FIREFIGHTERS NEEDED The Otsego Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of firefighter. The Otsego Fire Department is a paid on-call department and firefighters respond to fires and emergency situations as their own schedules allow. Qualifications for this position include: * Minimum eighteen (18) years of age. * Residence located within a four minute response time from the Otsego Fire Station. * Valid Michigan driver’s license, with a good driving record. * Successful completion of Otsego Fire Department physical ability test. * Ability to successfully complete training courses designated by the department. OBITUARIES Elwood SCHWARTZ AGE 91 – OTSEGO, MI Formerly of Hopkins
Elwood passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016 in Wyoming, Michigan. He was born February 28, 1924 in Sparta the son of Conrad and Clara (Kraft) Schwartz. Elwood was a 1942 Hopkins High School graduate who grew up and spent his adult life in Hopkins. As a young man he had worked doing construction in Grand Rapids until he purchased his parents’ dairy farm in 1957 and worked until his retirement in 1990. Elwood enjoyed playing basketball and following both high school and college sports. He loved following girls softball and had attended almost every Hopkins High School football game. He was an avid bowler in many leagues over the years. Elwood was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego. Surviving are his children, Bette (Jim) Stewart of VA, David Schwartz of Hopkins, Shirley (Robert) Smith of VA and Cindy (Howard) Hunt of Otsego; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanor in 2007; son, Richard and siblings, Howard, Evelyn Brenner and Harlow. Friends may visit with Elwood’s family from 2-5 P.M. on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 25, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego with Pastors Steve Otto and Andrew Martens officiating. Private family burial will take place at Maplewood Cemetery in Hopkins. Contributions in memory of Elwood may be made to Peace Lutheran Church. William S. WYANT
AGE 80 – KALAMAZOO, MI William passed away Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. He was born March 6, 1935 in Kalamazoo the son of William and Edith (Smith) Wyant. Bill served his country in the US Marine Corp during the Korean War. For 30 years he had worked as a shipping clerk for Upjohn Pharmaceutical. Bill was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Otsego Elks Lodge. In his spare time he enjoyed coaching baseball, being a referee for area basketball games, going to the casino, golfing at the Mulhurst Golf Course where he was a member, traveling south especially to Gulf Shores, AL for the winter, and riding his three wheeled bike around to visit with all of his neighbors. In August of 1959 he married Carolyn VanDyke who survives. Also surviving are his children, Steve (Margui) Wyant of Kalamazoo, William Alan (Cathy) Wyant of Martin, Marshall Wyant of Kalamazoo and Barbara (Steven) Woodard also of Kalamazoo; 6 grandsons; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings, Gordon Wyant of Grand Haven, Jackie Seager of FL and Michael Wyant of Kalamazoo along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of Ashes will take place in the spring at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Betty L. KELLOGG AGE 84 – PLAINWELL, MI
Betty passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016 in Kalamazoo. She was born March 17, 1931 on St. Patrick’s Day in Hornersville, Missouri to Emma and Albert (Doc) Abraham. She has gone on to meet her husband Bobby, daughter Debbie, granddaughter Kim, mom and dad, her sister and 3 brothers and the many other people that she touched in this life. Betty dedicated her life to a handicapped son, but there was always room in her life for every family member that needed her. Her family was a world of people whose lives she touched. Her house was an open door and a cup of coffee and if you were hungry she would add a cup of water to the beans and make another pan of cornbread. She also had a great love for sewing the perfect garment for some occasion, the dancing she so loved to do whether she was garage dancing or at the club with her sisters. We that are left will miss her every day for the patience, beauty and peace that she brought to the world. Betty is survived by her children, Dixie (Jack) Helms of Otsego, Dennis Kellogg of Plainwell, Darrell Kellogg of Plainwell and Donna (Mike) Morrisette of Kalamazoo; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; her brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with Betty’s family from 4-7 P.M. Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a Funeral service will take place Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastors Mike Risner and Rick Sheldon officiating. AGE 69 – OTSEGO, MI Nada passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016 in Kalamazoo. Nada was born May 28, 1946 in South Haven the daughter of John and Geraldine (Pratt) Nilsen. She loved reading and enjoyed volunteering with the Friends of the Otsego Library. Nada had worked at Kal-Equip and Upper Crust. On September 30, 1966 in Otsego she married Alvin Sweet who survives. Also surviving are her children, LaRayne (Schmitt) Sweet, Genni (Tom) Plyley, Beth Try (Bob Randall) and John (Danelle) Sweet; her grandchildren, Patricia Sweet, Ryan (Alyssa) Goodacre, Tamara Goodacre, Adam Sweet, Devon Plyley, Jenna Collins, Amanda Lawrence, Jordan Kellerman, Dana Plyley, Alexis Schmitt, Xander Sweet and Zane Sweet; 14 great grandchildren and her sister Pati (Don) LaRowe. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother John K. Nilsen. Friends may visit with Nada’s family from 5-7 P.M. Larry J. MYERS AGE 68 – OTSEGO, MI
Larry passed away Monday, January 18, 2016 at his home in Otsego. He was born July 4, 1947 in Allegan to Clifford and Lois (Sweet) Myers. The youngest of 11 children he grew up on the family farm in Trowbridge Township. Larry was a 1965 Allegan High School graduate and joined the US Army in 1966 serving in Vietnam. After returning home in 1968 he met Jan Ellwood in Saugatuck, MI and they were married February 14, 1969 in Otsego at the United Methodist Church. Larry started working for General Motors in December of 1968 at the Comstock plant and was transferred to the Marion, IN plant in 1993 where he worked for four years before returning to the area. In 2006 after 37 ½ years he retired from the 34th St. plant in Grand Rapids. In 1998 he went to work part time for Winkel Funeral Home until 2015. Larry was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Stephany in 1970 and Stacey in 1972. He loved his family and always worked hard to provide for them. Helping his girls sneak a snack after their mom said they couldn’t have one was one of his biggest jobs. He was an avid bowler having bowled a perfect game in 2011 and also enjoyed golfing. One of his greatest loves was the Detroit Tigers. He was always willing to take the girls fishing with him and they always talked baseball. Larry was a hard worker who loved big hugs and smiles. He enjoyed woodworking and made several pieces of various furnishings for his home and took pride in the wooden cradles he made for each of his grandchildren along with the memorial flag boxes he made for the funeral home, friends and family. Larry served proudly for 15 years on the Otsego Fire Department. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Jan; his daughters, Stephany Rose of Richland and Stacey (Gregory) Herman of San Francisco, CA; grandson, Nathan Campbell of Plainwell; granddaughter, Michela Rose of Richland; his siblings, Bertha Miller of Allegan, George Myers of FL, Irene Miller of Kalamazoo, Eugene Myers of Plainwell, Leslie Myers of FL, Marion Myers of Holland, Lucille Harrington of Comstock and Kathleen Groth of Martin; his nephew who was like his brother, Jerry Myers of Allegan and several nieces, nephews, greats and greatgreats. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Elton Myers and his oldest brother, Vernon Myers. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego with Celebrant Bill Rose and Pastor John Moore officiating. Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post #3030. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Larry may be made to the American Cancer Society, Otsego VFW Post #3030, Otsego Fire Department or to Reverence Home Health & Hospice. Faith
When it appears all is lost, that is where faith comes in. “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1). A good example of starting from scratch is the story of Thomas Carlyle. There was a time in his life when he was living in dire want. He had labored to write the first volume of the history of the French Revolution. It was his greatest work which brought to him the greatest possibility of success. When he finally finished his first volume, he took it to John Stuart Mill to read. Mill sat by his fire and read the manuscript page by page. One morning the maid was cleaning the room and, thinking they were meaningless pieces of paper, used them to start a fire. Of course when Carlyle learned that the work he devoted himself to went up in flames, he felt depressed and defeated. He vowed he would never write again. Then one day he looked out the window and saw a man building a brick wall. He observed as the man picked up one brick at a time and set it in place. Hope that had died began to live again within him. He decided he would re-write the book, one page at a time. The good news is that God specializes in new starts. We can start from scratch, but we have to have faith. Faith is our link to God and our only hope for new beginnings. Prayer: Dear Lord, give me a fresh start today. Amen.
