“ARE WE STANDING IN GOD’S WAY?”
By_____________________________________ Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor1945@gmail.com “Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you don’t have in mind the things of God, but the things of men’” – Matthew 16:23 How could Peter have gotten it so wrong? In one shining moment he makes his great confession of faith (Matthew 16:16). In another he is rebuked for standing in our Lord’s way (Matthew 16:23).
The answer is Jesus and Peter were definitely not on the same page! Jesus was talking about His coming suffering and death. Peter, on the other hand, effectively repeated the same words of the Devil to Jesus in the wilderness of temptation (Mark 4:1-11). “This is not going to happen to you, Lord” (paraphrase). The Lord’s way is the way of love. Peter was ready for a fight, the enemy being Rome.
Let us consider a more positive take on this passage. A better question: How can we walk in the Lord’s way? Let us learn from Peter, the lead apostle.
1. Whenever we choose the way of God’s love, it can be said we are walking in His way. No one can accuse Peter of not loving his Lord. He had a strange way of showing it at times but his love was ultimately reaffirmed after having failed His Lord miserably (John 21:15-17). Loving God is a growing process. We do not learn it all in one lesson.
2. Whenever we choose the way of God’s plan, it can be said we are walking in His way. Following God’s plan is sometimes like walking in a woods in the dark of night with only the light of a flashlight to show us the way. As we follow His light, more light is given. Like Peter, we may stumble and fall, but the Lord is always ready to pick us up and set us on our feet again.
3. Whenever we choose the way of humble service, it can be said we are walking in His way. A church I once served studied Rick Warren’s classic book, “The Purpose Driven Life.” After reading the first sentence one of our members joked, “This book is not for me.” The first sentence reads, “It’s not about you.” Peter was humbled on more than one occasion and each time the Lord was always present to encourage him.
The good news is that Jesus does not call perfect people to follow Him, only willing ones. He accepts us with all our faults and vulnerabilities. He shapes us into the persons He wants us to be. May this be our prayer during this Holy season of Lent. Amen.

Jacqueline Jean Austin, age 90, of Delton passed away peacefully on February 21, 2020 at her son’s home in Hickory Corners. Jacqueline was born on January 14, 1930 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Blaine and Lucille (Holmes) Barnes. Jacqueline enjoyed gardening, quilting, camping, and going out to eat at her favorite restaurant, Ten Ten. In her younger years, Jaqueline and her husband, Charles, loved square and round dancing, and going garage saling. Jacqueline is survived by her son: Charles (Mary Lou) Austin, four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and sister in law: Carol Wiessner. Jacqueline was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son: Stanley Austin; daughter: Sandra (Fred) Wolf; and brother: Robert Barnes. The family would like to thank Elara Caring Hospice for their care of Jacqueline. Private family services were held at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Gary PELFRESNE AGE 65 - OTSEGO, MI
Gary passed away Monday, February 24, 2020 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born June 24, 1954 in Muskegon, the son of Robert and Catherine (Fischer) Pelfresne. Gary was a graduate of Mona Shores High School. He worked at Richard’s Plumbing and Heating before joining his father and brothers at Hanson Distributing Company for over 30 years until his retirement in 2019. Gary had many collections and was an avid metal detector which he enjoyed with his late friend Glenn. On June 29, 1974 at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego, he married Susan Akright who survives. Also surviving are his children, Justin Pelfresne, Alayna (Derek) Lewis and Caitlyn Pelfresne; grandchildren, Ethan and Genesis, and his siblings, Lois (Gary) Herline, Robert (Karen) Pelfresne, Nancy Pelfresne, James (Sarah) Pelfresne, Linda (John) Stegeman, William (Terri) Pelfresne, Lori (Dan) Baas, and Janet (Brian) Vestergaard. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Adam F. Carter. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Gary’s family starting at 1:00 P.M., Sunday, March 8, 2020 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the Memorial Service at 3:00 P.M. After graduating from Otsego High School, he served his country for 4 years in the United States Air Force before beginning his 32 year career with Checker Motors Corporation. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Lois Allison. Mike is survived by his wife, Patricia Allison and three children, Andrea (Rob) Yoder of Kalamazoo, Grahm (Ashly) Allison of Coopersville, Carrie (Jason) Howard of Kalamazoo and five grandchildren, Hunter, Aidan, Chase, Zoey and Calvin. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Fred Allison and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of life will be held June 20, 2020.
