“IT IS BETTER TO BE BLESSED THAN HAPPY”

Everyone wants to be happy. The second draft of the American Declaration of Independence states that the pursuit of happiness is our inalienable right.
But do we really want happiness? The word happiness is built on the word “hap” which literally means: chance. Happiness depends on the circumstances of life over which we have no control. For example, an unforeseen illness or sudden loss can turn happiness into sorrow in an instant. Jesus used the word blessed. At least eighty-eight times He told people how to be blessed. The word blessed means: an inner joy that is untouchable by the world; dwelling closer to the heart of God. Thus, it is better to be blessed than to be happy. In the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) Jesus points to eight qualities of character which brings eternal joy. These principles of living, also known as keys to the kingdom may be summarized as follows: l. Poor in Spirit - Recognizing our need for God.
2. Mourning - Inviting God into the broken places of our lives. 3. Meek - Trusting God to control our lives.
4. Hunger & Thirst for Righteousness - Wanting God more than anything else.
5. Merciful - Forgiving others as we ourselves have been forgiven. 6. Pure in heart - having Christ-like motives.
7. Peacemakers - building bridges, not walls in our relationships. 8. Persecuted for righteousness sake - being faithful unto death.
If we all lived by these principles, we would be better persons and our world would be a better place in which to live. Prayer: Thank you God for the blessing of your presence in my life. Amen.

Penny went to be with her Lord January 18, 2017. Penny was born October 10, 1963 in Jackson, MI; the daughter of Grats “Buster” and Hazel “Irene” (Baily) Howard. A homemaker, Penny enjoyed sewing and collecting antiques and knick knacks. Penny also enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, her dogs and cats, and a good margarita. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Penny is survived by a daughter: Ashley Bergeon, a son: Billy (Taylor) Bergeon, her former husband: Jim Bergeon, brothers: Buck (Birdy) Howard, David (Karen) Howard, and Kenneth Howard, sisters: Marcia (Rick) Wells, Vivian (John) Orrison, Betty Zugel, and Emily Howard, a sister in law: Linda Howard, grandsons: Eli, Evan and Colton, and several nieces and nephews. Penny was preceded in death by her parents, a brother: Kelly “Gene” Howard and a sister: Linda Howard. Penny’s family will receive friends Friday, 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the Pentecostal Church of Christ, 6097 Marsh Rd, Shelbyville; where her funeral service will be conducted Saturday, January 21, 2017, 11:00 AM, Pastor Rich Sheldon and Rev. Bonnie (Grooten, Mathis) JANKE AGE 61 - PLAINWELL, MI
Bonnie passed away on January 14, 2017 at the Wings Home in Allegan, MI. She was born in Ohio on October 6, 1955 and adopted by Ike and Winnie Grooten in 1957. She went to school at Portage Northern High School and graduated in 1973. She married Dexter Mathis on August 26, 1972 and divorced in 1988. She then married Edmund (Pete) Janke on May 10,1991. They were together until his passing on September 24, 2013. Bonnie had many occupations. She helped her first husband run his business, was an accountant, waitress, and retail manager for Dollar Tree. Bonnie was a life-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Otsego VFW and enjoyed volunteering. Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by Melanie (Jason) Hooker, Mark Mathis, Matt (Alesia) Mathis, Marsha (Joe Cannon) Mathis, Shena Grooten, Cindy, Mason Hooker, Blake Jameson, Brendon Jameson, Annabelle Mathis, Mikayla Hooker, Liberty Mathis, Philip Mathis, Adelyn Jameson, Benjamin Mathis, as well as many in-laws that she cherished, nieces and nephews from both marriages, and many special friends including LaRayne Sweet, Rhonda Kimberlin, and Ashley Spinner who were with her in the end. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Celebration will be held January 29, 2017 from 2-6pm at the Otsego VFW Post 3030 located at 124 N. Farmer St., Otsego, Michigan. The family of Bonnie Janke wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Leipman, the incredible staff at Allegan General Hospital and the staff and nurses, especially Donna, at the Wings of Hope Hospice. Donald D.WILSON AGE 57 - OTSEGO, MI
Don passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 in Kalamazoo. He was born February 10, 1959 in Plainwell the son of Donald and Eileen (Smith) Wilson. Don had been a snowmaker at Bittersweet when it first opened and had spent 25 years at Parker Hannifin Brass. He lived on his grandfather’s farm where he enjoyed riding horses. Don also loved riding motorcycles, getting muddy on his quads, camping, spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing and line dancing with the Bresa Brats. Don was always up for an adventure and had a great sense of humor. He was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge, the Goble’s Drift Busters Snowmobile Club, the Kalamazoo Rod and Gun Club and had been a volunteer fireman like his dad, brother and son for the Alamo Fire Department. On July 30, 1983 in Allegan he married Denise Rowley who survives. Also surviving are his children, Lorrie (Brad) Bush of Martin and Jeremy Wilson of Alamo; grandchildren, Blake, Ashley, Ethan and Alison; his parents; siblings, Clayton (Barbara) Wilson and Diana (Douglas) Leffring along with many nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held January 16, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Bill Rose officiating. Cremation followed. Margaret “Margo” D. ROBERTS AGE 63 - OTSEGO, MI
Margo went peacefully home to our Lord on Tuesday, January 10. Margo was born on January 14, 1953, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Darwin and Doris Sanford, who preceded her in death. Margo is survived by her loving husband Art, her two daughters, MiChele (Mark) Ferrier and Marsha Martin and her grandson Ethan McDonald, who recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout and brought her immense pride and joy. She is also survived by her loving brother Steve (Iris) Sanford, mother-in-law Doris Schuiteboer and many other family members and loving friends who considered her family. Margo enjoyed a full life with a variety of accomplishments and far-reaching interests. Over the years she was employed at Parker, a beloved school bus driver for Otsego Public Schools, a licensed hairdresser and was a realtor at Cornell and Associates. As a nature lover Margo had achieved her Master Gardener certificate and enjoyed sharing her love and vast knowledge of plants and flowers with everyone. Her beautiful gardens were a labor of love. Also an avid hunter and fisher, Margo had even traveled to Africa for a hunting safari trip and was featured on a filming for Steve's Outdoor Adventures with her record book entry for a trophy waterbuck. A people person at heart Margo was a friend to anyone she met. As a faithful member of the Otsego United Methodist Church, Margo enjoyed attending Sunday school and Bible study. She loved to travel, going to the movies and visiting with friends. Margo was a gift to all who knew her and will be remembered for her wonderful smile and contagious laugh. Her strength, love, faith and compassion were an example to all and her amazing grace was shown throughout her recent battle with leukemia. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Margo's life was held on Saturday, January 14, which would have been her 64th birthday, at Otsego United Methodist Church. At Margo's request, in lieu of flowers please send memorials or donations to Hope Lodge, The American Cancer Society in Grand Rapids or the Otsego United Methodist Church.
