Joyce passed away Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born September 7, 1934 in Luverne, Alabama, the daughter of Raymond and Maude (Wolfe) Ballard. Joyce had been a housekeeper at Alamo Nursing Home until her retirement in 1996. She enjoyed attending the B-93 Birthday Bash and airshows, birdwatching and going out to eat with her family. On February 28, 1958 in Otsego she married Donald Russell who passed away in 1999. Surviving are her children, Donald Russell and Cindy Russell both of Otsego; grandsons, Robert and Brett Russell; siblings, Ila Campbell, Susie Watson, Jean Truax, Bill Campbell and George Campbell along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Loretta Russell and siblings, Carl Ballard, Howard Campbell and Mary Campbell. Funeral services were held, May 8, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Tim Foreman officiated. Burial followed at Trowbridge Cemetery. A wonderful husband, father and friend, Harry Betke, age 63, of Plainwell passed away on March 20, 2019 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Harry was born on May 19, 1955 to Bernard & Beverly (Burmeirster) Betke. A memorial gathering and pig roast will be held on Saturday, May 25 from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Gun Plain Township Hall; 381 8th St. Plainwell, MI 49080. Harry’s family includes his wife of 46 years, Laury; his children: Tracey (Ross) Robrahn, Stacey Betke, Brandy Moran and Andrew Betke; his siblings: Bernie (Peg) Betke and Yvonne DeSmit; his grandchildren: Suzey, Deven, Ryley, Courtney, Isaac, Allissa, Ashton, Mason and Carter; five great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Rusty. Harry graduated from Plainwell High School in 1973. While in school he was a wrestler. Harry worked as a carpenter, a mason and a boilermaker. He was a jack of all trades who could fix anything. He loved to travel and enjoyed fishing. He loved the outdoors. Harry was a motocross racer and later in life enjoyed visiting casinos to play blackjack. He was a good neighbor who plowed the neighborhood and would mow lawns to help out. Harry was a cancer survivor for over 6 years and spent that time traveling with his wife. He was a hard worker who was always willing to help others and will be deeply missed. Eugene (Gene) S. Cronkhite died May 4, 2019 at the Wings Home in Allegan, Michigan. He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Kelly J. Cronkhite, his daughter/son in law, Lorie and Mike Bartz, his granddaughters, McKensie and Samantha and several nieces and nephews. He attended Otsego High School and was a veteran of the Army where he finished his high school academics, received the good conduct medal and served his time in Alaska. For many years Gene worked for Michigan Cottage Cheese and retired from Yoplait USA where he was a member of the Teamsters and Union Steward. For most of his life he enjoyed gardening, hunting, playing cards, dancing, time at the casino, and spending time at the Elks and VFW. Gene was preceded in death by his father, Ivan; mother, Elsie Berry; wife and first love of 40 years Judy; his siblings, Donna Walters and Jim Cronkhite; Bev Gauthier who was the second love of his life of almost 20 years; his sister in law, Sharalyn Davis and brother in law, Carl Walters. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Wings Home and Wings of Hope Hospice for their compassionate care during the final last few months of his life. At Gene’s request cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held at a later date with his children and grandchildren. A wonderful husband, father and friend, Marvin Jacobsen, age 80, of Plainwell passed away on May 6, 2019. Marv was born on June 24, 1938 in Trowbridge Township to Harold & Olive (Burnett) Jacobsen. Marv’s family includes his wife of 59 years, Myrna; his daughter Stacee Mattimore; his grandchildren: Benjamin, Molly, Casey and Monica; his brother David Mullligan; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jerry Mulligan. Marv graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1956. Marv worked as a truck driver for over 38 years. After retirement, he worked for Harold Zeigler. Marv collected antique cars for many years. Robert E. “Bob” BELLINGAR AGE 90 - PLAINWELL, MI
Bob passed away Thursday, May 9, 2019 in Kalamazoo. He was born September 12, 1928 in Watson Township to Lynn Martha (Bump) and Bellingar. Bob served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He had worked as an electrician with IBEW No. 131 for many years. In his free time Bob enjoyed puttering around, playing golf, doing yard work, especially mowing his lawn, fishing, square and round dancing, camping and birdwatching. Bob loved spending time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, especially Liam and Liza. He was a member of the Otsego Elks and a life member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030. Bob had recently taken a trip with Talons Out Honor Flight to Washington DC. On March 23, 1951 he married E. Leone Frost and celebrated their 68th anniversary this year. Surviving are his wife; daughters, Shelley Cassada of Shelbyville and Claudia (Marlin) Stewart of Plainwell; 3 grandchildren, Richard (Angie) Peet, Ashley Stewart and Keshia Stewart; 3 great-grandchildren, David Peet, Liam Baird and Liza Cronk; siblings, Raymond and Roy Bellingar along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Joshua Miller and in-laws, Claude and Imo Frost and Stella Coon. “THE PRAYING MOTHER”

Dan Minor - revdminor@att.net _____________________________________ “The prayer of the righteous person is powerful in what it can achieve” James 5:16 (Common English Bible) Mothers give us many gifts such as love, understanding, wisdom and encouragement. Perhaps the most powerful gift is the gift of prayer. Consider the example of Hannah, an Old Testament person known as “The Praying Mother” (I Samuel 1:20).
She lived during a gloomy time in Israel’s history (Approximately 1050 B.C.). It was a time marked by evil leaders (judges) and corrupt priests. The people were clamoring for an earthly king. When times are bad it is even hard for people of faith to believe in the sovereignty of God. Yet during that time God was working behind the scenes to fulfill God’s purpose.
Hannah was a woman of prayer. Her prayer was that her child would be used in God’s service. Her prayers were sincere, fervent and powerful in results.
Little did she know at the time what her son would become. Her Son, Samuel, became a watershed leader in the history of Israel. Young Samuel grew “both in stature and in favor with the Lord and with the people” (I Samuel 2:26). Frederick Buechner described Samuel as “a combination prophet, judge and oneman band.” At the time the twelve tribes of Israel had been in Canaan for a little over three hundred years. There was great discord among the tribes. Does this sound familiar? As mentioned, the priesthood was racked with corruption and the ruler (judge) was unable to bring the people together.
Hannah’s prayers were answered. She dedicated her son to God and great things happened through Samuel. Samuel was the last of the judges, the first of the prophets and the founder of the monarchy. Samuel called the people back to God.
Most of all, Samuel was a man of prayer (I Samuel 12:19-23). Through prayer he went on to unite the twelve tribes of Israel into one kingdom, under King Saul, the people’s choice. He later anointed King David, God’s choice and Israel’s most loved king (I Samuel 2:10). All of these accomplishments were the result of a mother’s prayers!
I think John Wesley; founder of Methodism, President Abraham Lincoln and President Dwight D. Eisenhower would offer similar testimonies to the power of a mother’s prayers. Tennyson was right, “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.”
During a time of moral corruption and deep polarization, praying mothers may be just what our nation needs to secure our nation’s future. Prayer: May God bless all mothers as well as the memories of mothers who have gone before us. Amen.
