How do we feel when our world comes crashing in upon us? How do we react when our hear ts are broken?

On the after noon of our Lord’s resurrection, two men walked on the lonely road to Emmaus They had not yet heard the news of our Lord s resurrection and felt devastated Their Lord had died a tragic death on a cross and they were in a state of shock As they were walking along and talking the living Christ joined with them Yet they were so caught up in their emotions “their eyes were kept from recognizing him” (Luke 24:16)

As Jesus walked with them He engaged them in conversation about what they were feeling He listened to them He called them out for not knowing what the Scr iptures said about Him Yet, as He patiently explained things to them; they listened to Him As they approached the village to which they were headed, He acted as if He were going on His way They were so fascinated by Him; they urged Him to fellowship and eat with them He accepted their invitation It was while He broke bread with them that their eyes were opened to His living presence (Luke 24:31) “Just then He disappeared from their sight and they asked each other ‘Were not our hear ts bur ning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’” (Luke 24:32)

2 Love takes the initiative Jesus knows our situation and engages us in conversat on

When our youngest son, Sam, was about 3 years old, we had to keep a watchful eye on him in a crowd. He was a runner and, truth is, we lost him a couple of times. I recall once being in a large crowd thinking we had lost Sam So I started shouting, “Sam! Sam! Sam! Where are you?” Sam was actually right behind me, like inches from me He tapped on my leg and said, “I’m right here ” I assumed he was out in the distance, but he was right beside me

Sometimes we assume the same about God. We assume he is distant, aloof, absent or callous And then we hear him call out to our soul, “I’m right here ” The Apostle Paul was spot on when he said, “God is not far from any one of us” (Acts 17:27) Life might blind us to God’s presence but that doesn’t mean He is absent

I have two things usually running through my mind: Bible passages and 80’s song lyrics Remember big-haired Richard Marx? He wrote ‘Right Here Waiting for You’ in 1989. The chorus is, “Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you ”

If I had to sum up the message of God to us through the Bible, I might use this chorus God did “whatever it takes” to be “right here waiting for you ” He stepped into human flesh, blood and bone, into time and space. He experienced betrayal, abandonment, rejection, disappointment and the most brutally painful death imaginable People spit on Jesus, pulled out his beard, put a crown of skin-piercing thorns on his head, jabbed a pointy spear into his side, and drove 9-inch spikes through his hands and feet God became flesh and endured all of this for you and me Why? To show us and say to us, “whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you ” You are loved,

JESUS WITH US THIS SUNDAY AT 10:40AM. We are a friendly, but not smothering, growing congregation on a mission to love and ser ve our community Our worship ser vices are shor t but impactful We also have a fun-filled and safe program for kids ages
