OBITUARIES Mary ROUSE

AGE 65 – OTSEGO, MI Mary passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at her home in Otsego. She was born May 25, 1950 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Harold and Ruth (Lamphere) Austin. Mary had worked at many area factories and had operated a daycare out of her home. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego where she had been head of the prayer chain and had been part of the True Blue Sunday school. Mary had volunteered to run the Otsego Christian Academy’s lunch program, had been a teacher’s aide and helped plan and organize the annual Thanksgiving Dinner. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, quilting, going on shopping trips to Shipshewana and attending quilting shows. On December 6, 1974 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego she married Rex Rouse who survives. Also surviving are their children, Richard (Jessica) Rouse of FL and Tiffany Rouse of Otsego; granddaughter, Sylvia Rouse; siblings, Arlene (Kerri) Keith, Dolores “Dolly” (David) Nicholson, Betty (Dan) Dennany, Roger (Jamie) Austin, Gary (Sharon) Austin and Brian (Kathy) Austin; mother-in-law, Marie Rouse; sister-in-law, Tammy Austin and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Cliff and Dennis, father-in-law, Richard B. Rouse and sisterin-law, Gail Goff. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego. Pastor Paul Laborde officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego.

Erin passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at her home in Indiana. She was born April 18, 1977 in Allegan the daughter of Henry and Sally (Warner) Hanson. Surviving are her husband, Bill Black; son, Monte Hanson; her parents; brother, Chuck (Tabatha Dunklee) Hanson of Vicksburg; sister, Jennifer (Michael) Robertson of Schoolcraft; nieces and nephews, Kalob, Sarah, Kollin and Katy Grace; great-niece, Emery and best friend and bro, Bill Hughes. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jack and Beulah Warner and grandmother, Audeen Ferguson. Friends may visit with Erin’s family from 4-6 PM, Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Cremation will follow. Garold W. DEAN AGE 94 – GOBLES, MI

Garold passed away Monday, March 21, 2016 at the Wings Home in Allegan. He was born October 9, 1921 in Kalamazoo, the son of Lee and Ireta (Shaw) Dean.

Garold was a 1940 Kalamazoo Central High School graduate who served his country in the US Army during WWII. For 20 years he had worked at Parker Hannifin retiring in 1984 and had served on the Otsego Fire Department for 15 years.

In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and following the Detroit Tigers and Lions. Garold was a people person and loved spending time with his family and friends. On April 26, 1946 in Kalamazoo he married Verland Gregersen who passed away in 2003. Surviving are his daughter, Linda Holmes of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, Shelley (Curtis) Henschel of Kalamazoo, Melissa (Sergio) Hernandez of FL, Garrett Dean of Otsego and Rebecca (Jason) Quarry of Mattawan; several great and great-great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Dolores Gregersen, Dolores Dean and Joan Dean.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Gary Dean in 1973 and siblings, Gordon, Jean and Leo. Funeral services will be held at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Friday, March 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Lee Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

Gary passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at his home. Mr. Kisinger, referred to by many as “Big Gar” or “Sir,” was born in Plainwell, Michigan on May 16, 1943, the son of the late Glenn and Bertha (Hoskins) Kisinger. He was a Plainwell High School 1961 graduate. After high school, Gary worked several years at Eaton Manufacturing prior to owning and operating the Plainwell Ambulance service. Gary spent the last 25 years of his working life as an over-the-road freight truck driver. For the past 10 years he enjoyed living on Swan Lake surrounded by nature. He loved watching sports, most of all College Basketball and Nascar. He loved animals, country living, and he especially loved his family and his cat, Sabrina. He enjoyed his trips to Swan Lake Store and going for rides around his old stomping grounds. Gary was an easy going and positive person. When diagnosed with Alzheimer’s he said, “well, this will be an interesting adventure.” Gary is survived by his children: Glenda Kae Fletcher, Theresa Kisinger-DeLavern and Mark DeLavern, Mary Kisinger, and Brian Kisinger. His grandchildren: Trevor, Zachary, and Alicia. His brother, Larry Kisinger; his sister, Allene Guidebeck; and sister-in-law, Patricia Kisinger; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Phillip and Dean and his sister, MaryLou Cook. A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at Cheshire Hills Golf Course on Saturday, March 26th from 1-4 pm. Mildred Mitchell was born in Elkhart, Indiana on October 20, 1925, the eldest child of Leland and Rose (Huttenstine) Arkwright. Her family moved several times throughout her childhood until settling in Atlanta, Michigan, where she met her future husband and was graduated as salutatorian of her high school class. In 1946, she married Dick, and by 1950 they had moved their young family to Plainwell, and became early members of Plainwell Assembly of God Church--their second family, and their church home for the remainder of their lives. Millie taught Sunday School at the Plainwell Assembly of God Church for over 60 years, she was a member of the Missions Board, she had visited and ministered at nursing homes with Dick for many years, and most recently she held weekly bible study at the William Crispe Community Home, where she lived during the final months of her life. In addition to raising her family of six children, Millie held many jobs during her long life; she worked as a file clerk at Chrysler during wartime, in a factory making parts for tanks, in a grocery store, a laundry, in housekeeping, at Kate's Quiltery in Plainwell, and eventually retired from Parker-Hannifin Brass Division in 1990. Millie was a strong woman, and was very kind. Anyone who needed help knew they could ask Millie and she would do anything she could to help. She enjoyed quilting, walking, gardening, watching the birds (especially bluebirds) traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She was an excellent cook, her family especially treasured her homemade bread. She and Dick realized a life-long dream when they built their own home on Miller Rd. Millie's family was always very important to her. She loved watching each one blossom and mature, and seeing her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren was a great joy to her. Millie's desire was that the circle of her family would not be broken, and that all would meet up with the loved ones gone before and be together again. Millie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Delmer (Dick), her siblings Lawrence, Bud, and Pauline, her daughters Laurie Holloway, Rebecca, and Janice Wright, her son Dan, her son-in law Robert Wright, and her grandchildren Ty and Erica. She is survived by her siblings Mabel Bashford and Helen Berry, her sons David (Karla) of Plainwell, and Tim (Jennifer) of Otsego, 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Millie had many close friends, but very special friends were Linda TerMeer, Linda Mollitor, and Ted and Evelyn Campbell.

She was very grateful for the kind assistance of her neighbors, especially John B., Eddie, John N. and Raymon. She was close to a special niece, LouAnn, who had helped care for her, and to her granddaughter who lived with her for several years, Jeannette Bayyapuneedi. Millie was blessed to have the friendships of and loving care from everyone at Wm. Crispe Community Home. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Assembly of God Church, Plainwell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Wings of Hope Hospice in Allegan, who helped to care for Millie during her final weeks of life.

Yvonne passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born June 12, 1935 in Plainwell the daughter of Clyde and Irene (Day) LaDuke. Yvonne was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego and was part of the True Blue Sunday School Class. She enjoyed collecting salt and pepper shakers and crocheting and had won several ribbons at the county fair for entries she had made. On June 26, 1954 in Otsego she married Kenneth Nutter who survives.

Also surviving are her children, Ken Nutter of Kalamazoo, Steve (Trisha) Nutter of Hopkins and Scott (Deb) Nutter of Allegan; 8 grandchildren, Ashleigh, Caitlin (Josh), Zachary, Lexi, Lindsey, Kaileigh (Chris), Danny (Jamie) and Aaron (Daggris); 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia Rockafellow and brother, Cleon LaDuke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Michelle Nutter and 7 siblings. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Otsego with Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. Amy passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center.

She was born August 9, 1968 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Bennard and Ellen (Ort) Pickett. Amy was an Otsego High School graduate and enjoyed reading, travel and playing with her dogs. She was a very kind and caring woman and loved her family more than anything. On December 9, 1989 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego she married Donald Murdock who survives. Also surviving are her children, Matthew (Amber) Murdock and Nathaniel Murdock all of Otsego; mother, Ellen; sister, Deborah Pickett of WA; father-in-law, Bob Murdock of Otsego; several nieces, nephews and extended family members and her dogs, Winston and Maddie. She was preceded in death by her father, Bennard and mother-in-law, Ann Murdock.

Friends may meet with Amy’s family starting at 1:00 PM until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 PM Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with friend Tom Oldham officiating. My son is like a River flowing across this land.

If you go to the beginning of the Missouri River you would find a small stream. One so small you could just step over the River.

When my son started his walk with God, he was just a small stream. With the help of Pastor Chapman he became a mighty River.

God put his love in my son’s heart and the River began to flow.

Everyone here will help to keep this river flowing. Each time you think of my son and his love for the Lord, this River will flow faster and faster.

If you go down a river you will find a place where the flow is slow. You can just walk along and enjoy the river.

Then the River is flowing fast and stirring up the bottom, making the River look a little murky. Just stay with the River and you will come to the place where that murky water will become so crystal clear. The River will become so clear that you can see all the colored rocks on the bottom, looking like precious stone and jewels.

My son’s love for the Lord became just that clear. One day far into the years to come, someone will be thinking back over his or her past years. Then they will say to themselves, “When I was young, a young man named Charlie Keith came and told me about the love of Jesus, and I am so glad.”

At that time, that River will flow so fast and strong it will flow right into heaven and be with our Lord. One day Jesus will be walking by and say what a clear and cool stream, and put His hand in just to refresh Himself. Jesus will say... all because He loved me.

That is my son. His love for the Lord became a mighty River indeed.

While the four gospel accounts tell the story differently, they are in agreement on one important fact: Jesus rose from the dead as He promised (Matthew 16:21). Mark focuses on the experience of three women (l6:1-8). Luke centers on His post-resurrection appearances including two men on the Road to Emmaus (24:13-35) and to His disciples (24:36-45).

Matthew describes His resurrection as “an earth shaking experience” (28:2). John presents the story as a proven “see for yourself” fact (20:5-8, 29). The Book of Acts and letters of Paul and Peter also attest to the reality of His resurrection.

• HISTORICALLY. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a historic fact.

Max Lucado calls His resurrection “The fire that lit the boiler of the New Testament church.” Beyond the Biblical record, are other early sources such as the writings of Josephus, the famous first century Jewish historian and scholar. History proves the obvious – Jesus destroyed death and has given every believer ultimate victory over sin and death (I Cor. 15:56, 57).

• EXPERIENTIALLY. The cross and resurrection are inseparable. The resurrection is the vindication of everything Jesus said and did. It is our only hope for eternal life.

The resurrection of Jesus is the pattern of our own resurrection bodies in the time to come (I Corinthians 15:21, 22).

Jesus died for us so that we might live for Him. In his book, “The Revolution of Hope” Erich Fromm wrote, “Every act of love, of awareness, of compassion is resurrection. Every act of sloth, or greed, or selfishness is death. Every moment of existence confronts us with the alternatives of resurrection or death; every moment we give an answer.”

Thus, the surest sign of His living presence is that people see Jesus living in us.

Prayer: Dear Lord, fill us with Your living presence today and all of our days. Amen.

Dear Otsego City Voter,

On Tuesday, May 3rd, you will be asked to vote on a 2 mill Public Safety millage proposal. This was placed on the ballot reluctantly but unanimously by the city commission. The problems facing our General Fund Budget have been building for more than a decade, and we believe we cannot wait any longer.

We will spend the month of April explaining why we believe we need this additional financial support for our police and fire departments. We will reach out to you in any way we can, and be as available individually and collectively as we can. We have scheduled thirteen separate times when we will be available to you, including two formal information meetings at the Otsego Fire Station that will include a Power Point presentation led by City Manager Beard. Additionally we will publish contact information for each commissioner so that you may contact one of us individually if you prefer. That schedule and that contact information will be provided in the Shoppers Guide and will be available at City Hall.

We are proud of the high level of services our employees provide so that we can raise our families in a safe, well maintained environment. What we as a community decide on May 3rd will affect the quality of life and the level of services provided to our residents. We do know that what we currently provide is not sustainable going forward without additional financial support.

Ray and Bernie owned and operated Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego from 1956 to 1983. They have four children; Carol and Don Wuebbling of Cincinnati, OH, Judy and Tim Conroy of Old Greenwich, CT, Jim and Jo Ann Winkel of Plainwell, MI and Tom and Carol Winkel of Grand Rapids, MI. They also have 9 grandchildren and their spouses, and 15 great grandchildren whom they adore.

Now residing at The Fountains, the Winkels continue to be active members at Peace Ev. Lutheran Church in Otsego. They enjoy participating in fitness classes, playing cards, reading, socializing with their friends and family, and making trips Up North.
