Rosemary V. CHAMBERLIN

Jim passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Metro Health Hospital. He was born November 10, 1951 in Kalamazoo, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Brockie) Mitchell. As a young man Jim worked at a tree nursery and Wells Aluminum in Parchment. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during Vietnam. After his honorable discharge he worked at Menasha Paper as a journeyman millwright until its closing. He went on to work at Bowers Aluminum in Kalamazoo until his retirement. Jim also owned and operated a farm with his family. He was a jack of all trades and could fix anything. In his spare time he enjoyed camping, target shooting, watching westerns and reading. Most of all Jim loved spending time with his grandchildren. On July 3, 1971 at the Church of the Nazarene in Kalamazoo, he married Deborah Perkins who survives. Also surviving are his children, Debby (Earl) Young and Renee Mitchell; grandchildren, Dustin Mitchell, Alek Culver, Madison Culver and Isaac Culver; great-grandchildren, Jamison and Leighton Culver; siblings, Kay, Denice, Sherry and Jeff; brothers –in-law, Steve and Danny Perkins; aunt and uncle, Jim and Doris Brown along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws and brother, Charles “Chuck” Mitchell. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial honoring Jim will be held in the spring. Rosemary passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Alamo Nursing Home. She was born June 15, 1927 in Lansing, the daughter of Francis and Leona (Postlewaite) Vorce. As a young woman Rosemary worked at Upjohn. She later held positions at Parker Hannifin, Kalamazoo Child Guiding Clinic and in the 80’s and 90’s at Star Accounting until her retirement. Rosemary loved animals and in her free time enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, playing bridge, golfing and doing puzzles. She was the secretary for the 33rd Infantry Reunion Group and was a volunteer and regional director for Youth for Understanding. She was active with the American Legion along with her husband. On February 19, 1949 she married Clare Chamberlin who passed away in 2011. Surviving are three sons, Douglas (Gay Guard) Chamberlin of Chicago, Gregory (Tresca Allsman) Chamberlin of Hopkins, MN and Steven (Katherine Vasetsky) Chamberlin of Kalamazoo and grandchildren, Dylan Chamberlin, Robert Elwell and Grace Moret. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Beverly, Dorothy, Douglas and Charles. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 7, 2021 at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Contributions in memory of Rosemary may be made to the Otsego United Methodist Church. AGE 81 - ALLEGAN, MI Carol Ann Reed, 81 traded her walker for wings when she passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers, a sister-in-law, a daughter-in-law, a granddaughter Ashley Colburn and her beloved son Larry Colburn. Carol was raised in the Chicago area until she fell in love with west Michigan and moved her family here in 1978. Landing in Allegan and spending 33 years at the Perrigo company brought Carol much enjoyment and close friendships that continue today. Following her 2011 retirement Carol moved to Wisconsin, surprising all of her children by becoming a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan, never missing a televised game, even upon her return to Michigan. She will be fondly remembered for her love of animals and all things leopard. Carol will always be remembered and deeply missed by her 5 children and their families; Michael (Lori) Colburn of Allegan, Janet (Donald) Barz of Holland, Lori (Dave) Brandt of Hudsonville, Daniel (Katie) Colburn of St. Charles, Il and Christopher Thomas of Holland, as well as her sister, Joyce (Ed) Schmeda of Florida, 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and dear friends. To honor her wishes, no funeral service will occur. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be planned in the spring. Carol was a feisty, spirited, caring soul who has certainly left her mark on all who knew her. AGE 88 - PLAINWELL, MI Lillian passed away Thursday, January 7, 2021. She was born on August 10, 1932 to the late Milo and Emma (Bigelow) Holroyd. Lillian was united in marriage to the love of her life, Raymond W. Rackley on October 26, 1951 in Richland, MI. Lillian was a life long area resident of the Kalamazoo and Plainwell area. She enjoyed working for multiple area papermakers. Her Faith, marriage with Raymond and her family were her top priorities in her life until her ﬁnal day. She loved family vacations when her family was younger and was still included on many with her children after they were grown with their own families. She enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida, but not until after Christmas with all her family. Her spare time around home always seemed to involve her ﬂower and vegetable gardens. She always kept her Master Gardener certs up to date, so she could be involved in Plainwell area and her Florida winter home area community projects. Her genuine, warm smile, and strong personality made her endeared whether you were a neighbor or a co-worker. Lillian is survived by her children, Debra (Donald) Grooten, William (Robin) Rackley, Becky (David) Nooney and Jeffrey Rackley; 12 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; siblings, Elnora Lumbard and Arlene (Robert) Strong; and many nieces and nephews. Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Rackley; daughter-in-law, Sheila Rackley; and brothers, Thomas, Delbert, Wilbur, Milo II, Kenneth and Bob, and sisters Nellie, Mable, Edith, LaVon, Myrtle and Betty. A private memorial service at The First Baptist Church of Plainwell, MI will be by invitation only, because of the pandemic. Service will be on Friday January 15, 2021 At 11am. Alice passed away Thursday, January 7, 2021. She was born January 1, 1934 to the late George Washington Rasnake and Nora Hunter Rasnake in Caretta, West Virginia. Alice is survived by her former husband, James Fugate Sr; her best friend and brother, Jessie Rasnake of Martin, Michigan; 2 daughters, Kristy Huddleston (John) and Marlene Fugate (Fred Burris) both of Arkansas; a son, James Fugate Jr (Candy) of Michigan; grandchildren, Jordan McFarlane, Ashley Miller, Stephanie Gibson, Erik Freeman, Jennifer Sibley, Dakota Fugate and Dylan Fugate; 10 great-grandchildren, Laney, Taylor, Madelyn, Jack, Lillian, Gavin, Kyle, Stephen, Ethan and Dylan, numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Alice was a life-long Christian who loved the fellowship of her church family. Growing up in the hills of West Virginia, she developed many talents and a strong sense of independence. She will be remembered for her bountiful gardens and expert canning. She could identify every bird and tree, loved all things nature and landing a big ﬁsh. She was an amazing seamstress, quilter and oil painter who never passed up a good thrift sale. Her biscuits and gravy will be sorely missed. Alice was preceded in death by her loving daughter, Sandra Winn and her beautiful granddaughter, Rachel Freeman; brothers, John, Frank, Alfred, Marvin, Alvin, Corbett, Silas, George and Paul and sisters, Virgie, Mary, Ethel, Mae, Rosie, Margaret, Dellah and Sarah. Barbara J. VERNON AGE 98 - PLAINWELL, MI (Formerly of Sturgis)

Barbara went to her heavenly home Sunday morning January 10, 2021 at her home. She was a Christmas baby born December 25, 1922 in Genesee County, Michigan daughter of the late Frank and Enola (Dieck) Moore. Mrs. Vernon resided in Plainwell since 2014. She moved to Sturgis in 1955 from Flushing. On February 21, 1942 she married Bruce W. Vernon in Flushing. He preceded her in death November 9, 2002. Mrs. Vernon retired from the Gravi-Flo Corporation in Sturgis following several years of dedicated employment as the company switchboard operator. She also worked five years as a deputy with the St. Joseph County Sherriff Department. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening and loved playing bingo and cards. She is survived by three daughters: Carole (Michael) Darby of Richland, Kathryn Long of Plainwell and Janet Vernon of Plainwell; daughter-in law Debra (Denison) Vernon, 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bruce, son Thomas Vernon, sister Phyllis Dyball and brother Wayne Moore. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Vernon’s memory consider their favorite charity to receive it. Inaugural addresses from the Presidents of the United States have always set the tone for their presidency. Inaugural trivia includes the shortest speech of 135 words by George Washington (l793). William H. Harrison’s was the longest at 8,445 words (1841). The important truth is not the length but whether or not the promises are kept.

The very first inaugural address was made more than two thousand years ago when Jesus addressed His hometown in the synagogue at Nazareth. He chose to read from the prophet Isaiah (61:1, 2). His speech was less than fifty words, but He fulfilled every promise during His ministry on earth.

Borrowing from the prophet Isaiah, Jesus declared Himself as a preacher of good news, proclaimer, healer and deliverer. Just as the prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in the release of the children of Israel from Babylonian Captivity (538 b.c.), the hallmark of Jesus’ ministry on earth would be (and still is) helping people in need and bringing salvation to all who believe.

After reading from Isaiah, Jesus basically said, “I am the Person Isaiah is referring to in this passage.” It was a hard message for them to accept because: (1) Only a Messiah can make a statement like that. (2) They saw Him as nothing more than “the carpenter’s son.” (3) His message that God loves Gentiles (NonJews) just as much as Jews infuriated them. They would have run Him out of town had He not slipped away quietly (Luke 4:28-30).

They either loved Him or despised Him, but nothing stopped Him from fulfilling His earthly ministry. To this day His message is the same, He keeps His promises and His Kingdom rule is forever!

There is no need for an inaugural parade, inaugural balls or a swearing-in-ceremony. The work Jesus began so long ago will one day come to fruition and we will crown Him Lord of all!

On behalf of our board, staff, volunteers and those we serve – I just want to offer a heartfelt thank you to each of you who supported us in 2020 with prayers, food or finances. It has been a challenging year for all of us with Covid-19 in many ways. Some of us have lost loved ones. Some have lost jobs and physical connections with family and friends. At Christian Neighbors we have experienced change as well. But, when I count my blessings in the midst of all – we are so blessed by the outpouring of support. Because of your help we did not turn anyone away who needed food. We were able to help over 300 families with $92,000 in Emergency Financial Assistance, keeping them housed and with their utilities on. Because we could not meet in person, our Education Department had to learn how to create Educational Videos to share with the public. These rolled out in September and reached over 4900 people. Topics such as a 6-part Budgeting course, Setting Goals, You & Your Credit and Getting Organized are a few of the many on-line educational offerings aimed at helping individuals and families reach financial freedom. Beginning January 13, 2021 for 3 Wednesdays, we will have videos targeted for senior citizens on how to avoid being scammed.
