“OBEDIENT FAITH”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38)
Mary, the mother of Jesus, experienced something all of us have experienced … fear. When the angel came to her announcing her central role in the Christmas story, Mary was “greatly troubled” (Luke 1:29). Was she simply afraid or did she feel inadequate? If either were true, she was neither the first nor the last to feel those emotions. Examples: • Moses in the desert (Exodus 3:11). • David, the psalmist (Psalm 51:11). • Joseph, the carpenter (Matthew 1:20). • John the Baptist (Matthew 3:l3, l4). • Shepherds in a field (Luke 2:9). • Apostle Paul (I Timothy 1:15). In a sense, Mary was an unlikely heroine in the Christmas story. According to the culture of her day, she had three things going against her: (1) She was young (2) she was poor (3) she was a woman. This only goes to show that God often uses the least likely people to carry on His work. It is not about our ability; it is about our availability. It is about discovering God as our source of adequacy. It is all about trust and obedience. Obedient faith is acting on the faith we have. It is doing our best and trusting God for the rest. Hence, Mary could say to the angel, “I am the Lord’s servant… May it be to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38). Mary found her mission, ministry and meaning through her relationship with God. So can we! “Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God” (2 Corinthians 3:4, 5). Prayer: Lord, may it be so for us. Amen.
