DESIGN The Design Team has been working with Wightman, an engineering firm, to finalize topography and blueprints for the Riverfront Pavilion. The input from the Design Team on different aspects of the structure has been critical in keeping the project on schedule. Expect a groundbreaking ceremony for the site in the Spring! Additionally, the design team will be organizing our Spring Cleanup later in May.

ECONOMIC VITALITY The Econ Team put on Small Business Saturday
at the end of November in partnership with the Otsego/Plainwell Area Chamber of Commerce. Many downtown businesses saw their best shopping day of the year. Additionally, the Econ Team also worked with the Small Business Development Center of Michigan to put on a training workshop for downtown business owners focused on marketing. This spring the Econ Team will be focused on planning a new business resource for 2020-2021.
ORGANIZATION & PROMOTION The Organization and Promotion Team helped to put on the Hometown Christmas event in December and analyze its potential success afterwards. New events for the coming year are being planned, and expect more volunteer opportunities in warmer months. VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION Special
thanks to local student Dillon Avery for his work building us two new picnic tables for downtown Otsego! We will be placing one of the tables at the Art Garden, and another near the Riverfront Pavilion site during the warmer months. If you would like to volunteer with us, for a big or small project, please contact our office to meet the director and learn more!

Smart & Simple Discounts - In the old Harding’s property a new business started at the end of November: Smart and Simple Discounts. They feature a wide variety of products, including an expanding grocery. Be sure to check back weekly for new items at their store location of 114 S. Farmer Street.
HOMETOWN CHRISTMAS
Mac's Place - The former Dougie's Restaurant at 113 N. Farmer Street has been sold and a new restaurant is planned for the site: Mac's Place. At this time nothing is known on the timeline for the new restaurant to open or what type of restaurant it will be. Stay tuned for more details!
This year was one of our most attended Hometown Christmas events! We kept many of the crowd favorites for the event this year including hay rides, breakfast with Santa, the live Nativity, and of course the Christmas Parade. We also had success adding a few new activities this year including a Wine and Canvas at the Museum and toasted Marshmallows at the Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to everyone who volunteered, attended, and special thanks to our sponsors for the event: Edward Jones Ginger Titus, the Community Shoppers Guide, PJ Printing, and Mezzo Coffee House.
Match on Main - Otsego Main Street has applied for a Match on Main grant for a new business that could possibly be opening at 109 S. Farmer Street. The entrepreneurs at the site have plans for an extensive renovation, and are hoping to receive the grant award of $25,000 to make the project a success. We will learn more about the potential grant award along with what the business plans to do at the site in the coming months.

Captain (short hair, orange), Crunch (tiger) and Berries (long hair. orange) are three handsome boys came into the Allegan County Animal Shelter together and are spending the shelter shutdown period in a foster home with each other. Although they don't have to be adopted together, they certainly could be. Captain, Crunch and Berries are all friendly and LOVE to be pet and brushed! They are also snuggle bugs and will curl up next to you when you lay down. The cats are good around the foster's cat and two dogs. They were a bit nervous around the dogs at first, but have adjusted well to them. Their foster mom thinks that a forever home with a calmer dog would be a good match with any or all of the boys. These guys do great using the litter box and are well-behaved in their foster home. If you are interested in adopting any or all of these handsome cats, please fill out an adoption application at WishbonePetRescue.org. Frances E. (Reid) LANDSBERGER
Albert passed away Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Allegan. He was born on January 22, 1931 in Byron Center the son of Sierd and Grace Hoekstra. Albert was married to the love of his life, Florence Belle Herbert on June 4, 1954 in Martin. Albert left school at the age of 14 upon the death of his father. He became the bread winner for his mother and siblings at that time. His working years started in the onion fields near Hooper, then on to Blood Brothers in Allegan for about twenty years. Al started working for Lewis Schaafsma building houses in the Martin area. He truly loved building and was extremely meticulous in his field. One of his greatest joys was building a home for his son and his family. Al and Florence moved to California in 1978 where they enjoyed so many adventures and Al continued building houses. They lived in North Carolina before returning to Michigan. After returning to Michigan they began wintering in Bradenton, Florida. Al enjoyed sports, especially football and baseball. He and Florence were crazy about bluegrass music and attended numerous festivals between Michigan and Florida. They also enjoyed dining out and were always up for a card game. Albert is survived by his son, Albert Jr. (Patsy) Hoekstra; two grandchildren, Jon (Amber) Hoekstra and Vanessa (Justin) Tillison; five great-grandchildren, Madelynn, Owen, Everett and Sawyer Hoekstra and Mason Tillison; sister, Gertrude Hoekstra; his in-laws, Barry (Linda) Herbert, Frank (Kathleen) Herbert, James (Terri) Herbert, Grace Herbert and Marlene Hoekstra and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence on January 23, 2019 and siblings, Jose Talsma, Flora (Dort) Zeinstra and Sierd Hoekstra. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration will be held at a later time. Contributions in memory of Albert may be made to Allegan County Medical Care Community. Fran passed away peacefully at Ely Manor of Allegan, MI on Friday, January 10, 2020. Fran was born February 22, 1930 in Temperance, MI and was the daughter of Walter W. and Rhuby M. (Dull) Reid, both of whom preceded her in death. Fran was a gifted LPN, whose career spanned from Kalamazoo, MI to Miami, FL to Allegan, MI. Her most rewarding time was in labor and delivery, where she cared for newborns. Fran lived a life full of fun and adventure. She was always ready for a spur of the moment road trip, to someplace new and exciting. Her annual birthday celebration trips to Las Vegas were ongoing to her 89th birthday. Fran’s favorite interests were books, watching football, gardening, babysitting and traveling. She was also an accomplished bowler and won the State Championship for singles and doubles with her sister, Connie, in the late 60’s. Fran leaves behind her son, Verne (Penny) Chapman, of Mililani, HI; her daughters, Debra Landsberger of Phoenix, AZ; Nancy Landsberger of Otsego, MI and Karen Tarpley of Otsego, MI, as well as her sister Sharon (Rod) Nunnelee of North Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Erin Chapman, Lindsey Damm, Kyle Damm, Kerri (Chris) Damm-Biliyk, Matt (Peg) Tarpley and A.J. Tarpley; great grandchildren, Kaelyn, Shelby, Korbyn, Christopher and Jonathan and her beloved nephews, Charles (Jon) and Peter (Jen), a niece, Becky (Duane) and former sons-in-law Audie and Emilio. Fran was also preceded in death by her brother, Norman Reid; sisters, Nancy Grivins and Connie Lemon; half siblings, Virginia and Robert; former son-in-law Duane Damm; and former spouse Joseph Landsberger. A private family gathering will be held this spring with interment in Prairie Home Cemetary, Richland, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Fran’s honor may be directed to a charity of one’s choice. Grace Hattie BOULTER AGE 91 - PLAINWELL, MI
Grace Hattie Boulter, age 91, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2019. She was born March 26, 1928 at home in Pine Plains, New York to Elmer and Julia Hobert. Grace loved her family and bringing people joy. She was kind to others and loved to send cards with a $2 bill and notes to the kids that rode her school bus. She worked for 44 years as a school bus driver for Plainwell Community Schools. Her hands were always busy. She was either baking, crocheting, sewing, canning, gardening or doing many other things that she loved. Grace is survived by her sons Andy (Jean) Boulter of Gobles, Jon (Lisa) Boulter of Plainwell, a daughter Lori (Kent) Robinson of Westerville, Ohio, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Julia Hobert, 2 brothers, Carl (Boss) Hobert and Howard (her beloved Buddy) Hobert and 2 sisters, Ida Nelson and Vera VanTassel. She was also preceded in death by her oldest daughter Cindy Boulter Edson in 1990. What a reunion in Heaven there will be for all of them. Cremation will take place at Hills Funeral Home in Westerville, Ohio. There will be a memorial service at Doster Community Reformed Church in Plainwell, Michigan on Saturday, February 8th at 1:00 PM. Pastor Steve Slater will be officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow. Interment will be at a later date at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Bath, Michigan where her parents are buried. Jim passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at his home in Plainwell. Jim was born November 20, 1943 to Walter and Gertrude (Lauer) Boettcher of Otsego. Jim served in the U.S. Navy from 1962-1966 at Virginia Beach, VA. He had a variety of jobs throughout his life and retired from plastering in 2002. He enjoyed golf and keeping busy out-of-doors. Preceding him in death is a son, Bruce Boettcher. Jim is survived by his wife Onalee (Eckert) Boettcher, daughter Debi (Jeff) Steele and Brian Boettcher, Kristen (Jimmy) Wheaton, Patrick Arehart, 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Friends may visit with Jim's family 10am on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will follow at 11am.

Vance Chester Swope passed away January 28, 2020 in Plainwell.Vance was born September 13, 1935, the son of Earl and Thelma (Decker) Swope, in Needmore, PA into a hardworking rural farming family and was a 1953 graduate of Green Hill High School. Many of the family, including Vance, went on to become educators. Vance headed west from Fulton County in the late summer of 1953 to attend Fort Wayne Bible College in Fort Wayne, IN. That fall, he met the love of his life, Marian Joan Haffner of Plainwell, MI and they were married on June 7, 1958 in Fort Wayne. Vance also attended Shippensburg University and received a master’s degree from Western Michigan University before settling in Plainwell in 1962, where he lived ever since.Vance loved kids and was a fixture as a teacher in the Otsego Public Schools for 32 years, retiring in 1995. Vance and Marian have also been active members of the First Baptist Church of Plainwell for nearly 60 years, where Vance helped construct the church’s current sanctuary in the 1960’s and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. Vance was proud of his Pennsylvania farming roots and employed them by planting a large garden each year, canning and sharing the harvest with family and friends. He was also a regular entrant in the Plainwell Memorial Day Parade, driving his Farmall and Ford tractors in the parade before hosting a large annual barbecue at their home.The most beloved thing on this Earth to Vance was his family. He was much loved by his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve (Becky) of Elkhart, IN; Eric (Roshan) of Harrisville, NH; and Mike (Dani) of Portland, OR. Vance absolutely adored his nine grandchildren and their spouses, recently enjoying a reunion of the whole gang for a summer week on Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The grandkids will miss his love and warmth greatly: Tim (Chelsey), Kyle (Brenna), Carson, Katrina, Stephanie (Matt) Ciesielski, Trevor, Maya, Molly, and Natalie. Vance also remained close to his siblings, Richard (JoAnn), Watson, and Nellie (Pieter) Vels. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Marvin and Foster. Over the years, Vance was also a mentor, and father-like figure to many others.Vance went to be with his Lord on January 28, 2020 after spending the previous week surrounded by his loving wife Marian, his three sons and their wives, and many other family members. His faith was solidly in Jesus Christ and we take comfort in knowing he is in the presence of the God he served. His kindness, generosity and warmth will be missed by all who knew him. Paul Gerard MURRAY AGE 62 - PLAINWELL, MI
Paul Gerard Murray went home to be with his Lord on January 20, 2020, at the age of 62. Paul passed away unexpectedly and left this world too soon. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 16, 1957 to Paul & Betty (Locey) Murray. Paul graduated from Plainwell High School class of 1975. He completed his higher education at Central Michigan University and was a proud Chippewa alumnus. At CMU he was a member of Theta Chi Business Fraternity, staying in contact with his fraternity brothers by playing in an annual golf outing. Paul adored his children and their families. He stayed in contact with them frequently and never failed to tell them he loved them. Paul was a strong believer in our Lord Jesus Christ and the Church was a large part of his life. He attended St. Margaret Catholic Church where his passion for music was played out using his baritone voice cantoring for Saturday night mass and in the church choir. Paul was a proud lifelong resident of Plainwell where he worked in the family business at Murco, Inc. His career at Murco started at the age of 12 and working his way up through the company he learned every facet of the meat industry eventually leading the company. He brought innovations to the company which made it one of the largest regional meat processing plants. Paul had a healthy obsession for the game of golf. He never let the facts get in the way of a good golf story but his skill was real. A single digit handicapper he scored three holes in one, all on Hole 12, at Lake Doster Golf Club. He also enjoyed shooting pool, especially if you brought money. He was dedicated to physical fitness. Paul worked out at the gym religiously and as soon as the water was warm enough to not take his breath away, he would swim across his cove almost every day, rain or shine. When not swimming, Lake Doster also brought him joy through his float boat. Paul was the grill master. Preferring to cook at home over eating out, he loved to entertain family and friends with his knowledge of meat and grilling. Surviving are his mother Betty of Kalamazoo, MI and Hilton Head Island, SC, the love of his life, his wife Patti Owens, his children: Paul Murray of Ann Arbor, MI, Leah (Josh) Coleman of Austin, TX, Natalie (Jairo “Jay” Guzman) Murray of Chicago, IL, Abby (David O’Connor) Murray of Australia, Zachary (Savannah) Hathaway of Otsego, MI, Ty (Katie Reid) Hathaway of St. Petersburg, FL, Amy (Dan) Albanese of Washington DC, and Cassidy (Seth) Johnson of Gobles, MI, two grandchildren, Ruby Coleman and Harrison Hathaway, his siblings, Jennifer (Andy) Cole of Tucson, AZ, Jeff Murray of Plainwell, MI, Anna (Larry) Dennany of Plainwell, MI, Amy Murray of Berkeley, CA, Tina Murray of Oakland, CA, Kevin Murray of Kalamazoo, MI and Joe (Leticia) Murray of Buchanan, MI, as well as several nieces and nephews and the mother of his children Katy Peterson of St. George, UT., and a host of loving friends. Paul was preceded in death by his father Paul Murray Sr. Visit with family and friends at a celebration of life gathering on Friday, February 7 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, Marshall & Gren Chapel, Plainwell. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret Catholic Church, 766 S. Farmer St. in Otsego on Saturday, February 8 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation has taken place. I have been blessed to oversee the works of Christian Neighbors for 23 years and still so touched by the generosity of those who support us. Because of your gracious support we were able to provide food to around 250 households each month in 2019. In addition, we helped with crisis funding of $107,635 to keep people housed and to keep utilities on in their homes. Our Education Program is growing by leaps and bounds and impacted over 500 individuals last year. I’m proud that we help our Veterans, Senior Citizens and the homeless.
We are also blessed with amazing volunteers. Our volunteers truly have servant’s hearts and lift the spirits of those who visit us for food or in a time of crisis. They bless me each week with their smiles and kindness. We are committed that our programs run efficiently and provide the best services possible. It is our promise to you, our supporters, to be good stewards with the donations you provide. We are excited about all that God is planning for us in 2020 and beyond.
