Requirements for RUBBISH PICK-UP
Please do not put refuse out before 3:00 pm the Sunday prior to April 6, June 8, August 10, and October 12. 1. All residents living on private roads must have the trash placed at the end of the road in a pile. 2. Refuse must be limited to what two men can lift. 3. Barrels with both ends cannot be picked up; land fills will not accept them. 4. All barrels, including barrels with trash in them, will be taken. Any barrel or container too heavy for two men to pick up will not be taken. 5. Trash piles should be located within easy reach from the road, not 20 to 30 feet, for the convenience of the trash haulers. 6. All objects must be bagged or put in containers that will be picked up. No loose materials will be picked up. 7. Containers must be left at curbside and they will not be returned. 8. Old appliances will be picked up if they can be lifted by two men. No refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners unless refrigerants are removed by a professional and tagged. Remember... Appliances can be recycled. 9. NO YARD WASTE! 10. NO BUILDING MATERIALS WILL BE PICKED UP 11. NO TIRES WILL BE PICKED UP 12. NO GARBAGE or container for food products will be picked up. 13. NO ROCKS, SAND, CONCRETE, RUBBLE OR DEAD ANIMALS will be picked up. 14. No motor oil or containers with liquids such as oil based and latex paint. Cans with dried paint are acceptable if lids are removed. 15. No call backs will be made if refuse is placed after the truck has serviced your house. 16. Complaints will be verified (field checked) by Township personnel and checked against driver’s log. 17. Any item not picked up because of the above reasons must be taken off the curbside and stored out of sight by noon of the day following each pick-up. 18. Downtown Otsego to Receive Communications Planning Services
The Michigan Main Street Center @ MSHDA announced today downtown Otsego will receive communications planning service. Otsego was awarded this service after a competitive application process late last year. The communications planning, scheduled to be completed before 2016, will focus on audience, capacity, and current and potential resources to strengthen the awareness of downtown Otsego and the Otsego Main Street program. The total service is valued at $8,000. The service is provided by the Michigan Main Street Center @ MSHDA (MMS) through their partnership with the National Main Street Center. National experts will be working with MMS staff and the local community to provide custom community development strategies for Otsego Main Street. “This is one of the many great benefits of being a Main Street community,” said Molly Wieber, Main Street Manager for Otsego Main Street. “This communication planning process is going to be instrumental in helping us set our long-term goals and will provide us with the key steps we need to achieve them.” The service is part of a menu of services provided to downtown Otsego since becoming a Select Main Street community in 2013. Other services provided by Michigan Main Street include the retail and residential market study in 2014, and baseline assessment in 2013. The freshman angel was wide-eyed and awestruck as he saw the vastness, majesty and wonder of God’s incredible universe. When they came to the Milky Way, the mature senior angel said to the freshman angel, “Come over here, son, I want to show you something special. Look down there! That tiny planet is called Earth. It looks rather insignificant from here, doesn’t it? But something quite remarkable happened there many centuries ago. You see, the people of Earth had gotten off track a bit. They were missing the whole point of their existence. So God sent his only Son into the world to save the people and teach them how to live a meaningful life.” “Wow! That’s amazing!" said the freshman angel. “They must have given Him a warm welcome.” “No,” said the senior angel sorrowfully. “They killed him!” His death brought much despair and discouragement to those closest to our Lord. They not only lost a dear Friend; they lost hope as well. It appeared the movement He began died with Him. But that was because they had thought of death in earthly terms. Christianity is the only religion that sees death as victory. His crucifixion was the world’s greatest tragedy. His resurrection was the world’s greatest triumph! With Jesus Christ we are on the winning side. Ultimately, Truth wins! Goodness wins! Love wins! Payton is a young female Golden Retriever mix. She is a vivacious, young, attentive listener who would make an excellent companion to just about anyone. Obituaries JoAnn RUSH
AGE 81 – PLAINWELL, MI JoAnn passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015 at the Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born December 15, 1933 in Ferndale, MI, the daughter of Neal and Mary (Landrie) Laur. JoAnn was raised in Cheboygan, MI and later moved to Port Huron where she met and married Francis “Frank” Rush on July 4, 1958. JoAnn had taught in a one room school house and later for the Port Huron Schools as an aide and in the lunchroom. She had also worked for H&R Block preparing taxes. After retirement, JoAnn and Frank moved to Texas until 2010 when they relocated to Plainwell. In her leisure time JoAnn enjoyed shooting pool at the VFW, playing cards at the Elks and senior center, bowling, playing yahtzee, golfing, shuffle board and shopping. Surviving are her husband, Frank; children, Cynthia Porter of Plainwell and Michael (Donna) Rush of Port Huron; 7 grandchildren, Kristi, Rachel (Franklen), Heather, Allen, Leslie (Nichole), Michael (Cassie) and Cinthya (Andrew); several great-grandchildren; special family friend, Rodney, and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 great-grandchildren, Emily Jo and Donald II and her brothers, Jim, Bill and Neal “Bud”. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Rebecca E. “Becky” Staley BOONE AGE 59 – RICHLAND, MI
Rebecca passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born September 22, 1955 in Plainwell, MI the daughter of Clyde and Helen (Shook) Staley. Becky was a 1974 graduate of Otsego High School, attended Pensacola Jr. College and graduated from Phoenix Business College. She worked for 13 years for Dr. Pace in Lillian, AL and then was employed at Allegan General Hospital for 3 years. On July 16, 1991 in Pensacola, FL she married Leonn Boone who survives. Also surviving are her sisters, Sharon Staley Callaway of AL and Cynthia Staley Thompson of Kalamazoo; 3 step-children, Stephen (Karen) Boone of Bellevue, MI, Dennis (Rhonda) Boone of Otsego and Debra (Richard) Shea of Climax; several step-grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; her special friends, Ruth Ann McBride and Jauretta (Paul) Moore; her beloved Boston Terrier Mattie and her cat Marley. Friends may meet with the family Friday, April 3, 2015 starting at 11:00 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the Funeral Service at noon, Pastor Joe Spackman officiating. Althea M. HOOVER AGE 96 – KALAMAZOO, MI
Althea passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015 in Alamo Township. Mrs. Hoover was born July 23, 1918 in Mears, MI to Elias and Ethel (Read) Keen. Althea went to school to become a beautician and worked several years as a stylist. She and her husband built a grocery store in the Vicksburg area which they owned and operated for 10 years. She then was employed for 21 years at Kal-Equip in Otsego and later moved to the Upper Peninsula where they built, owned and operated an antique store for 15 years. Althea enjoyed antiquing and glass collectables. On July 24, 1937 in Battle Creek she married Ralph Hoover who died in 1999. Also preceding her in death were her mother in 1981; her father in 1998; and a greatgreat-grandson, Tanner Reed in 2007. Surviving are her children, Sueann Hoover Morse (Jack Clark) of Richland, Ronald (Darlene) Hoover of Otsego, Ruthann Hoover of Alamo and Roger (Maggie) Hoover of Martin; 15 grandkids; 23 great grandkids and 26 great-great grandkids. Mickie passed away Monday, March 30, 2015 at her home in Alamo Township. She was born April 3, 1953 in Kershaw County, SC, the daughter of Thomas and Shirley Owens. For 22 years she had worked at Perrigo. On September 23, 1978 in Alamo Township she married Dennis Hiemstra. Mickie was a hard worker who was happy to stay busy and took pride in doing her job well. She loved to go shopping, spend time with her friends, work in her flower garden, do crafting projects, be out in the sun and most of all she loved being with her family. Surviving are her husband, Dennis; children, Trey (Tonya) Hiemstra and Chantel (Kevin) Hopp; grandchildren, Kristin, Brittany, Logan, Kaitlynn, Macey, Nick and Jonnie and her siblings, Kathy, Delores, Jeff and Calvin. She was preceded in death by her parents. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with Mickie’s family Saturday, April 4, 2015 starting at 10:00 A.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a Celebration of Mickie’s Life will be held at 11:00 with Celebrant Molly Wieber officiating. A private burial will take place at Alamo Center Cemetery at a later time. Patricia passed away, Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born April 9, 1945 in Plainwell the daughter of Vickie Town. Pat enjoyed fishing, camping, being outside, working in her flower gardens, cleaning her house and playing cards. She loved animals especially her dogs. On January 7, 1970 in Paw Paw she married Marshall “Dick” Davis who passed away March 17, 2015. Surviving are her daughter Stephanie (Nick) Edwards of Otsego, and her grandchildren, Nikole and Johnathan Edwards. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and by her brothers, Bob, Fred and Dick. A Memorial Visitation for both Pat and Marshall “Dick” will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 starting at 10:00 A.M. at the Calvary Community Church in Plainwell. Friends may visit with their family until the time of the Memorial Service at 12:00 P.M. Burial of ashes will take place at Hudson Corners Cemetery at a later date. AGE 53 – OTSEGO, MI Tom passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015 in Allegan. He was born March 12, 1962 in Plainwell, the son of Ernest and Betty (Foote) Lutes. Tom was a 1980 Otsego High School graduate. After high school Tom worked at Menasha for 24 ½ years as a senior bulldozer operator until they closed. He was currently employed at Perrigo for the past 6 years. Tom was a member of the Order of the Arrow and was also an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and being outside. He was excellent at smoking food and was well known for his fish fries and chili cook-offs. Tom loved spending time with his family especially his grandsons, he also loved fishing with his wife and dog. On June 4, 1983 at the Martin United Methodist Church he married Betsy, also surviving are his children, James (Cora) Lutes and Jesse (Joseph) Lechner both stationed with the US Navy in Norfolk, VA; 3 grandchildren, Clayton “CJ” Lutes, Joseph Lechner, Jaxon Lechner and another due soon; his twin sister Tammy Lutes of Holland, along with several nieces and grand-nieces. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. Contributions in memory of Tom may be made to the Otsego Boy Scouts Troop 3098. Elizabeth “Betty” E. MEACHAM
AGE 92 – ALAMO TOWNSHIP, MI Betty passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Alamo Nursing Home. She was born May 6, 1922 in Wayland Township, the twelfth of thirteen children of the late William and Mary Caroline (Holderle) Wahmhoff. On August 30, 1941 she married Richard Meacham who passed away in 1990. She always loved music and played many instruments without ever having a lesson or learning to read music. In her early years, before WWII, she and Richard formed a band and played country music at the Otsego Grange Hall. Betty had worked as an aide at Alamo Nursing Home and had also driven bus for Otsego Public Schools at Alamo Valley School. She loved doing crafts, gardening, camping, raising her five children and later spending time with her eight grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Janice Gerhart, Sherry (Donald) Hurlbut and Richard Meacham; seven of her eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; two daughters, Bonnie Esman and Karen Clingan; a granddaughter, Tammie Moorlag and her husband, Joe; daughter-in-law, Sharon; sons-in law, Harvey and Bob and by all twelve of her siblings. Funeral Celebration of Betty’s life was held Thursday, April 2nd, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Burial followed at Green Bower Cemetery in Alamo Township.
