Selena spent the shelter shutdown in a wonderful foster home, however, she is now back at the shelter patiently waiting for her forever home. Selena's foster family said that she is a GREAT dog, she is loving and well mannered, plus playful! Her foster family included a foster sibling (a boxer) and they got along terrifically. One of her favorite things to do was to play outside with her foster sibling. Selena is 6 years old and weighs approximately 50 pounds. She is a little bit reserved when she meets new people, but she warms up fast. Selena's forever home should include a doggy sibling to keep her company. She could be in a home with cats as well, but a slow introduction to any cats in the home is recommended. Kids around 10 years old and up would be the ideal match for Selena. She is a quieter dog, so if you are looking for a couch buddy that also likes to play with other dogs, she is your gal. “WHAT ARE YOU ARGUING ABOUT?”

When he was in the house, he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the road?’” – Mark 9:33 Arguing can be traced back to our childhood. I recall two brothers who were arguing about whether they were having an argument or a debate! Some people love a good argument. Others try to avoid arguing at all costs.
The Book of Proverbs (Old Testament) is called wisdom literature. It is filled with practical suggestions including how to get along with people. In Proverbs 20:3 we read, “Any fool can start arguments; the honorable thing is to stay out of them.” The Bible talks about a time to keep silent and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:7)
Why are some so argumentative? It may be because they feel themselves as being superior to others. Another reason may be just the opposite – having the feeling of being inferior to others, thus needing to prove ourselves.
One of our most beloved Presidents was Abraham Lincoln. Among other qualities, President Lincoln was known for his humility, kindness, forgiving spirit, simple faith and wisdom. He believed in spending time and energy on things of greater importance. For example, he is quoted as saying, “A man has no time to spend half his life in quarrels.”
This brings to mind an incident in the lives of the disciples. During the final weeks of our Lord’s last days on earth, Jesus had His mind set on what awaited Him in Jerusalem. Jesus kept reminding them of the time to come when “The Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and when He has been killed, after three days He will rise again” (Mark 9:31). Yet they did not understand what He was talking about (Mark 9:32).
Things got worse. As they were traveling about an argument arose among them as to who was the greatest among them (Mark 9:34). When they came to a house, Jesus asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” (Mark 9:33). There follows a most amazing verse … “But they kept quiet” (Mark 9:34)…. In other words, they were ashamed of themselves for arguing about petty things when there were much more important things to think about.
In a world of conflict and division, we can choose a better way to conduct ourselves. We can start by deciding what is most important. We can find common ground and focus on things that unite us rather than divide us. We can show respect for those who may not agree with us. We can choose to “speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:13). We can choose to be better rather than bitter.
In the Kingdom of God there is no such thing as “Us” verses “Them” because we are all on the same side. After addressing division in the church, Apostle Paul said, “And now I will show you a more excellent way” (I Corinthians 12:31) … the way of love.
Prayer: Dear Lord of love, help us to show the world a more excellent way. In Your strong name I pray. Amen.

Howard “Bud” DEGOOD
Patricia Ann Elenbaas, 88, passed away peacefully March 1, 2020 at Vicinia Gardens Memory Care Facility in Otsego. She was born November 14, 1931 in Caro, MI to Roland and Louise (Asall) Kern. She attended Caro Public Schools and went on to study at Central Michigan University, where she met her beloved husband of 67 years, Harold. They met while singing in the church choir. She ventured to Chicago to work at Capitol Airlines. It was quite an adventure for a young, single girl in those days and she was very proud of it. She married Harold Elenbaas in 1952 in Caro, MI, and they moved to East Lansing where Harold finished his college degree. They had little money, no car, but remembered it as some of the best years of their lives. Pat was very active in her church, singing in the choir, serving as chairperson of the administrative board and especially being a member of the United Methodist Women. She worked extensively for the church bazaar, making and designing crafts as well as chairing the event. She had also taken part in many civic and social events over the years and had been a member of the Farwell Women’s Club, Library Association and Philomathean Club. First and foremost, Patricia was a devoted wife and mother, always there for her family. She was an excellent baker and always made sure there was plenty of good food and desserts on the table. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, painting, spider solitaire, jigsaw puzzles and made many different types of artistic crafts. Pat is survived by her devoted husband, Harold; 5 children, Nancy (Patrick) Malarney of Hart, Janet (Ramsey) Vincent of Lathrup Village, Mark (Sharon) Elenbaas of California; Sandy (Brian) James of Texas and Judy (Darryl) Paputa of Novi; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, R. James (JoAnne) Kern, Richard (Martha) Kern and Kenneth Kern as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 6, 2020 at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Pat may be made to United Methodist Women of Otsego. Bud was born on August 3, 1926 in Grand Rapids, MI to Gerritt & Eva DeGood. He grew up on a farm in Ada. Shortly after graduating from Lowell High School, he enlisted in the Navy. He proudly served his country in World War II on LSM 443 in the Pacific. During his younger years he had many adventures, including a cross country trip with friends and his Harley motorcycle. On September 9, 1948 he married the love of his life Esta Jackson. They settled in Otsego, MI where he was a long time business man and owner of DeGood’s Radiator & Glass. He was a devoted member of the Otsego United Methodist Church for over seven decades where he enjoyed singing with the choir. He was a long time member of the Otsego Lions Club. He enjoyed golfing, puzzles, and playing cards. He also loved playing the organ and reading the Bible. He cherished his family and adored visits from or hearing stories about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During his retirement years he enjoyed being a snowbird in Dade City, FL. Bud passed peacefully on February 28, 2020, with his son and daughter by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife Esta DeGood and daughter Pauline Baldwin. Surviving children are Dan (MaryAnn) DeGood, Diane (Tim) McPherson, and son-in-law Scott Baldwin. His grandchildren are Chris (Katherine) DeGood, Jeff (Jen) DeGood, Sarah (Marshall) Selkirk, Mike (Melody) McPherson, Laura (Carson) Reinke, & Kelly (Buck) Heid. He cherished his thirteen great-grandchildren - Willem, Adeline, Gerritt, Vega, Dean, Estalynn, Anna, Adam, Elise, Sadie, Renee, James, & Eddie. He is also survived by his siblings Ardyce Skipper & Dale DeGood. Friends may visit with Bud’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Otsego United Methodist Church until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 P.M., with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Lynn “Chico” passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at the Wings Home in Allegan. He was born October 2, 1947 in Owosso, the son of Linford and Shirley (Fivecoat) Mead. Lynn joined the Peace Corps where he met the love of his life, Barbara Repp. They were married June 20, 1970 in Puno, Peru. Lynn had been a teacher in Peru and also in Bay Village, Ohio where he was also the wrestling coach. After his teaching career he worked as a chemical engineer for Praxair in both their Cleveland and Chicago offices. In his free time Lynn enjoyed hunting, fishing and coaching his children’s sport teams. Surviving are his wife; children, Thad (Catherine) Mead of Illinois and Christina (Chad) Bowles of Vicksburg; grandchildren, Zachary Mead and Jackson and Maguire Bowles; siblings, Mary (Tom Ferand) Skym, Judy (Rick) Magyar and Tim (Janis) Mead along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mark Mead. Friends may visit with Lynn’s family from 5-8 PM, Friday, March 6, 2020 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with a rosary starting at 7:30 PM. Cremation will follow. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Winkel Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating. AGE 70 - PLAINWELL, MI Dudley passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at his home in Plainwell. He was born April 21, 1949 to Arvard ‘Bud’ and Rosalie (Rockwell) Rose. Dudley proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He had worked for Lapham Heating and Cooling before going to work for his brother at Archie Rose Machine Shop for 15 years. Dudley was a skilled woodworker and loved to fish, follow NASCAR, especially Jeff Gordon and collect hats, coats and state quarters, having collected 15 complete sets. Dudley was kind hearted and went out of his way to help anyone in need and had a saying or Dudley-ism for everything. He was an Eagle Scout and a life member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030. On December 30, 1987 he married Janet Hampton who survives. Also surviving are his children, Tom (Jan) Rose, Patrick Fredericks, Rebecca (Ron) Perkins, Darcy (Jayson) Ennis, Dawn Rose and Devon Rose; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Jack (Nancy Schnidler) Rose, Lynette (David) Cree and Donna (Kirk) Wisnaski along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Jacqueline Fredericks. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration will be held at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the Otsego VFW Post #3030. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later time. Noreen Ruth (Johnson) GILBERT AGE 74 - FARMINGTON, IA
Noreen passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson, Iowa. She was born on July 21, 1945, the daughter of Julius W. and Viola L. (Folk) Johnson in Plainwell, Michigan. Noreen was a member of the Otsego high school class of 1963. On August 31, 1968, Noreen married Richard Gilbert in Otsego, Michigan. Noreen is survived by her husband: Richard; three daughters: Cynthia N. Murphree of Farmington, Iowa, Kelly Jo Aicher (Shawn McClelland) of Ainsworth, Iowa and Melissa K. (Lamoyne) Westerbeck of Bonaparte, Iowa; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two grandsons. Noreen attended the First Baptist Church in Farmington. She was a member of the Pioneer Historical Society and served on the Farmington Arts Council and the Farmington Library Board. Noreen enjoyed baking, going on shopping trips with the girls, eating at Pizza Ranch and Chong Garden, reading the Bible, Christmas, cooking family dinners and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Above all, Noreen loved spending time with her family. Funeral Services took place January 17, 2020, at the First Baptist Church in Farmington, with Pastor Chad Welch officiating.
