AGE 77 - OTSEGO, MI Creg W. Babbitt, Otsego, MI, age 77, passed away on January 23, 2024.

He was born to James and Evelyn (Roberts) Babbitt on February 9, 1946 in Plainwell, MI. Creg was the oldest of four children; he attended Otsego schools, after which he immediately enlisted in the US Army where he was an Airborne Ranger. Creg and Diane (Polsley) met in October 1985, starting a journey of combining their families. They married February 8, 2002 in Allegan, MI. Creg’s most notable accomplishment was teaching martial arts, achieving the 8th degree Master and Nerve Specialist. Marital arts was a powerful passion enriching his life, giving him joy and community. Creg left a lasting legacy mentoring students, friends and family which he began in 1974. His knowledge and his martial arts school have been passed to his student Master Michael Cooper who will continue Creg’s legacy. Growing up he loved music and dance; most family gatherings involved these activities. He would share his knowledge, stories and jokes. Those closest to him knew never to discuss politics or religion. During his free time he loved horror movies, teaching self-defense and roller skating. His love of roller skating brought him to Ideal Roller Rink where he became General Manager and Speed Skating Coach with his brother. He spent his final days exactly as he wished, at home with all of his Family, “his babies,” listening to music, family and friends reminiscing while recalling favorite memories and sharing stories that caused laughter and seeing him smile. Creg is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years Diane Babbitt; his loving children: Tony (Penny) Babbitt, Teri (Willie) Fulbright, Karrie (Jerry) Brewer, Dara Mann (Mark), Rick (Kathy) Babbitt, Regenia (Warren) Robb, Joey Areaux (Tim), Telly (Lester) Rasnake; 17 grandchildren along with their spouses; 30 great-grandchildren; and brother David John (DJ) Babbitt. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Jackie Lakie and Dennis Babbitt, also bother-in-law David Lakie. The family would like to express their appreciation to Wings of Hope Hospice for their care and compassion during his passing. A Memorial will be held in remembrance of Creg W. Babbitt on May 4, 2024, at the hall behind St. Ambrose Catholic Church (1628 E. G Ave., Parchment, MI 49004) from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Friends are welcome to come celebrate the life of Creg with his family. Patricia Lou (Bartlett) SCOTT

AGE 89 - ALLEGAN, MI Patricia passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She departed on Monday, January 29, 2024 at the Wings of Hope Hospice Home in Allegan. Patricia was born in Kirksville, MO on August 24, 1934, the daughter of Curtis and Laura Bartlett. She was married to Roy G. (Bud) Scott in 1954, a marriage that lasted 50 years until his passing in 2005. Patricia loved her family very much and loved being at her cabin in the woods reading many books, but her favorite book was the bible and growing closer to her Lord Jesus. Surviving are her children George Scott and Judy Wahr of Wisconsin.

Sara Scott of Plainwell and Amy and Dean Evink of Allegan. Six grandchildren Robert and Shelley Scott, Peggy Lockwood, Jessica Scott, Richard and Elizabeth Cutshaw, Erin and Christopher Heimstra and Cory and Jessica Evink. Eighteen great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Sister Becky Bartlett Yaple of Kalamazoo and several nieces and nephew. Preceding her in death were two sons Michael and Joseph Scott of Georgia and sister Eileen Bartlett Goodall of Kalamazoo. Cremation has taken place, and no memorial service is planned currently. AGE 91 - PLAINWELL, MI Phyllis Baranoski, age 91 of Plainwell, died on January 21, 2024. She was born January 11, 1933, in Glenwood, Michigan, the daughter of Donald and Alice Colleen (Bair) Anderson. Phyllis attended Glenwood Schoolhouse and Dowagiac High School. She was married to Joseph Baranoski and raised five children. Phyllis was a caring and supportive mother and grandmother. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Parish. Phyllis loved Bingo and was active weekly at different Bingo halls. She enjoyed gardening throughout her life and tending to her beautiful flowers. In later years, she liked to spend quiet time reading a good book. Her greatest joy was watching her children grow and later her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family. Her family includes her children: Mike (Deborah) Baranoski, Tom Baranoski, Steve (Eleisha) Baranoski, Teresa Cronkhite, and Mark Baranoski; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Cretsinger; her 12 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren; her 3 sisters, Beverly, Carol, and Maxine; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph, her sisters, Donna and Shirley, her brother Max, her son-in-law Dan Cronkhite, and her grandson Tim Cretsinger. A memorial service will be held on February 3rd at 1:00 PM, at Northbridge Church, 8824 Douglas Avenue, Kalamazoo.

It happened that Jesus and His disciples were with Him in a boat when a furious storm came up.

The wind and the waves were so strong that the boat nearly capsized. Like us, they questioned Jesus saying, “Don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38). Questioning God is a natural human emotion. On the other hand, when we study the Gospels, we find that God indeed cares for us.

Here are three things to remember when experiencing the storms of life: 1. Behind the clouds, the sun is shining.

The National Weather Service recently reported that nine of the twelve months in 2023 had less sunshine than usual. That would mean we had more cloud cover than sunshine. Clouds warm and dry the atmosphere and supply water to the surface through precipitation.

The Psalmist said God “covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth…” (Psalm 147:8). One day Jesus will return to earth and “every eye will see him” (Revelation 1:7). In the meantime, remember, even when we experience cloudy days, emotionally, Jesus is still present.

2. Look for the center of the storm.

When The Army Air Corps first studied hurricanes, they discovered something they were not expecting. They sent a plane out to meet one.

When they got to it, they flew straight into the center where they discovered not wind or rain, but perfect calm.

The good news is that Jesus calms the storm (Mark 4:39). If we will center our thoughts upon Him, we will hear the words, “Peace! Be still” 3. When caught in the storms of life, say something like this:

This sweet girl Cindy was brought to the Allegan Shelter as a lost dog on 8/3/23. Since no one came to reclaim this cutie, she’s been spayed, microchipped, and brought up to date on vaccinations/prevention. The medical team estimates she’s almost 2 years old. Cindy is a friendly, outgoing dog who enjoys staying busy (at least at the shelter). She loves going for walks/runs with volunteers, playing with food dispensing toys, chewing on nylon bones, and playing fetch! The shelter is pretty stressful for an active girl like Cindy, and she’ll finally be able to relax a little when she goes to a home. She would be the perfect +1 for outdoor adventures! Cindy could join a home that includes other dogs and/or older kids. If there is another dog in the home, a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure they’re a good match.

Philippians 4:3 REFLECTION: Paul pleads for the leaders to help these women resolve their issue because their names are written in the Book of Life. The Book of Life is a record written by God before the creation of the world which lists people who will live forever in the kingdom of heaven. The term appears in both the Old and New Testament.

How can you be sure your name is written in the Book of Life? Romans 10:9 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” This new life in Christ is offered to all who dare to submit to God’s love. John 3:6 “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” There are individuals who have been raised in the church but have never found a spiritual life with Jesus. Many have never heard the message of God’s one way love, just a message of laws, excluding the message of God’s grace. If you feel your life is going nowhere and you need help, submit to God’s love. You will find that He has been moving towards you as you move towards Him. PRAYER: God of heaven and earth, thank you for the joy I get from knowing your Son, the one true Messiah.
