“TURNING POINT”

“From that point on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things…and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” - Matthew 16:21
The phrase “turning point” may be defined as any event that brings change to our lives. Examples: the birth of a child, the birth of a grandchild, graduation from high school, marriage, divorce, beginning a career, loss of employment, retirement or the death of a loved one. In the ministry of Jesus Christ on earth, He came to a place called Caesarea Philippi (Matthew 16:13ff). It was definitely a turning point in His life. It was a watershed moment for Him. From that point on, He began to talk about suffering, death and resurrection (Matthew 16:21). In Hebrews 12:3 we read, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross …” While there is no joy in human suffering or death, Jesus could see beyond it to the joy of God’s plan of redemption made complete. The primary turning point for believers is the moment we realize He died for us. This leads to repentance and a life of faith and hope. The Holy season of Lent comes each year to remind us of the terrible price Christ paid for our sins.
Yet in the Divine plan of things, suffering and death lead to authentic joy. There is no greater joy than knowing our sins are forgiven and that one day we will live with Him in heaven. “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10). This brings to mind the words of an old chorus. “At the cross, at the cross, Where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled way. It was there by faith I received my sight, And now I am happy all the day.”
As we continue our journey of faith through the Lenten season, may we experience the love of God in new ways. May this be a turning point that will bring much joy to us and to others. Prayer: Dear Lord, I repent of my sins and intend to lead a new life following the example of Christ, in whose name I pray. Amen.

Cleo “Red” BELDEN
Terry passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born December 21, 1949 in Marion, Indiana, the son of Stephen and Lois (Seeger) Terhune. Terry graduated from Marion High School where he was class president. He went on to graduate from Purdue University where he served as president of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Terry had owned and operated The Fireside Restaurant and Lounge in Otsego for 20 years until his retirement in 2013. He loved golfing and spent many hours on the greens at Prairiewood Golf Course. He had been the president of the Prairiewood Neighborhood HOA for many years. Terry was a big sports fan and enjoyed following the Bears, Tigers and Blackhawks. He also enjoyed attending Purdue football games with his brothers, John and Steve. Terry was strongwilled and a fighter, the strongest man his children ever knew. He had a great sense of humor and his one-liners will be greatly missed. Surviving are his children, Trisha Gesmundo and her children, Canyon and Kaia; Stephen Nathaniel Terhune and Gina Terhune along with his siblings, Stephanie Bessett, Steve Terhune, Jane Ann DuLong and John Terhune. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Cleo died on February 2, 2018. Born March 17, 1924 to Rachel (Julien) Belden and Leon Belden, Cleo lived in Otsego or Allegan most of his life. He was a hard working member of the Teamsters Union who later started Belden Sand and Gravel with his wife, Margaret. He loved horses and was a member of the Pleasure Riders Club and the longest-standing member of the Allegan County Mounted Division. He also loved dogs, country music (he had a little crush on Barbara Mandrell and could sing at least two lines of Woody Guthrie’s Oklahoma Hills), his family, and his friends. He may not remember your name, but he remembered everyone you ever dated and that place you used to go skinny-dipping back in 1943. “Red” was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Margaret (Vote) Belden, and his daughter Terrie (Belden) Wood. He is survived by his son, Lawrence Belden, his daughter-in-law, Sue Belden, his son-in-law, Carl Wood, and his five granddaughters, Kathaleen Wood, Audra Belden, Tiffany Belden, Amanda (Wood) Burns, and Sarah (Wood) Alling. Also surviving are his step-grandsons, Brett Harris (wife, Michelle) and Jason Moose, his greatgrandchildren, Camille Pittman, Jeremiah Pittman, Abigail Pittman, Maryjane Alling, and Broderick Thompson, and his stepgreat-grandsons, Dylan and Ross Harris. A memorial luncheon will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on February 18 at the VFW hall in Otsego. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Charlotte was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, February 12, 2018 at Wings of Hope in Allegan, MI. She was born April 15, 1954 in Plainwell, MI, the daughter of Arthur and Paula Henry. Char attended Martin High School. She loved decorating and remodeling houses, gardening and playing dominoes with her siblings on a weekly basis. Char's devotion to family and friends was easy to see. She was the glue that held the family together. She was kind-hearted and very giving. She volunteered at Wings Hospice and Christian Neighbors. Char is survived by her daughters, Cherity (Matt) Cowels and Jill (Jamie) White; grandson, Isaac White; siblings, Larry Fretwell, Paulette Fretwell, Deb Washburn, Joe Henry and her very special aunt Lucille (Phil) Dunlop. According to Char's wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited for a Celebration of Life and luncheon on Saturday, February 24 from 11am-2pm at the Gun Plain Township Hall, 381 8th Street, Plainwell, MI 49080. Dan passed away on February 11, 2018 at his home with his family at his side. Dan was born on January 24, 1949 to George A. & Sally (Saye) Crouch. Dan graduated from Plainwell High School in 1967. During school he was active in sports and captain of the football, baseball and basketball teams. Dan served proudly in the United States Marine Corp. during Vietnam. Dan had a life-long love of golf, fishing, camping and traveling. He was proud of his family and well loved by all who knew him. Dan’s family includes his wife of 33 years, Mary; his two children: Monica Crouch and Charles (Tessa) Crouch; his mother Sally; five grandchildren: Hunter, Benjamin, Charleigh, Emerson and Evelyn; three siblings: Emily (Chris) Stafford, John Crouch, Ken (LeAnn) Crouch as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, George and his brother Pat. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, 766 Farmer Street, Otsego. Terry was a 1974 Otsego High School graduate. He was a big U of M fan and enjoyed skiing, golfing, flower gardening, drag racing and formula racing. Surviving are his daughter, Nicole (Matthew) Romo of Schoolcraft; grandchildren, Dominick and Eleighana; his mother, Barbara (Gene) Keeley of Otsego; siblings, Bill Collick, Barry (Candis) Collick, Don Keeley and Gena (Marvin) Woods along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and step-mother, Barbara Collick. His family loves him dearly and hopes that he has found peace. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Debra passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Rose Arbor Hospice. She was born December 17, 1959 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Guy) Juskiewcz. Debra was a graduate of Hamilton High School. She had worked at Tyson Foods for many years, Tiara Yachts for 7 years and most recently at Freedom Smoke. On August 5, 1989 she married Bruce Kleeves until 2001. In her spare time she enjoyed going to the casino, playing the kitty slots and making blankets for people she loved. Surviving are her children, Tabatha (Chuck Hanson) Dunklee of Otsego and Chantal (Daniel) Morse of Gobles; 9 grandchildren, Sarah, Austin, Dylan, Ally, Dakota, Sam, Joe, Chloe and Russell; 1 great-grandchild, Emery and siblings, Beverly, Denise, Leo, James and Dale. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Richard and siblings, Sharon, Mark, Nancy, Brenda, Carole, Terry and Bucky. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 15, 2018. A homemaker, family was very important to Betty, she also worked processing apples at Dunlop’s and at the Pine Lake Laundromat. Betty is survived by her son Steven (Jeanne) Killick and her son Brian Brown and his children Bailey and Bryant DeBolt; son Mark Killick and Mark's sons and their children Doug Jr. (Kari) Stull, Doug III, Adam, Kylie and Victoria; Robert H. Killick (Erin) and her son Jake, and Mark Jr. (Tonya) Killick and their children Lydia Jane and Mark Alan Killick III. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers: Richard, Leo Robert, Ray, Royce, Harold, Edwin, and Keith; and a great granddaughter Kylie Stull. Edna was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus, Monday, February 12, 2018 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born March 28, 1929 in Vriesland, MI, the daughter of Edward and Jennie (VanderVelde) Kroodsma. Edna enjoyed playing yard games with her family, spending time at the cottage on the Muskegon River and playing scrabble. Family and faith were Edna’s passion. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Zeeland and enjoyed being in the choir. She was kind hearted and loved helping others and often volunteered at the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. Though of modest means she shared all she had with those in need. “And the King shall answer and say unto them, ‘Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me’.” Matthew 25:40. Surviving are her children, Leigh (Nate) Greene of Kalamazoo, Tom (Joan) Bouman of Holland, Karen Ciarmello of Maryland and Mark (Julie) Bouman of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Christopher, Philip, Quinton and Alexandra; 4 great-grandchildren; caregiver and friend, Stan Massey; sister, Esther Raterink and many nieces and nephews.
