SILENT OBSERVER of ALLEGAN COUNTY In July, 1972, Kathy Sue Wilcox le her home aer an argument and she has not been seen since. Her disappearance over 42 years ago is still an unsolved and open case with the Otsego P.D. She was 15 at the time, entering into her sophomore year at Otsego High School.

A Boy Scout In Our Community named Sam Jacobs has begun work on his Eagle Scout project. Sam's project, Collect and Build for Christian Neighbors is a two part project. The collecting portion of the project involves challenging local churches to collect food donations for our local Food Pantry and Helping Agency, Christian Neighbors. The challenge and collection begins Sunday, March 1 and will continue through the 5 Sundays in March. I am asking your assistance of the entire community to help Sam complete his project by collecting food donations throughout the month of March. The second part of Sam's project will be the construction of an outdoor food donation collection box with his Scout Troop at Christian Neighbors. The cross is the supreme revelation of God’s love for all people. When Jesus talked about being “lifted up” He was referring to the cross upon which He would die for our sins. He was talking about the power of love. “For God so loved the world, He gave His only Son …” (John 3:16). The love of God is unlike any love one can experience. God’s love is unconditional, self-giving, sacrificial and redemptive. The healing power of God’s love is well documented. His love has the power to heal us physically, emotionally and spiritually. Question: Why did so many people love Jesus? Answer: He loved them. We are naturally attracted to people who love us. During His ministry on earth, Jesus had the ability to love people nobody else liked. Examples: • A despised tax collector (Mark 2:14) • A traitor (John 6:70) • A demon possessed man (Luke 8:39) • A known assassin (I Timothy 1:12-14) • A harlot (Luke 7:48) • A hemorrhaging woman (Luke 8:48) • Social outcasts (Luke l7:19) • A thief on a cross (Luke 23:43)
Then He went on to demonstrate His love by dying on the cross for the sins of all people. How can we not be attracted to a love like that? Prayer: Jesus, keep me near the cross. I accept your saving love for me. Amen.

AGE 95 – PLAINWELL, MI (formerly of Otsego and Florida) Kathryn passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. She was born December 26, 1919 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Charles and Katherine (Lawrence) Dumas. Kate graduated from Otsego High School in 1937. For many years she had worked at Coburn Drug Store. On September 6, 1946 in Otsego she married Ray Hughes and spent 49 wonderful years together until his passing in 1995. They had made their home in Otsego and then lived in Florida for many years before returning to Otsego. They enjoyed living at Baraga Manor for 19 years upon their return. Kate spent her last 4 years at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell where she was very well cared for. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, playing cards and watching birds and deer. Kate loved her family very much. She leaves them with wonderful memories and will be greatly missed by all of them. Surviving are her daughters, Donna (John) Howe of Plainwell and Patricia Barnes of Virginia; 3 grandchildren, John Jr. (Debi) Howe of Plainwell, Gary (Donna) Howe of Otsego and Deborah Williams of Florida; 4 great-grandchildren, Lacey, Kellie, Alyson and Aaron; 2 great-greatgranddaughters and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; son, Charles; brother, Lawrence Dumas, and by her sisters, Lovella Goodwin and Melvena Metcalf. Cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Kate’s family starting at 1:00 P.M. Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the Memorial Service at 2:00 P.M. with Pastors Leigh Larson and Deborah Howe-Williams officiating. Obituaries Richard SONNER AGE 77 – OTSEGO, MI
Richard passed away March 6, 2015. He was born October 5, 1937, the son of Lewis and Ruth Sonner. Surviving are his wife Dinah Sonner of Otsego, a daughter Shelly Holcomd of Byron Center; grandchildren Alex and Jamie both of Byron Center and his stepchildren; a sister Kris (Dick) Oestrike of Byron Center; brother Jim (Jean) Sonner of Wayland; and brother Earl (Gert) Bernard of California. Services will be held March 14th, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ravine Road Baptist Church. 4445 Ravine Road, Kalamazoo, MI.

AGE 81 – KALAMAZOO, MI Duane passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Bronson Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born December 19, 1933 in Gaylord, MI the son of Elsie Sniffin and Charles Seward. After graduating from high school he joined the US Navy and served his country from 1956 to 1962. He studied education at Western Michigan University and was a teacher for 30 years in Michigan and Arizona. Duane loved traveling and enjoyed taking the back roads. He was a devoted family man who liked camping with his family and spent many hours hiking in the mountains of Arizona and New Mexico with his best friend Ed. Duane loved his grandchildren and attended many of their activities over the years. On December 16, 1966 in he married Gisela Nitschke, his beloved wife of 48 years, who survives. Also surviving is his daughter, Sabina (Richard) Boston of Paw Paw; grandchildren, Raymond (Toni) Miller, Heidi Moat and Teddy (Monica) Moat all of Arizona, Andy (Amanda) Seidel of Schoolcraft and Juan Seidel of Kalamazoo, along with 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Petra in 2008 and by his sisters Earla Nichols and Barbara Dudley. Cremation has taken place. Joseph G. CORNISH AGE 14 – ALLEGAN, MI
In a moment of weakness Joseph took his own life Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at his home in Allegan. He was born August 5, 2000 in Oberlin, Ohio, the son of Timothy and Rebekah (Putnam) Cornish. Joseph loved church activities, mowing the yard, hunting, gardening, riding his bike and spending time with his friends. He was currently memorizing the book of James. Joseph knew Christ was his Savior and he is now safe with him in Heaven. Surviving are his parents; 6 siblings, Jacob, Jonathan, Danae, Joshua, David and Matthew; grandparents, Jerry and Alice Cornish of Ohio, Virginia Putnam of Otsego and Stan and Donna Putnam of Florida; aunts and uncles, Paul (Julie) Cornish of Ohio, Jacob (Jamaica) Cornish of Ohio, Ruth Nick of Henderson, Rhoda Mitalle and Jasmin Putnam both of Oregon and by his 8 cousins. Friends may meet with Joseph’s family starting at 9:00 A.M. Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Orangeville Baptist Church 6921 Marsh Rd, Plainwell
until the time of the Funeral Service at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Dan Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Miner Cemetery, Watson Township. Roger BRAINARD AGE 65 – OTSEGO, MI
Roger passed away Sunday, March 8, 2015 at his home. Roger was born November 5, 1949 in Allegan to Carl & Rose (Long) Brainard. He retired from Parker Hannifin in 2009 after 26 years; following his retirement he worked for Pro-Automotive. Roger enjoyed hunting, fishing, his 57 Chevy and car shows. He was a member of the VFW Post 3030 and the Otsego Moose Lodge 345. On March 22, 1969 he married Gloria Chase who survives; also surviving are his daughter Kim (John) Wheeler of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, Jodi, Danielle, Adamm and Kayla; his sister Sandra (Mike) Johnston of Vicksburg. Preceding him in death were his parents; his step-father Wilbur Carrier and his son Kevin Brainard. Funeral services were held, Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Greg Carlson officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Roger may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or West Michigan Cancer Center. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com
Robert Jay SPOELSTRA AGE 84 – OTSEGO, MI
Robert passed away on March 7th, 2015. Bob worked as the Meat Manager at Kroger for 32 years, then Meat Manager at Big Top Market in Plainwell, as well as meat merchandiser at the Plainwell and Grand Rapids stores. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Plainwell. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 84, in Otsego. Surviving are his wife Lorraine Spoelstra (Vander Meer), children Lori (John) Crouch, Sandra (Craig Chartier) Spoelstra, Robert (April) Spoelstra, Sharyn Tennyson, Jill Creveling, and Nancy (Larry) Burnette; and several grandchildren and great grand children. A Celebration of Life was held on Tuesday, March 10th, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church of Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Robert may be made to First Presbyterian Church at 303 East Bridge Street, Plainwell, MI.
Ovonah (Hamilton) NICHOLS AGE 91 – WAYLAND, MI (formerly of Otsego and Coloma)
Ovonah passed away Sunday, March 8, 2015 in Wayland with her loving family by her side. Ovonah was born June 27, 1923 in Allegan to George and Eva (Case) Hamilton. Ovonah graduated from Otsego High School in 1941. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting, painting, reading, recipe collecting and she loved traveling with her husband throughout the USA. Ovonah was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego where she loved singing in the choir and served as President of the Women’s Guild. She also enjoyed singing in the community chorus and music filled her home and her heart. Ovonah loved being Mom, Grandma and GreatGrandma and had taken three of her grandchildren to Cedar Point for an overnight adventure. On June 26, 1942, in Plainwell, she married her sweetheart, Dwight ‘Nick’ Nichols who died in 1997. Also preceding her in death were her parents; and her sister, Myrtle Hill in 2009. Surviving are her son and his wife, Greg and Nancy Nichols of Vicksburg; a daughter and her husband, Diane and Tom Yore of Byron Center; five grandchildren, Jeff (Leslie) Nichols, Natalie (Luis) Diaz, Kelli (Jayson) Bonnema, Ben (Marion) Yore and Rachel (Charlie) Harris; great-grandchildren, JP and Jori Bonnema, Isaac, Vivian, Emerson and Adalynn Yore, Owen, Audrey and Evelyn Harris and Delaina Diaz; a nephew, Terry Hill; and a niece, Debbie (Don) Layton. Friends may visit with Ovonah’s family beginning at 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 13, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Rev. Will Clegg officiating. Burial of ashes will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Ovonah may be made to the Great Lakes Caring Hospice.
