What would the world look like if we practiced graceful living? By that I mean treating others with respect and eliminating name-calling, inflammatory speech, demonizing and discrimination of every kind. One of the great examples of practicing grace in human relationships comes from our own American history. This story is outrageous, unimaginable and impossible to think of in modern day partisan politics. In l860 a prairie lawyer and former one-term congressman surprised the country by defeating three prominent opponents to win the Republican nomination for President. What is even more amazing is that when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, he appointed all three rivals – William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase and Edward Bates – to his cabinet! When asked why he would fill his cabinet with rivals, Lincoln replied that he was simply trying to include the most qualified persons to help lead our country through some of its darkest times. Lincoln said, “Kindness can be the greatest gift that you can give a person. Especially when they are not expecting it.” Grace may be defined as undeserved favor. Our entire Christian faith is built on grace. We are saved by grace (Ephesians 2:5), justified by grace (Romans 3:24), strengthened by grace (2 Corinthians 12:9) and led by grace (2 Timothy 2:2). Jesus invites us to share God’s love (grace) with others, especially those who may be undeserving of it (Ephesians 4:32). Grace – let this be our word for the 2024. Let us live it out in our relationship with others.

Doris passed away, peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Alamo Nursing Home. She was born in Brookings County, South Dakota, on January 11, 1935, the daughter of Louie and Elsie (Meier) Krogmann. She grew up on the family farm and moved to Michigan in the early 1950’s. For 14 years Doris was a bus driver and later became the first director of transportation for Plainwell Community Schools until 1995. Doris had an adventurous spirit and loved traveling. After retiring she sold her home and for 12 years lived full time in her motor home. Doris traveled between Michigan, Florida and South Dakota where she worked in the tourist industry for several summers. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and Bingo and socializing with her many friends. Surviving are her children, Roger (Sandy) Evink of Otsego, Jerald Evink also of Otsego and Beth (Chris) Ronfeldt of Kalamazoo; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-greatgrandchildren; siblings, Marian, Marie, Deloris and Vernon along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Jeffrey Evink and siblings, Louie Krogmann, Lillie Evink, Elsie Heller, John Krogmann and David Krogmann. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego, with celebrant Nyla Merrill officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery at a later date. Contributions in memory of Doris may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Phillip J. “Butch” GLASS, Jr.

AGE 59 - PLAINWELL, MI Butch passed away, Saturday, January 13, 2024, in Grand Blanc. He was born June 4, 1964, in Grand Rapids, the son of Phillip and Sandra (Bueche) Glass. He graduated from Martin High School in 1982 and worked in construction. Butch was very handy and enjoyed fixing and building things and running his bobcat. He liked working on cars and racing at the Kalamazoo Speedway. Butch was happiest when relaxing in his yard with his dog, Sammy and visiting with his father. On November 4, 2000, he married Melinda Hall who survives. Also surviving are his daughter who was his pride and joy, Victoria (Jesse James Roe) Glass of Plainwell; his father, Phillip; sister, Terri (Denny) Ricketson of Caledonia; step-siblings, Shannon Jones, Rickie (Meghan) Jones, Sissy (Mike) White and Joey (Stacy) Jones; aunts, Shirley (John) Kelly and Sharon Cook; mother-in-law, Nancy Hall; sisters-in-law, Wendy (Tim) Graves and Sandy (David) LaFountaine; nieces and nephews, Ryan (Megan), Staci (Nate), Troy (Elizabeth), Kristen, Lauren (Matthew) and Macey (Adrianna); great-nephews, Easton, Colton, Jaxson and Carson; a great-niece on the way; his nephew who was like a son, Logan Schiero and Hannah Zwart who was like a daughter. Luke 1:36-38 REFLECTION: Notice the word “impossible” in the above verse from Luke. John Calvin writes, “We ought always to contemplate his boundless power, that it may strengthen our hope and confidence.” The role of the angel was to confirm God’s promises. Mary accepts God’s blessing by saying, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” This is a wonderful example of Mary’s faith being compared to the faith of Abraham. God first gave this promise of a Savior to Abraham. Romans 4:1-3 Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way. For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” By accepting Jesus Christ as the one true Son of God, we too embrace the overshadowing power of the Holy Spirit. It is by faith alone in Christ, that we have new life. The real proof of faith comes to us when we restrain our minds from worldly reason, and dare be captive to the power of God’s Word. Mary devotes herself to God without reservation. Unbelievers withdraw from God’s hand, making a conscious effort to deny Christ. When the “gift of faith” is presented to you be ready to yield in obedience. Here are Calvin’s final words on these verses, “Mary yields and surrenders herself to God. She is convinced of the power of God, follows cheerfully where he calls, trusts also to his promise, and eagerly desires to accomplish the task.” When we accept Christ, we become examples of Abraham’s and Mary’s faith, for we have become a part of God’s redemptive plan to make all things new. PRAYER: Lord God of heaven and earth, you have crowned your Son with glory, and given him all authority over the living and the dead. I will continue to praise you for keeping your promises, first to Abraham, then to Mary, and now to me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. Need a Bible? Hammy was brought to the Allegan County animal shelter as an emaciated lost dog with a severe leg injury. X-rays showed her leg was full of bullet shrapnel, so her leg needed to be amputated. Now Hammy’s the most terrific tripod in town! She doesn’t let only having 3 legs hold her back at all. She’s been able to heal in a wonderful foster home. Here’s what her foster mom has to say: “Hammy has become so playful, loves balls! Squishing, squeaking, chasing... loves them! And her bones. She is almost always found sleeping belly up. She enjoys long sniffing walks to the park. She loves car rides but will always steal the drivers seat when I have to run in somewhere. She will sit for her food dish, still working on the "wait" part. We've been working on leash manners (does best in a harness) and gentle treat taking.” At this time, Hammy wants to be treated like the princess she is as the only pet in the home. She could potentially join a home with older, respectful kids. Hammy has come so far in her healing journey and is so happy to have been given a second chance at life.
