“THE GIFT OF GRACE”

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling with us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14) Let’s talk about another gift that cannot be bought from a catalog, in a store, over the telephone or online. It is one gift our country, our churches and families desperately need. I am talking about the gift of grace. Christ was born, full of grace and truth. The New World Translation of John 1:14 defines the grace of God as “undeserved kindness.” Would we offer the gift of grace (kindness) to those who are undeserving of it?
The resurgent interest in American television personality Fred Rogers is a good example of grace. Mr. Rogers said, “There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.”
Long before Mr. Rogers, Jesus showed grace by loving unlovable persons, listening to persons no one else had time for and by forgiving His enemies. Jesus was born kind. As John, the gospel writer said “full of grace and truth.” What does this mean? Jesus came as the incarnation of grace. Grace is truth lived out. Conversely, truth is grace lived out. Grace and truth always stand together.
In a world that is unkind, Christ comes as the author of grace. In a world where truth is relative, Christ comes as “the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6).
The message of grace and truth is both timeless and timely. Christmas is a time when we especially live with anticipation of the time to come when Christ shall reign supreme!
In the meantime, we affirm the familiar words of the Isaac Watts: “He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love, And wonders of his love, And wonders, and wonders of his love.”
Prayer: Dear Christ of Christmas. Come to us afresh with grace and truth. In Your strong name. Amen

Lillie Maggie MINSHALL AGE 83
AGE 92 - OTSEGO, MI
Gloria passed away at her home on December 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Kalamazoo, MI, on January 16, 1947, the daughter of the late Bernard and Dorothy (Keown) Upson Sr. She was known by many as "Glo" or "Glo Baby". She had a wonderful personality and loving spirit. She was a graduate of Comstock High School Class of 1965 where she was a drum Majorette. While attending Comstock she fell in love with her future husband, David Rayman. Gloria went on to attended Kellogg Community College and was later employed by the Upjohn Company. She spent most of her time working at the Brook Lodge Conference Center; she retired after more than thirty-two years of service. Gloria had a strong faith in the Lord and was a former member of Bethel Reformed Church. She believed in the power of prayer and always showed concern for those around her; even through her own illness and decline she never lost hope. Gloria's greatest joy in life came from her family. She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren. She was an involved and present mother and grandmother. She enjoyed attending the kids sporting events and was their biggest cheerleader. Gloria was a lovely woman who leaves behind the legacy of a life well lived; she will be missed by all who loved her. On November 26, 1966, she was united in marriage to David Rayman, who survives. They enjoyed fifty-three years together. She is also survived by two wonderful children, Matt (Stacie) Rayman, Jennifer (Rodd) Lanoue; three grandchildren, Tyler and Mattison Rayman and Brodie Lanoue; two siblings, Penny Shellenberg and Bernard Upson Jr.; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial service to honor her life will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at the Joldersma & Klein Funeral Home Kalamazoo beginning at 12:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 AM, one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or The Juvenile Diabetes Association of Michigan, c/o the funeral home. Lillie Maggie Minshall, Age 83, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, December 14th, 2019. Lillie was born October 9, 1936 to Elmer and Etola (Price) Coats. Lillie is survived by Daughter Pat (Jim) Culver, D a u g h t e r- i n - l a w Karen Flick, Granddaughters Sonya (Chris Delarosa) Hammond, and Cheryl (John) Boysen, Grandsons Jacob Evink, and Jared (Patricia) Flick, Great Grandchildren Dallas, Araya, Hayden, Molly, and Logan. Lillie was preceded in by her first Husband Ronald Flick, second Husband Orville Gene Minshall, and Son Charles David Flick. Lillie enjoyed working outside in her flowerbeds, yard, anything to get her hands in the dirt. She also enjoyed card games with Jan, Nancy, Pat and anyone else who wanted to play. Following her wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial service will be held Sunday, December 22nd at 3:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 280 Starr Rd, Plainwell, MI 49080. Evelyn passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at her home in Otsego. She was born November 1, 1927 in Otsego the daughter of John and Jennie (Arendsen) Boerman. Evelyn was a 1944 Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. Evelyn had worked at Woolworth and Upjohn and later owned and operated Klein’s Variety in Kalamazoo with her husband for 35 years. In her free time she enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, photography, birdwatching, stamp collecting and playing games. Evelyn loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their sporting events. She also enjoyed wintering in Florida. Evelyn was a member of the Martin Reformed Church and charter member of Haven Reformed Church in Kalamazoo. In 1948 at Martin Reformed Church she married George Klein and they enjoyed 72 years together. Surviving are her husband, George; her children, Judy (Mark) McMurray of Alamo, Patty (Gary Lakeman) Sutka of Otsego, Kathy (John Ness) Swinehart of Allegan and Paul Klein of Otsego; grandchildren, Scott McMurray, Jessica (Bryan) Cranson, Drew (Jenna) Kastran; Michael and Andrew Swinehart and Derek and Jared Klein; 4 great-grandchildren, Calista and Gabriella Cranson and Brooke and Colin Kastran; sister, Geraldine Berner; sister-in-law, Betty Welch along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Bob Sutka and brothers, Bob and Ken Boerman. Friends may visit with Evelyn’s family from 4-7 PM, Friday, December 20, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the Martin Reformed Church with Pastor Mark Heijerman officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later time at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Evelyn may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or the Martin Reformed Church.

Phillip Edward DUSSIA AGE 79 - PLAINWELL, MI
Phillip Edward Dussia passed away peacefully on December 17th, 2019. Phil was born on July 19th, 1940 in Plainwell and was the oldest son of Bernard and Verna (Darrow) Dussia. Five years later, Phil was joined by his brother, John Charles. Phil displayed skills and determination early, achieving Eagle Scout at an impressive age. He graduated from Plainwell High School in 1958 and went on to serve his country in the US Navy. Upon returning home from the Navy, he met the love of his life on a double date. Phil and Bernice (Davis) Dussia were married on August 4th, 1962. The following year, their daughter Deborah Lyn was born. A couple years after, their son John Owen came along. Phil was an extremely proud Dad to Debbie and John and supported any hobby they were interested in, well into their adulthood. Phil was a machinist and union president at Mead/Rock Tenn for many years. During that time, Phil and Bernice invested wisely in several rental homes. They were able to utilize their investments in later years to open a total of four assisted living homes, where their compassion for others was obvious by the beautiful homes they created for the residents. Phil had many talents, from singing and playing lead guitar in a band to creating ornate wood carvings and paintings. He also had many hobbies, including watching all sports, especially local, traveling, skiing, and coin collecting. He loved doing anything that involved his family getting together. Those that knew Phil knew his sense of humor, his ability to spark up a conversation with anyone, and his huge heart. What he really excelled at was being a grandfather. Ben, Brittany, Brad, and Jase could ask “Gramps” or “Papa Phil” to do just about anything with or for them and he would do it. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and a special aunt and uncle. He is survived by his wife, children Debbie (Jimmy) and John (Casie), his four grandchildren, and great-grandchildren Amon, Amarah, Logan, Allie, Talon, and Ava. A relaxed gathering of family and friends will take place on Friday, December 27th, 2019 from 1-3pm at McCowen Secord Funeral Home in Plainwell where a sharing of memories will take place at 2:30pm. Lawrence D. “Lon” DREWYOR, Jr.
AGE 77 - ORANGEVILLE, MI Lawrence Douglas Drewyor, Jr. passed away on December 15, 2019 at Wings Home. Lon was born on November 24, 1942 in Plainwell, the son of Lawrence Sr. and Marie (Burkhead) Drewyor. On January 6, 1962 Lon married the love of his life, Pauline Sparks who survives. Lon was active in the Orangeville community as an “original resident” and member of the House of Prayer. A veteran, Lon proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for five years. Lon was employed by Plainwell Paper for many years, he also owned a chainsaw shop and timber business. Lon's true passion was buying and selling horses, which he did for many years. Lon enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, riding Harleys, and working on old cars and hot rods. He also loved music, especially bluegrass and country, playing the bass and drums. Lon is survived by his wife of fifty eight years: Pauline Drewyor; sons: Scott (Shelly) Drewyor, Larry (Tammy) Drewyor, and Craig (Kelsey) Drewyor; daughters: Angie (Tim) Hall and Betty Jo (Andy) Berg; twenty grandchildren; many great grandchildren; brothers: Florian (Jan) Drewyor and Steve (Jane) Drewyor; sister: Kathy (Al) Schwennesen; and several nieces and nephews. Lon was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Gilbert Drewyor; sister: Harriot Teskey; grandson: Cody Berg; and great grandson: Caleb Duley. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at the Pentecostal Church of Christ. Burial took place in Oak Hill Cemetery.
