Since it’s February, I’ve been reminiscing about some of my favorite love songs, especially those from the 80s and 90s At First Congregational Church in Otsego, we are reflecting on some of our favorite love songs that King David wrote to God in the biblical book of Psalms This past Sunday we focused on David’s apology love song to God, Psalm 51 David describes how the compassion of God drove his confession to God God didn’t hate David because David loved sin; God hated David’s sin because he loved David And, this is really important too, David didn’t hate himself because he loved sin; David hated his sin because he loved God. Love, or compassion, must initiate our sorrow, or confession.
Amy and I celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary by hiking in Watkins Glen State Park in upstate New York At the pinnacle of the hike, there was a playground and a snack shop (with over-priced beverages-you’re nearly dying of thirst and have no other optionscriminal!!!). I convinced Amy to join me on the see-saw. She did…reluctantly. To make things more exciting, I would hit the ground fast and hard so that Amy popped off the see-saw plank, slightly into the air I did this five times until I got bored That’s when I hit the ground even harder and faster, popping Amy so high into the air that she flew over the handle bar and onto the middle of the see-saw, holding on for dear life. I humiliated her in front of a crowd of strangers There were scrapes and bruises all over her arms and legs Only a clueless newlywed male would do something so stupid
After I laughed (I repeat- clueless newlywed), I felt terrible. The conviction did not lead me to hate myself because I hurt Amy If that were the case, the shame and guilt would have led me away from Amy and toward self-hate, sour-introspection, self-condemnation My sorrow was not driven by self-hate but love for Amy I took care of her really well, for like three whole days. My offense brought good sorrow that led me to love her not hate myself. All of us have done things we regret, things that have grieved God and hurt others If the sorrow you feel produces guilt and shame, it’s bad sorrow because it will lead you further from the one you hurt If the sorrow you feel is from God, it will lead you to love and make amends with the one you offended So to recap bad sorrow=shame and good sorrow=love Moral of the story don’t go on a see-saw with your spouse if you’ve been married one year or less
COME WORSHIP JESUS WITH US THIS SUNDAY AT 10:40AM
