Joan passed away peacefully at Alamo Nursing Home in Alamo Township, early Tuesday morning, March 12, 2024

She was born on March 19, 1937, to Chester and Jane Hale of Otsego, Michigan

Joan graduated from Otsego High School and Western Michigan University with a masters degree She worked as an elementary school teacher for several years before deciding to stay at home with her three small children After several years, Joan’s love of photography and writing guided her into a new line of work She began to write and take photographs for the Kalamazoo Gazette, Holland Sentinel, Herald Palladium, as well as the local Allegan and Otsego papers Her talent in photography can be seen at the Smithsonian, a picture of the old Second Street Bridge in Allegan before the bridge underwent significant renovation in the early 1980’s Joan loved the Otsego area and the history surrounding it In her free time, she enjoyed photography, reading, writing and sitting outdoors Surviving are her children, Cory (Aimee) Hess of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, Sydne (Akinori) Suzuki of Tokyo, and Scott (Sherry) Hess of Gobles, Michigan; grandchildren, Ashley (Andy) Drenth of Kalamazoo, Kaitlyn (Jordan) Rempel of Clermont, Florida, Tyler (Daisy) Hess of Indianapolis, Bailey Hess of Marinette, Sara Christina Suzuki of Tokyo, Shayna (Lee Johnson) Hess of Portage, Sawyer Hess serving in the military, Sage Hess of Otsego; 9 great grandchildren and one niece and nephew She was preceded in death by her parents, Chet and Jane Hale, her sister Nancy Otto, two nieces and a nephew According to her wishes cremation has taken place A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at a later date Contributions in memory of Joan may be made to the Otsego Historical Society

Nancy passed away, Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Lakeland Hospital, with her loving husband by her side She was born in Salamanca, New York, on August 10, 1945, the daughter of Norman and Katherine (Goff) Roszel On September 4, 1971, in Niagara, New York, she married Daniel Pittner Together they lived in Grand Rapids and moved to Big Rapids living in married housing so Dan could finish his schooling After graduation they moved back to Grand Rapids where they remained for several years They moved around southwest Michigan and finally settled in Berrien Springs in 2008 Nancy worked as a nanny and a short order cook She was a fantastic cook and loved taking care of her family Nancy was a woman of strong faith who had a spirit of forgiveness She was a true Christian and loved the Lord with all her heart Nancy’s giving heart, love of children and desire to do charity work led her and Dan to start a ministry Together they traveled to orphanages in Israel where they provided humanitarian aid and medical supplies Nancy had made 7 trips before medical issues stopped her travel Nancy prayed often with her husband and was the prayer chaplain for Women’s Aglow of Benton Harbor Surviving are her husband, Dan and her son, Norman Daniel (Lisa) Pittner of South Bend She was preceded in death by her parents A private graveside service was held Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating Contributions in memory of Nancy may be made to Hagee Ministries of San Antonio, Texas Messages of condolence may be posted at www WinkelFuneralHome com

Judy passed away peacefully at Wings of Hope Hospice in Allegan, Michigan on March 5th, 2024 and into the arms of her heavenly father whom she served faithfully On Nov 3rd, 1933 she was bor n to James Henry Latetimer and Catherine Agnes Dufresne in Bennington, Vermont Eventually her family moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts where she met and married William (Bill) H Harrison on April 12th, 1952 Their union bore 4 children: Brenda (Marty Dyer) Loviska; Deborra (Bruce) Russell; William Jr (Debra) Harrison; David Sr Harrison with 41 grandchildren including Greats & Great Greats Also surviving are two sisters-inlaw Beverly Mroczek and Sandy Hiemstra and one brother-in-law Lee (Debbie) Harrison Preceding her in death are her parents, husband Bill, sisters Jacqueline Harmon and Marion Nangle, 2 grandsons William 3rd Harrison, Michael Harrison and a great granddaughter Brianna Risner, sonin- law Jerry Loviska, daughter-in-law Arlene Harrison, brother-in-law Max Harrison, Gerald Harrison and Dale Hiemstra Judy met Bill at Jos Coffeeshop in Charlestown, Mass where she worked about 1950 Bill was in the Navy at the time They got engaged, married and started a family Going forward in 1963 they moved to Plainwell, Michigan She was a Supervisor for the parts department for Sears Roebuck in Kalamazoo Later she would help keep records of their finances with the Voortman Cookie Business her and Bill bought into She later kept records for the Otsego Public Library retiring when she was about 72 years old Judy & Bill lived a simple life enjoying 61 yrs together until Bill passed in 2013 They traveled to 48 of the 50 States, hunted wild game, mushrooms, fished and snowmobiled They laughed, played and prayed together Judy had an artistic talent: drawing, painting and writing poems She was creative in knitting sweaters and making matching mittens and afghans for her children Judy had a great love for books her entire life When she was on the CB radio her handle was "Bookworm" & she was known to sometimes read 10 books a week! Ever y generation has been faced with the question above Let’s take a closer look It is clear from the Holy Scr iptures that people either loved Jesus or despised Him As His enemies plot against Him thickened toward the end of His life on ear th, the central question was “What shall we do with Jesus?”

His enemies were deter mined to silence Him Enter ing Jer usalem, on what we now call Palm Sunday, was a bold move The intent of Jesus was to appear at a time when the greatest number of people would see Him He knew they would either be for Him or against Him

The act of betrayal by Judas Iscar iot star ted a c h a i n o f eve n t s w h i c h i n c l u d e d o u r L o r d ’s appearance before Caiaphas, the high pr iest, Peter’s denial, Jesus’ appearance before the Sanhedr in (Jewish Supreme Cour t) and His eventual death sentence under Pilate

The irony is that nothing could destroy Him He defied death by r ising from it One of the greatest statements of faith ever spoken came from a sur pr ising source A centur ion who kept guard over Him! His words reverberate down through the ages as he proclaimed, “Tr uly this man was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54)

REFLECTION: Pastor confession alert! I just don’t get God God is odd I’ve been a Christian since I was 18 I have been serving as a pastor or professor to pastors since I was 23 I have advanced degrees in bible and theology But I’m still so clueless at times when it comes to God There’s a lot I know, but I still have a ton I’ve yet to discover about the way, will, and work of God Sometimes God doesn’t do what I want him to do, how and when I want him to do it He won’t fit in the limited space I often give him When he doesn’t, the oddness of God causes me to question the goodness of God To be blunt, when I question if God is good when life is bad, I am vulnerable to despair, depression, resentment, fear, worry, and anxiety

But on my best days, when I m thinking straight, I remember to look to the cross of Christ When I look to the cross, I see how the goodness of God endured the badness of life If you have ever wondered if you are loved, if you matter, if you are valuable and desirable, look to the cross If we focus on the how bad life is, we might miss seeing how good God is And let’s humbly admit, sometimes we really don’t know the good news from the bad news For example, I might pray for God to end a struggle that my teenage son is experiencing I pray and fast, watch and wait Nothing! I think that the only way for God to be good is to do what I want him to do, when and how I want him to do it But maybe, just maybe, God is trying to do something even better, like teaching my son a deeper faith than he has ever known to lead him into a deeper peace than ever!

Do I believe God is good when life is bad? Your answer to that question will determine everything about you It will shape you into a certain sort of person in the next 10, 20, or 30 years Look to the God of love who hung on a cross of shame for you He endured the bad to give you something good Believing that God is good will help you live joyous, free, and happy Plus, people might like being around you more PRAYER: God, I believe you are good even when life is bad Thank you for the cross of Christ, the reminder of my infinite value in your loving eyes Amen
