Morrison was brought to the Allegan Shelter as a lost dog 12/4/23. Sadly, no owner came to reclaim him so he's searching for a new family. Since he was not reclaimed, he's been neutered, microchipped, and brought up to date on vaccinations and prevention. Morrison is such a good dog! He seems to already be housebroken and is so loving and cuddly with the shelter volunteers. This fella is bored living in the shelter, but enjoys when he gets to go for walks/runs. Training with Morrison should be fun and easy; he's smart and very food-motivated! Talk about a winning combination! Morrison's future family could include other dogs and/or children. If there are other dogs in the home, a meet and greet will be scheduled to ensure they're a good match! A home with kids 8 and older would be this big guy's best fit. Marc Freeman Russell of Plainwell, Michigan, went to his heavenly home on February 13, 2024. He was the son of Freeman and Frances Russell, both deceased. Marc lived his life as a strong man of faith. Loving the Lord and his family were a very big part of his life. He was married to his best friend, Barb (Durian) Russell for close to 52 years. They both enjoyed traveling on their motorcycle, just riding around Gun Lake and stopping for ice cream, or going on a trip of a lifetime Out West for 4,400 miles. They also enjoyed golfing. Anytime they were together was a good time. Their happy place was in St. Joe, Michigan, going on their boat either on the Big Lake or just cruising down the St. Joe River. Meeting up with Chad and Sheri, April, Josie and Seth with their boat, was guaranteed a great time, making memories. Going to Orange Beach, Alabama for the past several years with family and friends was another special time. Marc is survived by his wife, Barb; a son, Chad Russell and his wife Sheri; two special granddaughters, April and Josie; a sister, Laurie Russell and her husband, Marc Elliott. Also surviving are a brotherin-law, Dave Durian and his wife Kathy and several nieces and nephews who Marc loved dearly. He was preceded in death by Robert and Jeanette Durian, his in laws and a special brother-in-law and friend, Ken Durian and his wife Diane. Marc led a busy life. He was involved with AYSO soccer, Big Brothers, Kids Hope and he volunteered at West Michigan Cancer Center. He was an athlete at Portage Central High School and received 8 letters in sports. Marc started his career in construction with DeLoof Construction and retired from Spartan Stores as a Director of Construction and Facilities. Most recently, he was an Elder at North Point Church in Plainwell, serving his Lord and being part of his church made him a happy man. Marc will be remembered as a man of faith, a loving husband, son, dad, grandpa, uncle, and friend. Friends may visit with Marc’s family starting at 12:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at North Point Church, 571 N 10th St., Plainwell, MI, until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 P.M., with a time of fellowship to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Marc may be made to Christian Neighbors or Centrica Care Navigators. Eloise Helen Doster, passed away on February 14, 2024, in Plainwell, at the age of 101. Born on November 12, 1922, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to loving parents Mose and Cora (Metz) Burden, Eloise’s journey through life was marked by unwavering faith, family devotion, and compassionate service. Eloise was the heart and soul of the Doster family, embracing her role as a spouse to her beloved husband, the late George B. Doster, and as a mother to her six children: Rita (John) Wells, George Scott Doster, Millard Doster, Jade Harrington, Kim (Nancy Jo) Doster, and Mark Doster. Her loving presence will forever be a treasured memory for her thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six greatgrandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. Eloise also shared a special bond with her niece, Bonnie (George) Purlee, her extended family of nieces, nephews, and a circle of good friends who will miss her dearly. Her life was enriched by and now is succeeded by these many loving relatives and friends, though she now joins her parents, husband, brother Scott Burden, sister Maxine Johnston, son-in-law Bill Harrington, daughter-in-law Sue Doster, and grandchildren, Dan and Erin Roth, in eternal rest. Eloise's commitment to her community was unwavering as demonstrated by her 65-year tenure as a founding member of the Doster Reformed Church. She was an active member of the Fifteen Friends Club, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and served as a 4-H advisor. With a passion for history and storytelling, Eloise authored three poignant books detailing the life and times of Doster, the Reformed Church, and the family’s farm. Eloise relished the pleasures of socializing, cooking, and tending to her flowers and garden. She found great joy in playing cards with friends and reveled in the simple beauty of living on the family farm. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Private burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial contributions to Centrica Care Navigators Hospice will be appreciated. Dorothy Marie Ramsey of Plainwell, MI, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the age of 97. She was born on October 28, 1926, to loving parents Frank and Pauline (Wachowiak) Faulhaber. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, Sam and her son Jeff. She leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love. She is survived by her children: Carl (Kenley) Ramsey, Joyce Swinehart, John (Teresa Arms) Ramsey and her daughter-in-law Rhonda Ramsey; her sister Betty Patterson; eight grandchildren: Jeffery, Derek, Kristy, Erin, Kimberly, Sarah, Katie and Matthew as well as eighteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed watching The Young and The Restless and the Detroit Lions. She also loved to travel. When at home, she would have a full cookie jar for family and friends, and you could find her working on a word search. A memorial service to honor Dorothy's life is being planned at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made in Dorothy’s memory to a charity of your choice.

Nancy E. COUNTERMAN AGE 87 - JENISON, MI (formerly of Watson Twp.)
Nancy passed away, Thursday, February 15, 2024, in Grand Rapids. She was born December 27, 1936, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Garrison and Lucy (Stolle) Boyce. For over 30 years Nancy was a physical education teacher for Plainwell Community Schools until her retirement in 1994. Her passion for teaching extended outside of the classroom. She spent many summers teaching local children to swim at several area lakes and at her home. Nancy was a woman of strong faith and in her free time enjoyed listening to music. She was a competitive endurance horse rider and a member of the Yankee Springs Trail Riding Club. In 1954 in Indiana, she married Arthur Counterman. Surviving are her husband of 69 years; her children, Steve (Patti) Counterman of Allegan and Karen (Bob) Everett of Jenison; 5 grandchildren, Michael, Stacy, Chad, Katie and Mindy; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, John Boyce and Kathleen Bowen along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Daniel; great-grandson, Kaiden and siblings, Garrison, Jean, David, Phillip, Joann and Marilyn. Friends may visit with Nancy’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Darrel Le Roux officiating. Nancy found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was especially fond of the bond she had with her great-grandson Gage. Nancy loved to travel across the country in their motor home. She enjoyed sewing and made many clothes for her family throughout her life, especially for her sister Wanda. When at home, she enjoyed watching the hummingbirds. Nancy also loved decorating for the holidays and filled her house with decorative snowmen each Christmas. Peggy A. Madison passed away February 9, 2024 at Kauhale Nursing Home in Otsego. Peggy was born on February 11, 1944 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of Gene and Dorothy Benedict. She graduated from Otsego High School in 1962. Peggy married Paul B. Madison on February 21, 1989. She is survived by her husband, Paul Madison, sister Nancy Boettcher, her sister-inlaw Nancy Benedict (widow of Tom Benedict, Peggy’s brother), her son Peter Holland and his family, Karinda Holland (daughter-in-law), Angela Hathaway and her family, Lynda Soule and her family, Effie Secondi and her family, Shawn Hisler and her family, Joshua Madison and his family, and William Madison and his family. Peggy retired from Consumers Energy in 2002, and was a long time member of First Congregational Church of Otsego. There will be a memorial service held at First Congregational Church in Otsego at 11am on April 13, 2024.

Shirley passed away on January 25, 2024 in Winter Haven, FL. She was born March 26, 1945 in Plainwell, MI. Shirley married David (Giz) Giesbrecht on August 20, 1966 and had two children: Michele Del Rey of Spring, TX and William Todd Giesbrecht of Magnolia, TX. Shirley worked at Pipp Community Hospital for 35 years, working her way up from Ward Clerk to Distribution Manager. She enjoyed golf, bowling, bingo and playing games with the grandkids. She loved to watch her grandkids play football. Shirley also loved knitting and crocheting and made afghans for many people. She is survived by her husband, children and grandsons: Jonathan Del Ray, Benjamin Del Rey, Cameron Del Rey and Mason Giesbrecht, all of TX. Shirley is preceded in death by her father, Ben Madden; her mother, Betty and brothers, Larry and John. Arrangements are pending.

Welcome to the holy season of Lent. The word comes from the Latin “lencten,” referring to the lengthening of days in the spring. It begins on Ash Wednesday and goes to Easter on the church calendar. The liturgical color is purple denoting penitence and sorrow for our sins. It lasts 40 days (excluding Sundays, because Sundays were considered “feast days” not “fast days.”) The first recorded reference to Lent as 40 days was at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. It seemed to correlate with Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, when He fasted and was tempted by Satan in preparation for His ministry on earth. What began as a time of preparation and examination of candidates for baptism, in the early church, became a time when all believers are invited to seek to draw closer to Christ, leading up to the celebration of our Lord’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. The watershed moment in Jesus’ ministry on earth occurred at the region of Caesarea Philippi when Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” (Matthew 16:13). From that time forward Jesus began talking about His coming suffering, death and resurrection. Jesus made it personal by asking them, “Who do you say that I am?” It is the overarching theme of the Lenten season. When Jesus healed a paralytic (Luke 5:21), calmed the sea (Mark 4:41), pardoned a prostitute (Luke 7:49), stirred curiosity in Herod, the Roman ruler (Luke 9:9), and rode into Jerusalem on a donkey on Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:10), the question was the same: Who is this? During His last days on earth, the enemies of Jesus saw Him, among other things, as an impostor, blasphemer, heretic, friend of sinners, glutton and drunkard and law-breaker. And He paid the price for it by dying on a cross for our sins. The great John R.W. Stott said, “The great question in Christianity remains: what do you think of Christ?” As believers, we love to join Peter’s famous confession of faith, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). While there have been many attempts, over the centuries, to refute that claim; the fact remains Jesus is who He says He is! Among other things, Jesus is our Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9), our light (John 8:12), our door (John 10:7), our Good Shepherd (John 10:11,14), our resurrection and life (John 11:25), our only way to heaven (John 14:6), our true vine (John 15:1), our joy (John 15:11), our friend (John 15:15), our wisdom (James 1:5), our hope (I Peter 1:3,6) and so much more! Prayer: Dear Lord, may we know who You are and who we are in You. In Your strong name. Amen

Philippians 2:1 REFLECTION: Have you ever taken time to reflect on how your life might be without being loved by God? The good news is that we are taken into a fellowship with Christ by the work of the Holy Spirit. How does this happen? God’s Spirit calls us when we hear or read the Word of God. It draws our hearts and minds upward to respond to heavenly things. This good news gives us eternal security and comfort in our lives. As we encounter Christ in a spiritual way it surpasses human understanding. When we submit to God’s love and authority we unnaturally, (our nature is against God), confess with our hearts that Christ is Lord. He is the only one who makes us one with God. This action restores our relationship with our God, and results in loving our neighbor, (which is unnatural), as we love ourselves. As we engage other people in our daily lives, we begin to see them as people created in God’s image. When we humble ourselves before God, we naturally treat others as God has loved us, which gives us hearts of tenderness and compassion. PRAYER: Lord Jesus have mercy on me. Open my eyes to the needs of those who I live and work with. Give me comfort and courage when I am stressed by my neighbors behavior. Let me feel your peace, so I may be compassionate toward them.
