The road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) is a road none of us want to walk on It is the road of sorrow
This is the stor y of two lonely disciples walking on that road It was Easter after noon As they were discussing recent events, “ Jesus himself came up and walked with them; “but they were kept from recognizing him” (Luke 24:15-16)

When Jesus asked what they were talking about, “ They stood still, their faces downcast” (Luke 24:17) As they walked along, Jesus engaged them in a conversation concer ning Himself He opened the Scr iptures to them and explained things to them The more they talked, the closer they felt to Him
When they had reached their destination, they urged Him to stay with them It was when Jesus broke bread with them that their eyes were opened to His living presence (Luke 24:31) It is one of the greatest stor ies in the Bible There are at least three moving par ts to the stor y as follows
1 THE STORY MOVES FROM SORROW TO JOY
At first they saw hope in the past tense Notice in verse 21 “We had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel ” This is the way of human nature
When we lose a loved one we think of the past more than we do the future This is because we have not exper ienced the rest of the stor y Just as spr ing follows winter, death is always followed by resurrection
2 THE STORY MOVES FROM RESIGNATION TO RECOGNITION
Resignation is the act of giving up Recognition is when we can see Jesus at wor k in our situation
One can only wonder how many times our Lord has appeared to us and we did not recognize His living presence?
3. THE STORY MOVES FROM THOUGHTS TO ACTION
It is noted that the first thing they did when they recognized Him was to tell their fr iends (Luke 24:33-35) Remember it was another seven mile walk back to Jer usalem! How far are we willing to go to share Chr ist with others?
The good news is that Jesus continues to come to us today!
