Virginia Ann (Gilbert) WITHERELL AGE 73 - PLAINWELL, MI

Virginia passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at home on January 3rd, 2017. She was born January 18th, 1943, the first daughter of the late Edward and Alice Gilbert. She graduated from Otsego High School in Otsego, MI, in 1961.

On December 17th, 1962 she married Ed Witherell of Kalamazoo, MI, who survives.

She will be lovingly remembered by her two children, Wendy (the late Frank) Whitney and Tom (Sheri Kennedy) Witherell. Her grandchildren are Kayla (Josh) Murdock, Frank Whitney IV, Brenna Whitney and Derek Witherell. She also has two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Hannah Murdock. Her siblings are Sandra (Tony) LoPresto, Charles (Lou Ann) Gilbert and sister-in-law Kay Horton, as well as several nieces and nephews. You often would find her at her child’s or grandchild’s sporting event. She loved her family and working with children, as evident by her 20 year career as a daycare professional.

She also loved to dance, especially country western dancing. She and Ed would spend many of their nights dancing together. While dancing through Texas, the south, and all over the Midwest, she developed the love of traveling which led to her favorite trip, spending three weeks in England and Scotland with Ed. She also had a deep love of all animals she came across. Whether it would be dogs, cats, horses, or sheep, she loved them all. Cremation has taken place and a memorial luncheon will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice in Allegan, MI. OBITUARIES Charleen PERRY

AGE 87 - VICKSBURG, MI (Formerly of Plainwell) Charleen passed away Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Rose Arbor Hospice. She was born May 19, 1929 in Kalamazoo to Harlo and Helen (Price) Perry. For 47 years she had worked at Pearson Rumble Insurance Company in Plainwell. Charleen enjoyed doing word searches, watching sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, traveling and fellowship with her friends at church.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Plainwell and Northeastern Baptist Church in Kalamazoo. Surviving are her siblings, Elaine Keith of Plainwell and John (Dawn) Perry of CA; niece and nephews, Sherman (Karen) Couk of Vicksburg, Crystal (James IV) Bennett of CA and Michael (Theresa Choi) Perry of CA. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Norma (Charles) Couk. Friends may visit with Charleen’s family starting at 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Greg Bishop officiating. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Charleen may be made to the Northeastern Baptist Church of Kalamazoo.

AGE 82 - PLAINWELL, MI Barb passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at her home in Plainwell. She was born February 5, 1935 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Russell and Vivian (Revoir) VanAntwerp.

For many years Barb had worked at Parker Hannifin until her retirement. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and going on senior casino trips. On August 18, 1997 in Plainwell she married Bernie Pratt who survives. Also surviving are her children, Crystal (Jim) Veldt of FL, Arthur Roebuck of Plainwell and Steve (Robin) Folk of Otsego; step-children, Shirley (Bill) Sutton, Kenton Pratt, Julie Yarbrough and Peggy Ratulowski; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren along with her sisters, Carol (Harold) Dunlap of Allegan and Erna (Lonnie) Vincin of Kalamazoo. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Richard, Robert and Russell; sons, Douglas, Austin and Marty and step-son, Kennith Pratt. Cremation has taken place. Eileen J. HOGUE AGE 79 - OTSEGO, MI

Eileen passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born April 2, 1937 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Alfred and Eva (Stoughton) Hagen. Eileen was an Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. For many years she had been a nurse’s aide and enjoyed caring for the residents at the Life Care Center in Plainwell and running the activities in the recreations room. In her spare time she enjoyed growing flowers, doing yard work, taking camping trips up north, playing her lowrey organ and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Steve (Martha) Hall, Terri Long and Mike (Karla) Hogue; grandchildren, Lindsay (Nick) Umsted, Ashley (Erik) Prins, Matt Long, Tylor (Cali) Bailey, Michelle (Dillon) Hogue and Brooke Hogue; 6 great-grandchildren along with her brothers, Richard (Shirley) Hagen and Ken (Marge) Hagen. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, William Warner and sisters, Alfreida Scamehorn and Dorothy Wilkins. Friends may visit with Eileen’s family from 6-8 P.M., Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 28, 2017 with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. “THE WORTH OF ONE”

Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” (John l0:14)

We are obsessed with numbers. We have Social Security numbers, Driver’s license numbers, cell numbers, medical record numbers, bank account numbers, etc. There is a local business I occasionally frequent and the first thing they ask for is my number. I am not saying numbers are unimportant.

My point: With God we are persons not numbers. Do we find this hard to believe? The psalmist contemplated the smallness of humankind in the universe: “When I consider the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:3, 4). Think of this. God has placed l00 billion stars in our galaxy and l00 billion galaxies in the universe. Yet He cares for us.

The present world population is 7.5 billion and fast approaching 8 billion persons born in the image of God. Yet God knows us all by name and by need. During His days on earth, Jesus often left the crowd to minister to an individual. In the parables, our Good Shepherd searched for a lost sheep (Luke l5:7), a lost coin (Luke l5:l0) and a lost son (Luke l5:24).

God and one can make a difference. God took a reluctant shepherd boy (Moses) and made him a courageous leader. God took a harem girl (Esther) and made her a heroine. God took fishermen and made them disciples. God took a terrorist (Saul) and made him into a great apostle (Paul).

Whenever we are prone to think less of ourselves, let us remember we are important to God. Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to see myself as you see me … as a person of worth and promise.
