February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and as such it is important to be aware how important our dental health is to our overall health. Many parents wonder when to start caring for their child’s teeth. The answer is, before the baby is born. It is important
for the mother to take good care of herself, eating right, getting checkups and following her doctor’s advice. When giving your baby a bath it is a good time to begin taking care of his/her oral health. You can clean your baby’s gums with a wash cloth, and in doing so, you will be getting rid of a white film that contains bacteria and also getting your child used to having their mouth cleaned on a regular basis. As your baby’s teeth erupt you can start brushing them using a soft tooth brush and as they get older, they can begin brushing their own teeth. Have your child brush their teeth as you brush yours - it should be fun. Children learn by example and if they see the adults in their life taking care of themselves, they will follow.

Your child’s first visit to a dentist could be as early as their first birthday. The visit should include an examination of your child’s mouth. You will be shown the best at-home techniques for taking care of your child’s teeth as well as having a discussion about diet and fluoride. The idea of such an early dental visit is surprising to many parents, but studies are showing that cavities are increasing in preschool aged children. Educating parents about the role of diet, hygiene and fluoride is the answer to improving your child’s dental health, and it will save money, which in these difficult economic times should get our attention. Also, the idea that, I don’t have dental insurance, so I can’t afford to go to a
dentist doesn’t really hold up. This kind of thinking has far-reaching negative consequences for children. It’s just not about a few cavities in some baby teeth, which are going to be lost anyway. It’s about establishing good habits for your children, which will serve them throughout their life. This is especially important in light of new research which is establishing a link between dental health and heart disease, diabetes, outcomes of pregnancy and many other diseases whose underlying cause is inflammation. So, if you have a child who has not been to the dentist at all or for some period of time, pick up the phone and make an appointment. It could be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

The Heart of God “For God so loved the world he gave his only Son that whoever believes him shall not perish but have everlasting life”– John 3:16 In the third century AD there lived a devoted young Christian man named Valentine. He had it all … he was bright, talented, handsome, personable and winsome. Young Valentine was all of these and much more. But, most of all, he was supremely devoted in his love for Christ. His future looked bright. He was engaged to be married to a lovely young lady, but their dream of marriage never came true. The Roman Empire declared all Christians illegal citizens and guilty of treason. All they had to do was say, “Caesar is Lord” and go free. But many loyal Christians refused to do that. Valentine was one of them. He was arrested in a government crackdown and thrown into jail. While in prison awaiting his execution, he wrote love letters to his fiancée. They were beautiful, gracious, eloquent letters assuring her of his great love for her … the first Valentines. But on February l4, 269 AD, young Valentine was executed, put to death and martyred for Jesus Christ. History is full of examples of sacrificial love. The supreme example is our Lord Jesus Christ who died to save us all. In all probability, none of us will be asked to die for Christ, but every single day is a day we can live for Him! Prayer: Thank you God, for giving your Son Jesus Christ who died that we may live for Him in this life and with Him in the life to come. In Jesus’ name we pray. Wanted: Old Cell Phones My name is Karen McGuire, the daughter of Jimmy & Kumi McGuire and I'm a 7th grader at Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Recently, I was accepted into a program called People to People. This summer, I will be taking a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales to learn about their cultures and what it takes to become a student ambassador. I need to raise funds for my tuition on this trip. One of the ways is recycling old, used or even broken cell phones. I am working with a company called PhoneRaiser in Texas. I send them the cell phones; they refurbish them and send them to third-world countries or people in the army. I found out through this program that 1 phone can contaminate up to 39,000 gallons of water if disposed of in a normal landfill, and that currently only 4% of the cell phones get recycled.

Gladys went to be with her Lord on Monday, February 6, 2012. Gladys was born December 14, 1919 in Sturgis, the daughter of Lyndon and Clara (Baldy) Wyatt. She attended 5th through 12th grades at Otsego Public Schools, graduating in 1937. Gladys obtained her Bachelor and Master degrees from Western Michigan University. In 1983 she retired from Martin Public Schools after a 42 year teaching career. The Wyatt Center at Martin Public Schools was named in her honor. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego, the True Blue Class, Gideons International and the Allegan County Retired School Personnel. Gladys had been on a mission trip to India, where she visited orphanages. Her hobbies included flower gardening, crocheting and crafts. Surviving are a sister Margaret Hamminga of Kalamazoo; a brother Duard Wyatt of Indianapolis, IN; a sisterin-law, Joyce Wyatt Brunsink of Jennison; 2 brothers-in-law Omar Royer of Frankfort and Carl Gordon of Kalamazoo; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 1 brother, Ruth Gilson, Beverly Gordon, Mary Louis Royer and Donald Wyatt. Funeral services will be held at 11am Friday, Feb 10th at the First Baptist Church of Otsego, Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. Interment will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International or the First Baptist Church of Otsego.
