Daniel Edward Burnham II passed away January 31, 2024. Dan was born on July 18, 1943, in Kalamazoo, and lived most of his life in Plainwell before moving to Arizona in 2013. He was the owner/operator of Dans Body Shop in Plainwell from 1959-2009. Mary L. SEEKMAN AGE 92 - OTSEGO, MI

Mary Lou passed away peacefully Friday, February 2, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was 92. She was born May 27, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Peter and Sophie Milin, and was the eldest of three daughters. After graduating from Bowen High School in Chicago, she spent a summer with a family friend in Martin, where she had a chance meeting with a handsome young man. Harley Seekman was smitten with this fancy Chicago girl, as she was with him as well. Mary Lou Milin married Harley Seekman on January 1, 1951, and they spent 66 years together before he passed away in 2017. They made their home in Otsego, MI where they raised their three daughters. As lifelong residents, they made many true, enduring friendships. Mary Lou was a great mother. She was busy taking her children to church, on walks, bike rides, to plays and concerts, to the movies and to the lake. She was an accomplished seamstress and made many of her children’s clothes. Most importantly, she surrounded her family with unconditional love. When her children were grown, Mary Lou returned to work in the office at Kal-Equip, and then Plainwell Paper where she worked until retirement. Upon being blessed with grandchildren, she traveled regularly to California to care for them whom she dearly loved. If there was a theme to Mary Lou’s life, it was that she was constantly, unselfishly taking care of others. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy (Dorian) Jung of Camas, WA, Judy (DeWayne) DeLaet of Paw Paw, MI and Mary (Robert Jr.) Pedersen of El Segundo, CA; grandchildren, Miranda Ways, Rebecca Pedersen and Robert Pedersen III, a great-grandson, James Henry and also many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sisters Bette Anne Radulovich, and Jeanette Cooper and her son-in-law Robert Pedersen Jr. We loved having you in our lives and may choirs of angels sing you to your rest dear gentle soul. Steve Barber passed away February 3, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family after a brave battle with cancer. Steve was born December 15,1955 to Orrie and Ruth Barber in Allegan, Michigan. He grew up in Allegan and graduated from Allegan High School in 1974. He proudly served in the United States Air Force. After he left the service, he moved back to Allegan and was employed by Perrigo Company, first in the factory and then in their print shop, later known as Multi Packaging Solutions (MPS). While working at MPS, he met the love of his life, Arlene Ninke. They married on March 18, 1988 and settled in Otsego on a property surrounded by woods and a beautiful creek. Their home in the woods became a place where they raised their family, enjoyed the nature all around them, grew a garden, and had many family bonfires. Their home became Steve's favorite place on earth. He loved fishing, tinkering in his shop- he could fix about anything, and birdwatching. After retirement, Steve and Arlene enjoyed bike riding (they even had a tandem bike) and walking the Kal-Haven Trail. Very early, on warm summer mornings they would take their coffee down to the creek and sit on a log and listen to the early morning birds. He is survived by his wife Arlene (Ninke), children Chase Barber (Traci) of Savannah, Georgia and Angie Barber (Jess) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; mother, Ruth Barber of Otsego; sister Deborah Barber of Otsego and Gail Herpst (Joseph) of LaGrange, Indiana; sister-in-law Marcy Hoyt (Ken) and brother in law Ron Ninke (Karen). Many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his father Orrie Barber, father and mother-in-law, Robert and Pauline Ninke and very special cousin, Dale Barber. A funeral was held on Thursday, February 8 at Winkel Funeral Home, with graveside service at Mountain Home Cemetery immediately following. A celebration of life gathering took place at Steve and Arlene's home following the service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Friends of Kal-Haven Trail.

Rick CLEMENS

AGE 72 -KALAMAZOO, MI Rick passed away, Friday, February 2, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family in Cooper Township. He was born July 26, 1951, in Kalamazoo, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Carlson) Clemens. As a young boy he lived in Portage and moved to Plainwell as a freshman, where he graduated in 1970. Rick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army serving as a MP at the Pentagon and in Germany. For many years Rick worked at Michigan Bell until his retirement in 2003. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. Rick loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He attended all of their school and sporting events which brought him great joy. On June 3, 1988, at the First Congregational Church of Otsego he married Karen Nimtz who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Sara Miller; grandchildren, Taya, Christopher, Madelyn and Jade; brother, Gary (Trace) Clemens; sisters, Sue (Mike) Mansfield, Deb (Mike) Miller and Laura Clemens along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Cegee Heldt. Services were held Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the First Congregational Church of Otsego with Pastor Todd Meert officiating. Burial took place at West Cooper Cemetery in Cooper Township. Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post #3030. Contributions in memory of Rick may be made to the First Congregational Church of Otsego, Christian Neighbors or Centrica Care Navigators.

A year and another Valentine's Day after your loss...

As the second year without you has dawned, caught in the tenacious grasp of grief, but acknowledging your absence, I'm not ready to say good bye. I miss you more than anything. We started as ballerina and cavalier in the ballet, and became partners on the larger stage of life, married for more than 35 years. On stage, in performance, between lifts, my first declaration of “I Love You”, became daily expressions years later. I have always cherished you, my precious Tirzah. As I have said in many ways, my love goes with you. Our silent house is much the same as it was when you departed, for it contains the myriad great memories with your life's energy within.

In the past year's excursion into the pain of grief, and its storm-tossed turbulence, I've been looking for you, and expecting to see you again. Your intuitiveness, joie de vivre, mischievous play and creativity in so many of the arts, all continue to inspire me. In our lonely house, I heard your voice just when I wanted to ask Santa for that very present. Our dogs miss you and during several nights howled in unison, sensing your beautiful nearness; I also felt it and believed. I have seen you in my dreams, in angelic form – and wanted to share a hug just once more, when words would not work.

Re-entering ballet classes, without you, there was a poignancy, especially when I remember the graceful way in which you moved, and how we encouraged each other, like when clowning around, on center. The grief hits hard even during an exercise class, and a balletic adagio stretch turns into sobs of remembrance. We lived for the classical arts, particularly the ballet Giselle. I promised that you would never be a 'Willi'. I would risk my life and confront 'Myrta' just for the chance to dance our pas de deux once more.

When playing your favored compositions on the piano, singing an operatic aria, and attending a symphony, I feel your gentle presence, visualize your smiling countenance, and sense your loving touch upon my shoulder. It has taken great difficulty to create music once more, but recalling your playful spirit provides renewal. I remember your beautiful eyes, brilliant smile, and sometimes biting sense of humor. I see you when visiting our favorite places, and feel your laughing presence, if not your inspired cynicism and dramatic conversation on a world full of topics. You are alive in me. Your vibrancy continues to light up my life. As always has been, and ever shall be, ever yours, ever mine. My immortal beloved, my soulmate, my dearest friend, my lover, my spirit.

When we hear this news, it troubles our minds, and we get anxious in our hearts. When we are tempted by distress, Paul calls us to “rejoice in the Lord” no matter the situations in the world. That may sound crazy at first but let’s look at what Paul is teaching us. The Lord refreshes us by giving us spiritual comfort in many ways. Even amid anxiety and chaos, we can have a joy-filled heart. We can be strengthened by rejoicing in the Lord, for no matter the outcome, we have God’s eternal promise. When we have a Christcentered “peace and joy” our distress is eased. The Christian remedy for a tranquil and peaceful mind is accepting God’s fatherly care for our names are written in the Book of Life. PRAYER: Lord Jesus, continue to help me to have a tranquil heart and mind. I rejoice, and am glad your glory shines on me and helps me find peace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. Need a Bible? We have all done this. We will be talking to someone on our phones and the person we are talking to cannot understand what we are saying. So we speak a little louder and then ask, “Can you hear me now?” Likewise, in prayer, we sometimes wonder if God hears our prayers. So we ask, “Can you hear me now?” We need to remember that God answers all prayers. Prayers must be offered sincerely, humbly, with the right motives and in the spirit of child-like trust.

Prayer is conversing with God. True communication requires both talking and listening. It is one thing to wonder if God hears us. It is another thing to consider whether we are listening to God. Consider the example of Samuel (I Samuel 3:7-11). Samuel was the answer to his mother’s prayer. Hannah promised the Lord that if God gave her a son, she would give him in service to God. The name Samuel means “God hears.” As a boy, Samuel was taken by his mother to Eli, the priest, and dedicated to the service of God. The Bible states “In those days the word of the Lord was rare …” (I Samuel 3:1). In this Scripture passage, the Lord spoke to Samuel three times, but Samuel thought the Lord was speaking to Eli. It was as if the Lord were saying to Samuel, “Can you hear me now?” When Samuel realized the Lord was speaking to him, he simply responded, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (I Samuel 3:10). The take-away is that God speaks to us, but we are not always listening. Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear” (Mark 4:9). Thus, the question is whether or not we are listening to God. Here are just a few examples of God speaking to us: WHEN FEELING LONELY “…And surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20).

WHEN FEELING REJECTED “… Whoever comes to me I will not drive away” (John 6:37).

WHEN FEELING DEFEATED “You are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). WHEN EXPERIENCING SELF-DOUBT “I can do all things in him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! what a sweet, silly, good girl she is!

Nellie was brought into Wishbone's care on 10/18/22. Fortunately she has been with a loving foster for nearly half of her time since arriving at the animal shelter. This wallflower was so shut down and scared at the shelter, so being in a foster home has given her the opportunity to bloom and show what a sweet, silly, good girl she is! She can still be a little bit shy when meeting new people, but quickly warms up to anyone who gives her treats. You'll know you've been accepted into her circle when she rolls over for belly rubs (which is why at the shelter she is called Nellie Bellie) Nellie could join a home that includes cats and/or respectful kids. She has shown no interest in cats during multiple assessments at the shelter, but we always recommend a slow introduction between new dogs and cats. A home with respectful kids 10 years and up would be her best fit, but could do younger with the right kids. Although she would be happiest as an only dog, Nellie could potentially join a home with another calm dog that gives her space. Generally she seems to be uncomfortable around other dogs.
