The Gift of Hope

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light …” – Isaiah 9:2

Christmas comes each year to remind us there is such a thing as hope. The good news is that all the darkness of the world can never put out the light of Christ.

God called Isaiah to be a prophet of hope: • He pointed to the time when Messiah (“anointed one”) would come to deliver His people from the darkness of sin.

• His prophecy was perfectly fulfilled some 700 years later when hope was born in Bethlehem (Luke 2:6,7) • “The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world” (John l: 9).

The world is a better place because of the gift of hope: • Isaiah gave the hope for salvation; • Abraham Lincoln gave the hope for freedom; • Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the hope for civil rights.

• Mother Teresa gave hope to the hopeless.

• Nelson Mandela gave the hope for peace.

Good news! All of us, regardless of status or privilege, can be light for someone’s darkness.

Obituaries Alice A. GILBERT

AGE 91 – PLAINWELL, MI

Alice passed away December 6, 2013 surrounded by her family at Wings Home in Allegan. Alice was born April 29, 1922 in Clark County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Artus and Mary (Cooper) Channells. On December 28, 1940 she married Edward Gilbert in Wauson, Ohio. Alice was employed at McPherson Dry Cleaners in Plainwell for several years and for over 20 years at Kal-Equip before her retirement. She had spent many summers at Sandy Pines and following retirement she and Ed spent several years in Florida.

In her leisure time she enjoyed crocheting, bowling and square dancing. Surviving are her children, Ginny (Ed) Witherell of Plainwell, Sandra (Tony) LoPresto of Martin and Charles (Lou) Gilbert of Otsego; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; and siblings, Virginia Lanz, Cecil Channells, and Barbara Black. Cremation has taken place.

A Memorial Mass was held Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Otsego. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date. Contributions in memory of Alice may be made to Wings Home or Wings of Hope Hospice.

Ruth E. VAN LINDER AGE 89 – OTSEGO

Ruth passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013 in Watervliet. She was born November 10, 1924 in Amherst, Nebraska to John and Katie (Smith) Oertwig. In 1944 she married Ronald VanLinder and spent 51 years together until his passing in 1995. Ruth enjoyed raising and spending time with her children, reading, taking walks, and her many flower gardens. Surviving are her children, Connie VanLinder of Plainwell, Michael VanLinder of Bonita Springs, Florida, Patricia (Galen) Blough of Watervliet, and Dennis VanLinder of St. Petersburg, Florida; seven grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; one greatgreat-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; and her siblings, OraMae Young, Naomi McCullough, Richard Oertwig, Deloris Alexander, Walter Oertwig, Bernice Wolfkill, Doris Walters, John Oertwig, Raymond Oertwig, Orville Oertwig, and Juanita McAninch.

Cremation has taken place and no public services are scheduled. Burial of ashes will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date. Those desiring may make memorial contributions in honor of Ruth to the American Cancer Society.
