Genealogy was very important to Matthew, the gospel writer, and to the Jewish people. Some of us grew up with the King James Version of the Bible which reads, “Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob…” etc. Forty-two names in all! As Sunday school children we wondered how that could be significant.
The remarkable thing in the ancestry of Jesus is who was included. I just can't come up with the right words to express how much our family loves the City of Plainwell and the surrounding area. How do I begin to say thank you to all the friends and families we have here that have shown us their love and support?
Rick was always a person who had the right words for everyone and everything in any situation. I on the other hand, always get tongue-tied and can't get the words right.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for holding our family in your thoughts through all those days and nights we were at the hospital in Ann Arbor. We will never forget the outpouring of love, prayers and hugs that you all have sent our family.
To me, Rick was more than my best friend and loving husband of 47 years. He was the father of our sons: Bryon, Chris and Peter. Papa to our 5 grandchildren: Braylin, Mason, Brylee, Colin and Taylor. And a friend to all.
To call Rick a "People Person" would be a drastic understatement. He was the Mayor of this beautiful city for over 19 years. It's no secret that he was a favorite bartender at Joe's Pizza where he served up common sense, good stories and lots of laughter. He made everyone feel they had a friend. And they did.
Rick may not have been homegrown from Plainwell, but you would have never known that based on his love for this community and the people he served. He always wanted to do what was best for this city. What Rick enjoyed most was involving himself with the youth of the area, from coaching Rocket Football in the 70's to running rec programs in Plainwell throughout the years. Rick loved to read and write, but most of all he loved reading to children.
One thing he will be remembered for most is gathering up all of the little children, and those of us who are still children at heart, to help bring in the season of Christmas to our beautiful little town by lighting the Christmas tree and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!

AGE 78 - OTSEGO, MI Lynne Joyce (Jenkins) Neal, 78, of Otsego, passed away of natural causes surrounded by loved ones on Friday, November 29, 2019. Lynne was born in Boise, Idaho, the daughter of Earl and Ina Jenkins. She lived in several different states until she settled in southwest Michigan in 1969. She worked as a caretaker for the young and elderly, and was a proud mother of five daughters. She was married for 58 years to Donald Neal. Lynne was a talented artist with a beautiful skill in painting. Outside of her art she enjoyed bowling, golfing, and spending time in nature. Her family will cherish their memories canoeing and camping in the boundary waters of Minnesota. She is survived by former husband Donald Neal; daughters Terri Reeber, Julie (Dan) Andrus, Lora (Lyle) Whisler, Stephanie (Scott) Richardson, and Michelle (Christopher) Boulter; sister Leslie Jenkins; grandchildren Brian (Michelle) Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Autumn (Gregory) McKeown, Alex (Amelia) Johnson, Karrah Richardson, Faith Boulter, Brennan Richardson, Sydney Boulter, Piper Boulter, and Payne Boulter; and many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents Earl Jenkins and Ina (Lewis) Jenkins; brother, Leroy Jenkins; and grandson Neal Reeber. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 89 - KALAMAZOO, MI Donald Paul Chapman went peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, November 30, 2019. He was born in 1930 to parents, Roy and Iva Chapman. Don was a 1948 Plainwell High School graduate. He was employed by Schafer’s Bakery as a delivery salesman for 33 years. Following his retirement he fulfilled a dream of being in law enforcement by joining the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy in the Marine Division. He spent the next 13 years in service on the lakes of Allegan County and teaching boating safety at several schools in the county. Don loved the out-of-doors, enjoying especially tennis and softball. He was a deer hunter for over 70 years, hunting mostly in the Iron and Presque Isle counties of northern Michigan. He was married to Joanne Brown in 1949, celebrating 70 years of marriage this year. Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He left us with a legacy of many cherished and fun memories and will be missed greatly by his family. Surviving are his wife; sons, Michael of Brighton, Mark, John (Linda) and Aaron (Kathy) all of Kalamazoo and Eric (Jodi) of Allegan; fifteen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and brother, Dale (Leslie) Chapman. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David; son, Jeffrey and daughter-in-law, Patty. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service took place December 5, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Plainwell with Pastor George Osborn and Pastor Doug Kranenburg officiating. Contributions in memory of Donald may be made to First Baptist Church of Plainwell or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. Eileen passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. She was born June 22, 1930 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Dan and Elah (Schyuler) Smith. For many years Eileen had worked in food service at Otsego Public Schools until her retirement in 1995. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughter of the Nile. In her free time Eileen enjoyed square dancing, camping and fishing. On September 8, 1950 she married Donald E. Wilson who passed away in 2017. Surviving are her children, Clayton (Barbara) Wilson and Diana (Douglas) Leffring; daughter-in-law, Denise Wilson; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 2 greatgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Donald D. Wilson. A Funeral service took place at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Cremation followed. Walda passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at her home in Plainwell. She was born December 2, 1952 in Paw Paw the daughter of Walter and Patricia (Nastos) Travis. Walda was a 1971 Otsego High School graduate and member of the Honor Society. She had a love of music and enjoyed cooking especially for her granddaughters. Walda had a kind heart and enjoyed helping others. Surviving are her son, Nathan Bowe of Kentucky; granddaughters, Andrea and Kendra Bowe; siblings, George Travis of Martin, Brian Travis of Martin and Patrice Travis of Maryland; many nieces and nephews and her boyfriend, Curt Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 72 - OTSEGO, MI Phil passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. He was born August 7, 1947 in Plainwell the son of Leland and Irene (Johnson) Baker. Phil proudly served his country in U.S. Army. He was a 1965 Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. For many years Phil had owned and operated an insurance agency in Otsego. In his free time he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and traveling with his wife. He was a member of the Lake Doster Golf Course, Otsego Elks and First Congregational Church of Otsego. In 1969 he married his high school sweetheart, Paula Tice who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Lisa (Jon) Caldwell; grandchildren, Destiny, Trent and Marissa Baker and Jonathan and Noah Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Elijah and Gabriel and sister, Sharon (Dean) Myers. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Troy; great-granddaughter, Zharielle; brother, Gerald Baker and father and mother-in-law, Gerald and Jane (Goodall) Tice.
