjoyed coaching AYSO soccer, was a swim instructor and lifeguard at Shelp’s Resort at Pine Lake and was a Boy Scout Leader. In his spare time Chuck enjoyed woodcarving and antique automobiles. He was a member of the Otsego Elks and a volunteer fireman for the Otsego Fire Department for many years. On April 25, 1970 in Otsego he married Judeth Cary who survives. Also surviving are his children, Chuck Jr. (Jenny) Moore and Jaime Merriam both of Otsego; grandchildren, Cassie (Chase) McPherson, Trey Moore, Emma Moore, Billy Merriam and Jillian Merriam; great-grandson, Clifford McPherson; siblings, Bill Jr. (Gay) Moore and Bonnie (Larry) Eakins along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may pay their final respects and have private viewing time Friday, May 22, 2020 from 9AM-2:30 PM. A private family graveside service will be held at Mountain Home Cemetery, Friday, May 22, 2020 at 3:00 P.M., with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Contributions in memory of Chuck may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or Christian Neighbors.
Calvin passed away peacefully at his home and into the arms of his Savior on May 11th, 2020. He was born at Pennock Hospital in Hastings, MI to Melvin Rex Bird and Fannie Bell (Abbott) Bird on June 30th, 1949. Calvin was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Green on December 16th, 1968. Upon their marriage, Calvin lovingly took on the role of dad and provider to Shirley’s young daughter Tammy. Calvin and Shirley’s love and family continued to grow and on March 9th, 1971 they welcomed their daughter Darcy into the world. Determined to receive his diploma, Calvin graduated alongside Tammy from Plainwell High School in 1986. Calvin was a notable hard worker. He held various jobs throughout his adult life, including several years spent at Murco in Plainwell, before ultimately pursuing a truck driving career until his retirement. Calvin enjoyed cars, trucks and anything with an engine in it. He loved to make his friends and family smile, as he always had a joke to share with them. Calvin’s unwavering faith in Christ Jesus was known to everyone he met. He wouldn’t let you leave without praying for you and saying, “God Bless You!” His joyful heart will be deeply missed. Calvin is survived by his girlfriend, Donna Mead of Allegan, MI; sisters, Eleanor Collins and Helena Molby of Kalamazoo, MI; brother, Norman Bird of W.VA; daughters, Tammy (Jon) Steinhauser of Otsego, MI and Darcy (Pat) Netser of Frankfort, IN; grandchildren Calvin (Nicole) Householder of Norfolk, VA, Chelsea Green (Ryan) of Allegan, MI, Theron Lentz (Ariel) of Kalamazoo, MI, Marlin Steinhauser of Kalamazoo, MI and Amanda Musson of Fraser, MI; great grand children, Eli, Evan and Delaney; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Calvin was preceded in death by his wife Shirley; parents, Melvin and Fannie; and brothers, Art, Harold, Raymond and David. John 3:16-17

Sandi passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born March 11, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Oliver and Gladys (Weiss) Scoble. Sandi was a graduate of Loy Norrix High School. In the early 90’s she had owned and operated County Ladies Truck Brokerage in Bradley and for over 20 years had worked at PNC Bank until her retirement in 2010. In retirement she worked at Walmart as a food sample demonstrator. As a young woman Sandi was a member of the Kalamazoo Jaycees and served as the president. She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed making clothing for her family. In her free time Sandi liked working in her yard, doing home improvements and taking care of her dogs. Surviving are her daughters, Stacey Withee of Otsego and Wendy Withee of Colorado; her granddogs; siblings, Oliver II (Dona) Scoble of Utah, Thomas Scoble of Colorado and Janice Cardinal of Florida along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Frederick Scoble. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Contributions in memory of Sandi may be made to the SPCA of Southwest Michigan or Christian Neighbors. Marjorie passed away May 4, 2020 in Augusta, Georgia. She was born April 9, 1936 in Niles, the daughter of Roy and Bertha (Sparks) Brigham. Marjorie was a 1954 graduate of Berrien Springs High School and had lived in Plainwell, MI, Grass Lake, MI and Augusta, GA. For many years she was a nurse’s aide and lab technician at Chelsea Hospital and was a traveling nurse’s aide in Jackson. She was a loving housewife, mother, grandmother and den mother. Marjorie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Plainwell where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and the First Baptist Church in Augusta, GA., where she participated in the choir and 1st Family Singers. On May 18, 1957 in Berrien Springs she married Bernard Chase who preceded her in death. Surviving are her sons, Michael (Carol) Chase of Augusta, GA., Kevin Chase of Martin, MI and Bradley Chase of Augusta, GA; grandsons, Stephen and Jonathan Chase; sister, Sandra Jones of Wellston, OK along with several nieces and nephews . She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Barbra Henderson and brother, Gordon Brigham. Marjorie’s family would like to thank Alliance Hospice, Friendly Care Companions, Dr. Miriam Atkins Oncologist and family physician, Dr. Andrew VanAlstine for providing their mother with excellent care and compassion. A private graveside service will be held at East Martin Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Tim went to be with his Lord Tuesday May 12, 2020. Many knew him as a mild-mannered, patient, and steadfast servant of God. Anyone could hear his joy for life in his laughter. He so enjoyed his family, fishing on the river, his time in the woods, and working on cars - the older the better. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years, Sue Wolthuis; children Ashley (Josh) Nink and Mitchel Wolthuis; mother, Sally Wolthuis; brothers and sisters Phil (Kathy) Wolthuis, Mike (Jill) Wolthuis, Felicia (David) Rawls, David Wolthuis, and Krystina Wolthuis; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, David Wolthuis and brother, Kenneth Wolthuis. Tim served in the USMC and was a faithful member of Orangeville Baptist Church. The Stay Home Stay Safe order brings to mind an old story told by the great British preacher, W.E. Sangster. He told of going to a zoo. As he was enjoying the sites he came upon an eagle in a cage. He was impressed by the powerful wings and beautiful feathers. As he stood near, someone in the crowd voiced what everyone must have been thinking. “Made for the skies and crammed in a cage.” What does it mean to find freedom in confinement? For one thing, it should give us comfort in knowing that by staying in our homes, we are helping to save lives. Physical isolation is not the same as social isolation. Many have found creative ways to stay in touch with family and friends through social media. Who would have ever thought that social media could become so necessary to daily living? Sometimes we can learn from others. One example is Apostle Paul, a prominent leader in the early church. He preached the gospel, planted churches and wrote thirteen of the twenty-one letters in the New Testament. He also suffered much physical and emotional persecution. In one of his prison letters he wrote, “… I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11 R.S.V.). He added, “I can do all things in him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Can it be that having the right mindset can give us freedom in confinement? Another example is Viktor E. Frankl, a noted Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor. He lost his entire family during the Nazi’s attempted extermination of the Jews. In his bestselling book, Man’s Search for Meaning (1946), he said, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in a given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Can it be that a positive attitude can give us freedom? A final example was former U.S. Senator, John McCain. Earlier in his life he served his country honorably as a Captain in the U.S. Navy (19581981). During that time he spent five and a half years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Reflecting back on his horrific physical and mental torture, he stated, “Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone” (Faith of My Fathers: A Family Memoir). Can a purpose-driven life give us a sense of freedom? We were born to fly. “… those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31 NIV).
Prayer: Dear Lord, give us freedom in Christ and we will be free indeed. In Your strong name we pray. Amen.
