A portion of the Eesley Mill, built in 1869, was originally a roller rink until Eesley purchased it in 1887 and converted it into the Sunshine Flour Mill, originally located at 119 W. I remember like it was yesterday. I was 12 years old when my father and I drove to the Art Hawks farm north of Watervliet. It was the season of Lent. Art’s son, Dale, is my same age. We went with our fathers into the woods where we found a couple of large branches from a tree that had fallen from a winter storm. The branches were hauled by tractor to a pick-up truck. We loaded the branches onto the truck and delivered them to the church where they were made into a large cross which was placed in the front of the altar of my home church for the Community Good Friday service. It stood l0 feet high; an imposing presence and powerful symbol of our Lord’s death. My father (the late Rev. Emerson Minor) began the service by remarking, “I don’t know how our Lord carried it. It took two grown men and two 12 year old boys to get this into the church.” I have studied the Bible and theology most of my life. I have visited the holy spot where tradition marks the place of our Lord’s death. Yet, nothing is more powerful to me than my childhood memory of the cross. This brings to mind that familiar old hymn written by Methodist Evangelist George Bennard, a friend of my late grandfather, Rev. I.W. Minor. Rev. Bennard was rumored to have been at a meeting in Pokagon (between Dowagiac and Niles, MI) in the year l913 when he finished the words of his popular hymn. Sometime between l939-l946 my mother, Eleanor (Minor) Tubergen, remembers the great hymn writer conducting evangelistic services and singing this great hymn in front of a large cross in the sanctuary of our church (Otsego United Methodist Church) … another powerful memory of the cross.

AGE 81 – ALLEGAN Formerly of Otsego

passed away Donna Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Briarwood Assisted Living in Allegan. She was born May 18, 1932 in Allegan, to Ivor and Ruth (Coppock) Coburn. Donna was a 1950 graduate of Allegan High School and for 19 years was a nurse’s aide at Alamo Nursing Home. In her leisure time she enjoyed bowling, reading and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Donna was a very talented seamstress who adored children and loved cats. Surviving are her children, Mary Louise (Frank) Carroll-Bylo of Plainwell, Patricia (Keith) Dillon of Hopkins, Daniel (Mary) Carroll of Plainwell and Marcia (Robert) Willover of Allegan; 13 grandchildren; 22 greatgrandchildren; her siblings, Beverly “Cobe” (Mary) Coburn of Otsego and Mary (Ray) Gingrich of Oscoda; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Donna’s funeral was held April 2, 2014 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with celebrant Tim Marsh officiating. Burial followed at the Hudson Corners Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Donna may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com
