“LESSONS FROM THE PROPHECIES”

Prophets were men God called to speak God’s word to God’s people during the darkest days of Israel’s history. The word prophecy may be defined in at least two ways: (1) forth telling (“Repent and turn to God” and (2) foretelling.

Question: What do the prophecies of the coming of Jesus teach us? Here are a few considerations.

1. GOD HAS A PLAN FOR THE SALVATION OF THE WORLD. In Hebrews 1:1, 2 we read, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets … but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” This is what Roy Lesson said about God’s plan.

“If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent an educator. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. But since our greatest need was forgiveness, God sent us a Savior.” 2. GOD ALWAYS KEEPS HIS PROMISES.

There are thousands of promises in the Bible and God keeps every one! This includes the promises of His amazing grace, unconditional love, of the Holy Spirit, of prayer, of personal salvation and Heaven. God’s promises are dependable, unchanging, unbreakable, trustworthy, sure and irrevocable. In fact we, as believers, are “heirs of the promise” (Hebrews 6:17). 3. GOD IS IN CONTROL OF HISTORY.

God is sovereign. In Galatians 4:4 we read, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son …” In other words, Jesus came at the right time, the right place and for the right purpose. Here are just a few examples: He came as Heir to the Throne of David (Isaiah 9:7; Matthew 1:1). He was born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1). He was born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14; Luke 1:26, 27).

Since we are living on this side of the prophecies, we can rejoice in our salvation. We can be people of the Promise. We can trust in the sovereignty of God.

Sierd “Butch” HOEKSTRA, Jr.

Ronald passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at his home in Otsego. He was born in Plainwell on February 29, 1936 the son of Ronald and Maxine (Sheldon) McFanin. Ron proudly served his country in the U.S Marines. He had owned and operated McFanin Construction for many years until his retirement. In his spare time Ron enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego. On February 22, 1959 in Lafayette, Georgia he married Kay Kissinger who survives. Also surviving are his children, Brad (Kimm Ray) McFanin, Ronda Penny, Kim Gillies, Ron (Mary) McFanin, Brian (Kelly) McFanin, Colleen (Ward) Litchfield, Christina (Todd) Back and Amanda Arthur; daughter-in-law, Gail McFanin; 26 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and his sister, Marva Curry. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael McFanin; sons-in-law, Don Penny and Ryan Arthur and his brother, Roger McFanin. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial service was held Friday, November 30, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego with Pastor Paul Laborde officiating. Burial of ashes at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Butch passed away Thursday, 22, November 2018 at his home in Martin. He was born February 18, 1937 the son of Sierd and Grace (Van Dyke) Hoekstra. Butch proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He had worked at West Tab Paper Mill and at Lapham Heating and Cooling until his retirement. Butch enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting. Most of all he loved his family and spending time with them. He was a member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030 and the Eagles Aeries #2093 of Medford, Oregon. On January 16, 1960 at the Martin Methodist Church he married Marlene Boniface who survives. Also surviving are his children, Randy (Dawn Hodges) Hoekstra of Shelbyville and Todd (Sheila) Hoekstra of Kalamazoo; 3 grandchildren, Tracy (Raigen) Blake, Scott (Katlynn) Hoekstra and Trevor (Lauren) Hoekstra and his siblings, Albert (Florence) Hoekstra and Gertrude Hoekstra along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Jose Talsma and Flora Zeinstra. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration will be held Friday, November 30, 2018 from 4-7 P.M., at the Otsego VFW Post #3030. Private family burial of ashes will take place at East Martin Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Butch may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or to Boys Town. Ronald passed away Nov. 20, 2018 at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1938. He was a member of St. Ambrose Parish. Ron retired form James River Corp. in 1994. He loved all sports, especially golf & swimming. He is survived by his wife Ruth, 2 sons Dennis and David (Karen), 4 grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Andrew, and Sarah Mitchell, also 2 nephews Tom and Tony Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be celebrated Friday, December 14th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church, 1628 East G Ave. Parchment, MI. Wilma GREGORY AGE 90 - OTSEGO, MI

Wilma Pauline Gregory, a lifelong resident of Otsego, MI died peacefully in her home on the 20th of November 2018 surrounded by her loved ones. Born on October 28, 1928, the daughter of Clarence and Sarah (Gearhart) Wollenhaupt. Wilma married the love of her life, Donald Gregory, on March 22, 1947. Together they raised five children. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Don on May 20th 1997 and her son Bill on December 5th, 2006. Her spirit is carried on by her two sisters Mary Drainer and Sally Hendrixson, her four children Terry Watson and Ron Everitt, Clarence “Greg” and Joan Gregory, Dawn and David Nelson, Deb and Ralf Kosowicz. Eight grandchildren Tony (Shannon) Randall, Nicole Gregory Sweeney, Cody(Danna) Gregory, Stacey Taplin, Jamie Nelson, Kristina (Cheyenne) Abnet, Tyler Esper, Brett Gregory and 12 great grandchildren. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Wilma during her 90 years. She taught anyone who wanted to learn how to bake her famous pies, make freezer corn, jams, jellies and sweets unimaginable. Give to every charity that asks. Choose to believe the best about what they do with your money, no matter what your children say. She never had it in her to say no to anyone in need. She will be missed terribly by all those who knew and loved her. Cremation has taken place according to her wishes. Funeral services were held, November 28, 2018 at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Burial of ashes will follow at Mt. AGE 83 - KALAMAZOO, MI Virginia Mary Irons passed away Friday, November 23, 2018, surrounded by loved ones at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born at home in Mesick, MI in 1935 to Magnus and Mary Hoseit and lived there until moving to Kalamazoo. In 1976 Virginia graduated from Tracy Beauty Academy, after which she decided to study for and received her GED high school certificate in September 1977. This enabled her to continue her cosmetology studies, becoming an instructor in December of that same year. For a few years she taught cosmetology at Tracy Beauty Academy, then teaching at American Beauty College in Kalamazoo, where she experienced first-hand the tornado of May 13, 1980 that devastated the downtown area. She loved spending time with her family, watching butterflies and nature programs on TV, and before succumbing to arthritis, was a wonderful seamstress. Virginia is survived by her children, Robert (Tammy) Bailey of Kalamazoo, Louis “Zeke” Irons of California, Joyce Buckallew of Kalamazoo and Timothy Irons of Kalamazoo; 8 grandchildren; a sister, Ella (Jerry) Long of Cadillac, MI and many nieces and nephews. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Private burial of ashes will take place at Mesick-Sherman Cemetery in Mesick, MI at a later time. Contributions in memory of Virginia may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice where she received wonderful care for the past two months and to whom we are eternally grateful. Berniece BURCHETT AGE 100 - OTSEGO, MI

Berniece passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2018 in Otsego. She was born November 14, 1918 in Monterey Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan the daughter of Nick and Anna (Brenner) Boerman. She was a beautiful seamstress and made clothing for her children and herself. She enjoyed doing volunteer work including den mother for scouts, band boosters and the Apple Dumpling Gang at the Otsego United Methodist Church of which she was a member. She also enjoyed summers at Crooked Lake and traveling. Her family was very important to her and very supportive. She was a wonderful mother and she enjoyed an abundance of visitors during her stay at Vicinia Gardens. On May 16, 1936 in Goshen, IN she married Loren Burchett who preceded her in death in 1997. Berniece is survived by her children, Stan (Charlotte) Burchett of Kalamazoo, Sandra Morey of Plainwell and Barbara (Bob) Fuller of Otsego; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Burchett; 9 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Dan and her siblings Donald and Jean and her son-in-law Mick Morey. Funeral services were held November 24, 2018 at the Otsego United Methodist Church, Pastor Joe Shaler officiated. Garry PARRISH AGE 72 - OTSEGO, MI

Garry passed away Monday, November 26, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Garry L. Parrish was born to James and Naomi (Punches) Parrish on June 8, 1946 along with his identical twin brother, Larry in Plainwell, Michigan. He was a 1964 Otsego High School graduate and a lifelong resident of the area. Garry was in the U.S. Army in the 196 Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam in 1967-1968. He worked at a retail store for 43 years retiring in 2006. Garry was a life member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030 and was commander for 1 year and Quartermaster for several years. He loved his post very much and tried to do all he could for it. He helped to start the fish fries several years ago and had worked at the Allegan County Fair for 25 years helping the post. On May 8, 1970 he married Teresa “Terri” Breck who survives. Garry had 4 children, Tracie Parrish of Wayland, Garry Parrish Jr. of Plainwell, Chad (Kathy) Parrish of Plainwell and Michelle (Jim) Murphy of Plainwell who all survive. Garry had 5 grandsons, Anthony and Kevin Parrish both of Tennessee, Austin Parrish of Otsego and Mike and Jared Murphy of Plainwell who all survive. Also surviving are his siblings, Bob (Nancy) Parrish and Jack (Judy) Parrish; sisters-in-law, Barb Parrish and Jackie Parrish; brothers–in-law, Jim Ellinger and Jerry (Diana) Clason and his dog, Kaley who was his baby girl. He was preceded in death by his parents, motherin–law, father-in-law and siblings, Jean Ellinger, Jim Parrish and Larry Parrish. His life’s journey carried him back to God’s side and he had a desire to learn so much more. He spent several years at the First Baptist Church of Otsego. Garry loved spending time with his brothers having coffee and sharing stories. He also loved spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandsons. Funeral services were held November 29, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Don Boss officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Township. Gayle passed away Monday, November 26, 2018 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born on July 8, 1947 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Leon and Patricia (Volker) Mol. Gayle had worked at Parker Hannifin and most recently at Perrigo for 15 years until her retirement. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul food pantry and Hospice. Gayle like horses and taking care of the people she loved. Surviving are her sons, Brad Henry of Otsego and Mike Henry of Plainwell; 3 grandchildren, Seth Henry, Brian Henry and Matthew Henry; great-granddaughter, Kaidence; several nieces, nephews and cousins and special cousin, Ned Volker. She was preceded in death by her parents. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. This position is located at the Wayland school district transportation garage, but spends and serves time in the local school district garages we support through-out Allegan County. This position has the responsibility to assist in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of school bus vehicles and accessory equipment, through regular scheduled preventative maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, and performing repairs within the qualification levels in accordance with legislation, regulations and standards. Desired qualifications; two-year fleet diesel technician certification from an accredited college or technical school or equivalent; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience; possess or able to obtain a valid CDL (with a P&S Endorsements and State of MI Bus Certification) and the ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test. This position comes with an excellent benefit package; Health/Vision/Dental insurance, paid time off, a pension program and desirable work schedule. Compensation will be based on qualifications.
