We tend to think of ourselves as having little in the way of talents, money, time or influence. The opposite, of course, is the feeling of being sufficient unto ourselves. If we were self-sufficient, we would have no need for God.
On the other hand, God takes our little and makes it much. In the story of the talents, the one- talent person is not condemned for the little he had but was judged harshly for failing to use what he had (Matthew 25:2830). That story is followed by our Lord’s command to serve others as if we were serving Him. Nothing big is expected. The warm meal … a glass of water … welcoming the stranger … giving an article of clothing to a person in need … visiting the prisoner … are all small things (Matthew 25:34-36).
We may think of ourselves as persons of little faith. That really is no excuse. If we use the little faith we have, we might be surprised at what God can accomplish through us.
The kingdom of God is built on doing little things well. What are some little things we can do to serve God? It may be nothing more than a smile, a note of encouragement, a “way to go” or a prayer. It does not have to be very much.
At the end of the day our greatest reward will be to hear our Lord saying to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:21).
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to be faithful in doing the little things in life. Amen.

Carol “Pud” (Read) HANDY AGE 85 - RICHLAND, MI
Carol passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 5, 2019, due to heart complications. Carol was born December 19, 1933. She grew up and lived in Richland, MI on her family's farm. Carol loved gardening, animals, sewing baking and was a member of Delton Sweet Adelines for over thirty years. She was a wonderful caregiver to many including her five children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Handy, her ex-husband Richard K. Arnold, daughter Kathryn Arnold, son Richard Read Arnold, her brother Davil Read and her sister Barbara Girloffs. Surviving children are Christine (Brad) Keeler, Wendy (Scott) Bauer, Becky (Dale) Harmon, Nanette Green, Rick (Janeen) Handy. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, 8047 Church St., Richland with visitation one hour prior and a luncheon following. Carol will be laid to rest at Fort Custer Cemetery at a later date.

Jean’s family includes her children: Kim Counterman, Julie Dudley and Scott (Suzanne) Mayrand; her grandchildren: William (Mara) Wieleba, Jessica (Anthony) Chiarelli and Sarah Counterman; four great grandchildren; siblings: Charlie (Mary Ann) Massey, Renee (Tom) Moss, Terri (Joe) Shaler and Jeff (Vickie) Massey as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 44 years, Jerry “Sarge” Mayrand. A memorial service was held on February 19, 2019. Memorial donations can be made to Wings Home of Allegan. Rachel died unexpectedly on February 4, 2019. She was the daughter of John Robert Snippe Sr. and Becky Nelson. She was born on August 25, 1987. Rachel had a short life, but was a wonderful person, and brought so much joy to many people's lives. Rachel graduated from Allegan High School in 2005. On February 17, 2005 Rachel married the love of her life, Danny VonBerg. They enjoyed the outdoors, kayaking and fishing together. She is survived by her husband Danny, her mother Becky Nelson, her father John Robert Snippe, sisters Jessica Owen, Krista VonBerg, and Emily VonBerg, brothers Ken Snippe and Eric VonBerg and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dolores “Tike” Marietta (Carruthers) Pulver of Otsego passed away at home on Saturday, February 16, 2019. She was born November 29, 1932 in Plainwell to John “Babe” and Winona (Hawkins) Carruthers. She graduated from Otsego High School in June 1950 and the American Beauty Academy in July 1963. She worked at Fashion Flair Beauty Salon for many years before opening Dee’s Chop Shop until she retired in November 2018. She was united in marriage to Robert E. “Brute” Pulver on December 15, 1950. They had five children. She was very active in her neighborhood and community. She organized and held an annual Halloween party complete with trick or treating for 33 years at her home. She was the president of the Pine Creek Social Club. Dolores loved to bake and enjoyed giving her homemade banana bread with chocolate chips to many recipients over the years, often delivered while still warm from the oven. She was involved in music all her life. She directed a junior choir at the Otsego United Methodist Church for years, sang in the chancel choirs at the Otsego Church of God and at the Congregational Church downtown Kalamazoo. She was also active in the adult choir and played the organ and piano along with the dulcimer. She was a born again Christian and a believer and was not afraid to share her faith and belief with anyone. She would never hesitate to stop and have prayer with anyone, anywhere. Dolores had heard a story about the dates of one’s life. The date you are born and the date you die. She was more focused on the part of the story that asks you—what did you do with your dash in between those dates? Those are the ones that count. She was also about hugging those closest to you, and let them know how much they mean to you. So, how is your dash? Surviving are her children, Penny Kay (Lark) Baker of Otsego, Craig (Pam) Pulver of Kalamazoo, Michele Pulver of Otsego and Dixon (Karena) Pulver of Kalamazoo; daughter-in-law, Barbara Pulver of Kalamazoo; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren with another due soon; greatgreat-grandchild; brother, Richard (Mary) Carruthers; sister, Lana (Joseph) Langone along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death byher husband, Robert on July 18, 2000; son, Mark Pulver; grandchildren, Mia Spalvieri Baker and Seth Browning and her sister, Marcia Walters in 2019. Maynard L. “Shorty” KNIGHT AGE 95 - OTSEGO, MI
Maynard “Shorty” Knight was welcomed into heaven by his joyful family members on February 20, 2019. Born July 23, 1923 in Comstock, MI, Maynard was one of twelve children born to Roy and Irene (Pease) Knight. As a young boy growing up on their Martin homestead, Maynard enjoyed the outdoors. Although he regretted not completing high school, he was needed on the farm when his father passed away. Maynard became a milk deliverer for Holland Dairy as a teenager, utilizing a horse and wagon before upgrading to a truck! He always amazed his clients with his strength as he used all 5 foot 1 inch of his slight frame to hoist the huge milk cans onto the truck. In 1943, while working for Checker Cab, he was inducted into the US Army. He served in the European Theatre during World War II with the 168th Engineering Combat Division as a sergeant in the Motor Pool, assisting with building roads behind the front lines and maintaining vehicles. After he returned in December 1945, he eagerly awaited the return of the love of his life, Merle E. Landes, from her Navy duty. Shorty married Lefty on September 27, 1946, and they settled in the Otsego area where they remained for 70 years. Most of Maynard’s work career was spent at Miller Lumber as a truck driver/dispatcher until they closed in 1984, but he then joined his niece Sherry as a part time employee, doing engraving work at B & C Trophy. When not working he found time to assist with the needs of some of his kids’ activities. He and his brother, Kerm, built the original Otsego Band Boosters booth at the Allegan County Fair; he graduated from yelling in the bleachers to yelling on the sideline as a softball coach for his daughter, Amy, and her friends; and he worked tirelessly to teach his kids how to garden properly for their 4H projects! Love and support of family was modeled all through his life as he joined with his siblings and their spouses over the years in building projects together, playing cards together, bowling together, golfing together, vacationing together and purchasing property at Sandy Pines together where he and Merle enjoyed 10 years of creating memories for their grandkids. Maynard will be remembered for his kindness, ready smile, twinkling eyes and willingness to help others whenever a need arose. (“Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” Philippians 2:4 NLT) Surviving are 3 children, Andrew & Pam Knight, Marlita & Bill Walker, Maynard & Donna Knight; son-in –law, Andy & Trish Winter; daughter-inlaw, Pam DeBoer; 11 grandkids, Jefton (Jamie Sue) Knight, Adam (Samantha) Knight, Chris (Kara) DeBoer, Curt (Amy) DeBoer, Mikkel (Teg) Walker Tegelaar, Ben (Jenny) Walker, Melody (Keith) Walker Hendren, Amanda (Joe) Winter Tiseo, Allison Winter, Brett Knight and Alise Knight; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Gloria Ritchie and sisters-in-law, Reva Knight and Doris Herrington.
