Seventeen years—where did the time go? Time can't, and will not, remove sorrow from your heart. Even today I find myself looking for your car in the drive, and listening for the sound of you coming in the door. People will say, "Don't worry, time will help you get over your sorrow." No, it will not. Sorrow is like happiness—money can't buy or make you happy, and time can't remove sorrow from your heart. Only the Blood and love of Jesus Christ can take a sad and broken heart, and make it fresh, clean, and happy. There will never be happiness over you being gone. Yet I know by your confession of the Lord Jesus Christ that you are alive and well today. What a wonderful blessing it is to know that you were born again, washed in the blood of the Lamb, and spirit-filled. This blessing is the only thing that can remove the sorrow of your loss—knowing by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross of cavalry that one day your mother and I will see you again. I can't imagine what it must be like knowing that your loved one is not in the glory of heaven, because you came to that place and said, “I don't like where I am.” You held out your hands and called to Jesus saying, “Forgive me for all that I have done and help me to live for you.” Then your life began to change. You had to do this all on your own. Your Mother and I could not do it for you. Then you became that new person in Christ. Without Christ, we would never see you again and there would only be sorrow. The only person that will keep someone out of heaven is that person themselves. I have heard people say, "Well, I don't know if I will go to Heaven or to Hell, but wherever I go I will know someone there." Well, sir or madam, young adult or teenager, if this is you by your own confession, you are on a fast track as far away from the GATES of heaven as you can get. When you get to where this road will take you, there will be no gathering of old friends and talking about the good old days. The Bible says that you will be cast in a world of outer darkness, and there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Life is not a one-way street. You can stop, turn around, and go in a new direction. You can't do this on your own, only by the Blood of Jesus. Without Jesus there is no hope in life, only death. The Bible says in John 3:13-21 that God so loved the world. The world that God loves is not a place—it is you and I, and everyone standing around each of us all over the world. We are the world that God so loved that He gave his only begotten Son for each and every one of us. There is no other way to Heaven but by the blood of Jesus. There is nothing that says you or I will see the sun go down today or rise tomorrow. There is something that says when you reach that point in your life, and you call out to Jesus saying, "Lord help me and save me. Lord forgive me for the sin that I have done. I need you," He will be there. What tells us that is the word of God. It is in your Bible. It has never changed, and never will. You will find a great friend in the word of God and his name is Jesus. Don't let someone spend their life in sorrow over you because of your pride.

Just turn around.

Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday was His last bold attempt to show the world Who He was… God’s Anointed One (Messiah), Son of God and Savior of the world. This was in fulfillment to Zechariah’s prophecy: “…See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey…”

FAITHFULNESS + FRUITFULNESS = FULFILLMENT

Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”

Fulfillment can be hard to find. I have spent many years of my life seeking fulfillment in places I’ll never find it. When I was a boy, I sought fulfillment in affirmation from parents, teachers, and coaches. As soon as I was affirmed, however, I only wanted more. When I was a teenager, I confess to seeking fulfillment in alcohol-induced partying. It didn’t take too long for me to realize that hangovers, vomiting, apologizing, and near-death experiences are not at all fulfilling! As a young man, I looked for fulfillment in relationships. I expected friends and girlfriends back then, and even my wife and kids today, to bring deep and lasting fulfillment. Meaningful relationships do come close, but they can’t ultimately fulfill me. In midlife, I expect new adventures to satisfy the deepest longings of my soul. Yet, I’ve discovered that as soon as I’m finished bungy jumping in New Zealand or floating down the Big Blackfoot River in Montana fly-fishing for trout, or staring up at the Sistine Chapel in Rome, I’m already thinking about my next adventure.

I have concluded I am clueless when it comes to the fulfilled life. The good news is that the God who made and loves us, knows how to satisfy the deepest longings we humans have. Jesus offers a recipe for fulfillment. He says that the way to the fulfilled life is through death. If a “kernel of wheat…dies, it produces many seeds.” Jesus is not talking about physical death but something else. By his teaching and life, Jesus highlights that when we die to self-centeredness we can live for the glory of God and the good of people. Everything Jesus said and did was aimed at the glory of God (faithfulness) and the good of people (fruitfulness). Faithfulness + Fruitfulness = Fulfillment.

While culture is not all bad, most of its messages convey that we are the center of the universe around which everything and everyone, including God, revolves. Burger King’s slogan sums up the predominate cultural message with, “have it your way.” I’m going to tell you what you likely already know, every time we humans “have it [our] way” we are discontented and miserable. But when we live for the purpose of loving God and loving people, life becomes worth living. Jesus shows us what the fulfilled life looks like. Follow Him.

It was a festive occasion loaded with political overtones which would lead to His death on a cross for our sins. Historian Dr. Paul L. Maier calls it “A Royal Reception… the end of all privacy and safety, and the beginning of what would be an inevitable collision course with the priestly and political authorities in the land” (The Genuine Jesus, p.166).

While there are many themes which come to mind such as humility, kingship, authority, deliverance and triumph; I would like to focus on the fact of our Lord’s sheer courage. It was an extremely bold move for Jesus to move into enemy territory knowing it would lead to His physical and emotional persecution, vicarious suffering and execution.

In other words, Jesus stayed the course. Nothing could stop Him from fulfilling God’s purpose for His life. On another occasion, Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

Ralph S. Harlow captured this thought in an old hymn entitled “O Young and Fearless Prophet” (1931) which reads, in part:

“…We marvel at the purpose that held thee to thy course, While ever on the hilltop before thee loomed the cross; Thy steadfast face set forward where love and duty shone, While we betray so quickly and leave thee there alone.”

Palm Sunday Take-away: Are we facing a difficult trial? An insurmountable challenge? An impossible situation? The message here is to stay the course. The same God who led Jesus through death on a cross and victory over the grave, will see us through.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we will “shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth and burst into jubilant song…” (Psalm 98:4) because our God lives! In Your strong name. Amen.
