Daren passed away, Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Kairos Dwelling Hospice Home in Kalamazoo He was born June 30, 1969, in Plainwell, the son of Larry and Nancy (Meert) Mulder Daren graduated from Otsego High School in 1987 and attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College For over 35 years he worked in residential and commercial installation and repair of HVAC systems and had owned and operated Mulder Heating and Cooling in Martin Daren was an avid Notre Dame football fan and loved the outdoors, hunting, trapping, fishing and taking drives in the country He was very sociable, easy to talk to and enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends In 1990 he married Kristie Howe and shared 2 children and over 15 years together Surviving are his children Jack Mulder and Grace Mulder both of Kentwood; his mother, Nancy; siblings, Lori (Nick) Lodge of Connecticut and Dennis (Amy) Mulder of Plainwell; nieces and nephews, Heather Lodge, Lem Lodge and Ben Mulder He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Friends may visit with Daren’s family starting at 10:00 A M , Friday, February 23, 2024, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A M , with Pastor Todd Meert officiating Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell Contributions in memory of Daren may be made to Kairos Dwelling or to a scholarship set up for his daughter, Grace

Robert Ransbottom, age 95, of Martin, died on February 19, 2024 He was born October 19, 1928, in Constantine, Michigan, one of seven children of Lloyd and Gertrude (Sutherland) Ransbottom Robert served in the U S Army during the Korean Conflict For 39 years, he worked in maintenance at RockTen/ Maximar Paper Mill, from 1952-1993 He married Bonnie Closs on April 18, 1952, in Angola, Indiana, and spent nearly 71 years together, until her death Robert enjoyed woodworking and built several beautiful pieces of furniture The family spent a lot of time together They camped in the Upper Peninsula from 1968-2011 Bonnie and Robert did everything together, including motorcycle rides in the countryside He was a hardworking family man He is survived by his daughter, Teri (Robert) Schiedel; his sons: Daniel (Harriett) Ransbottom and Randi Ransbottom; his grandchildren: Matthew (Jennifer) Schiedel, Angela (Jason) Daniels, Nicole (William) Whittemore, Lisa (Adam) Butler, Jenny (fiancé Rex Owens) Cooper, Ben Ransbottom and numerous great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters: Lloyd Ransbottom, Jr , MaryAnne Root, Georgia Shook, Wesley Ransbottom Walter Ransbottom and Bill Ransbottom, and the love of his life, Bonnie Ransbottom According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and interment at Fort Custer National

Judy Ellen Shumaker, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, surrounded by her loving family She was born on January 15, 1943, to Larry and Mary Flegal in Mishawaka, Indiana, and spent her early years in Kalamazoo, Michigan before moving to Plainwell, Michigan in 1953 On August 21, 1964, Judy married the love of her life, Jerry Shumaker, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories For their honeymoon they traveled to Cape Cod Sadly, Judy was preceded in death by Jerry on August 5, 2021, and her father, Larry Flegal, but their spirits live on in the hearts of those who loved them Judy's greatest joys in life were her two sons, Mike and Mark Shumaker, whom she raised with unwavering love and dedication She took immense pride in their accomplishments and cherished every moment spent together as a family Judy is survived by her sons, her mother Mary Flegal, her sisters Jill Flegal, Anne Kirby, and Joni Haggard, as well as a niece and three nephews After graduating from Plainwell High School in 1961, she worked for several years at State Tech as a secretary Judy also worked diligently in the Plainwell High School cafeteria for many years before retiring in 2021 Her dedication to her work and her warm, welcoming presence touched the lives of countless students and colleagues alike In addition to her professional accomplishments, Judy found immense joy in simple pleasures and cherished the moments spent with her loved ones She and Jerry enjoyed leisurely coffee outings with friends Her graduating class would meet monthly and Judy loved catching up with everyone She relished brief getaways to the Mackinac Bridge and the shores of Lake Michigan She also enjoyed taking family vacations with some of her favorite places being: Colorado, New York, and North Carolina Judy will be remembered for her kind heart, her infectious laughter, her compassion for others, and her unwavering devotion to her family Her legacy of love will continue to inspire all who knew her Judy will always be remembered for her love of dogs She was very active in her community and always participated in the school board and city council meetings Though Judy may no longer be with us in person, her spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her Memorials made in Judy’s memory may be directed to an animal rescue organization of your choice Envelopes are available at the funeral home In accordance with the family’s wishes cremation has taken place and a public service will be held at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, 120 South Woodhams Street, Plainwell, MI 49080 on Friday, February 23, 2024, with a time for visiting beginning at 1:00 p m until the time of service at 2:00 p m with Rev Dan Minor officiating

Years ago a jour nalist named Claud M Br istol ( 1 8 9 1 - 1 9 5 1 ) a s ke d t h e q u e s t i o n , “ I s t h e r e something – call it what you will – which few people understand and use to overcome their difficulties and achieve outstanding success?”
After inter viewing highly successful people from all walks of life, he came to the conclusion the common thread that ran through all of them could be summar ized in one word belief
Belief is the common thread of the Bible The word believe appears more than 250 times in the New Testament and near ly 100 times in John’s account of the Gospel In fact, the author’s pur pose in wr iting his account of the Gospel is clear ly stated in John 20:31
We have heard people say, “It doesn’t matter what you believe but how you live your life is what matters ” This is not tr ue because what we believe deter mines how we live our lives
When it comes to belief, here are seven simple truths:
1 IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BELIEVE
In James 2:19 we read “Even the demons believe and tremble
2 BELIEF IS MORE THAN INTELLECTUAL ASSENT
It is one thing to say “I believe ” It is another to stake our lives on what we believe “For God so loved the wor ld He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not per ish but have eter nal life” (John 3:16)
3 BELIEVING IN JESUS GIVES US THE RIGHT TO BE CALLED CHILDREN OF GOD (John 1:12)
4 OUR BELIEFS WILL BE TESTED When the circumstances of life overwhelm us, our belief in Jesus can make us stronger
5 BELIEF IS “BEING SURE OF WHAT WE HOPE FOR AND CERTAIN OF WHAT WE DO NOT SEE” (Hebrews 11:1)
6 OUR BELIEF DOES NOT NEED TO BE PERFECT
In the stor y of a boy with an afflicted spir it, his father cr ied out, “I believe, help my unbelief ” (Mark 9:24) The boy was healed not because of perfect belief but because he placed the faith he had in our perfect Chr ist
7 WHAT WE TRULY BELIEVE IS SEEN IN THE WAY WE LIVE OUR LIVES In James 1:22 we read, “Do not merely listen to the word do what it says ” In other words “faith without wor ks is dead” (James 2:26)
LENTEN CHALLENGE: The season of Lent is a good time to ask ourselves what and why we believe
Prayer: Dear Lord, during this holy season, let us become stronger in what we believe In Your strong name Amen

Psalm 106:1-2 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand fir m in the Lord in this way, my beloved I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord Philippians 4:1-2
REFLECTION: This is the last letter Paul is going to wr ite to the Philippian church, so he tells them the joy and the love he shares with them is because of the Lord He urges them to have Chr ist fixed fir mly in their minds and hear ts as they make decisions He has a sincere affection for them because they are his crowning wor k among many churches He is delighted that they are persever ing in their faith in God All ministers of the word and sacrament have joy for the group of people they ser ve His hope is that the Lord will continue to reward those who he has crowned with glor y Therefore, continue to hold fast to Chr ist, which is essential for a church to remain healthy and faithful Philippians 2:16 “It is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Chr ist that I did not r un in vain or labor in vain ” Paul’s church, like ever y church from time to time, will have quarrels and disunity These women are loved by God, so Paul had faith they would wor k it our through their faith in Chr ist To overcome division, we must first have a mind and hear t of Chr ist That means the Holy Spir it makes us submit to the Word of God, not to the word of man
PRAYER: I praise you Lord Jesus and give thanks for your steadfast love which endures forever I pray to have my mind and hear t continue to change In Jesus’ Name, Amen
