Every day is an opportunity for a new start. It has been said, “As the morning goes, so goes the day.” Getting a good start is important.
In Mark 1:35 we read, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Some of the great saints of the church did just that. John Wesley, the father of Methodism, made it a practice to rise at four or five o’clock in the morning for private prayer. Prayer, at whatever hour we begin our day, is important.
I recall a 98 year old woman in a church I once served who made it a practice to begin each day by looking in the mirror and saying to herself, “This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Some may call this starting the day off on the right foot. Believers see this as beginning the day with faith and hope.
God gave us night so we can rest and restore our energy. God gave us day to use that energy to glorify God. The Psalmist prayed, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14 NIV).
A few moments each morning, even five minutes with God, can make the entire day a positive experience. We may not know what the day may bring but God does and God will see us through. The past is gone. Tomorrow has enough worries of its own (Matthew 6:34). That leaves the present.
When Jesus taught us how to pray, He did not say “Give us this week our daily bread” or “Give us this month our daily bread” or “Give us this year our daily bread.” He prayed, “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Life is best lived one day at a time. Start each day with God and remember, “The Lord’s love never ends; his mercies never stop. They are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Gene passed away suddenly on December 12th, 2019 at his home. He was born January 16th, 1959 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to the late Robert Emmet McDonald and Mary Jean Jones. Gene graduated from Gull Lake High School in 1977. After graduating High School he worked for Waco Financial. After his children were born he became a stay at home father and purchased several rental investment properties. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed hunting, working on cars, wood working, bowling and golf. He dedicated his life to raising his children and taught them how to golf, bowl, fix cars, and remodel houses. He loved passing on his love of coin collecting to his grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jean Jones; father, Robert Emmet McDonald; grandparents, Thomas and Ruth Cunningham. He is survived by his children, Melissa (Lee) Jones and David (Megan) McDonald; grandchildren, Alexander Jones, Benjamin Jones and Adilynn Jones; and a sister Cheryl Jones. A private interment will take place in Yorkville Cemetery at a later date. A celebration of life will be held on January 8th, 2020 at the Lake Doster Clubhouse from 5-7pm In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family for his Grandchildren’s education.
Hugh passed away on December 27, 2019 at his home. He was a 1965 graduate of Maple Valley High School where he excelled at Football. A veteran, Hugh proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Hugh ran an auto parts store and did excavating for many years before becoming an auto salesman for over thirty years. An accomplished banjo player, Hugh could often be found playing at the Old Plank Road in Plainwell. Hugh was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved animals of all kinds, especially his dogs and horses. Hugh is survived by his significant other: Kris Newland; sons: Ryan (Diana Small) Allen and Aaron (Francine) Allen; grandson: Carter Allen; sister: Marylou (Ken) Heikka; nephew: John Heikka; close friends: Steve (Deb) Newland; Adrian (Mikey) Newland; Craig (Linda) Newland, and Nate (Tasha) Newland and former spouse: Janet (Hill) Pollard. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Ricky McPherson. According to Hugh’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. The family would like to thank all of the first responders for their care of Hugh.
