FALLING LEAVES

Present a Beautiful Safety Hazard Watching leaves turn brilliant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful displays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country. While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Understanding certain inconveniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves.

Clogging Leaves that fall can become trapped in air intake vents, eventually impeding flow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the windshield wipers should be removed. Use a high-powered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting. Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear exhaust pipe. Slippery surfaces

Staining Leaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicle’s paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extended period of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint. It’s important to manually pick leaves off of the car’s surface right after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle. Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or automotive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time.

The Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the surface of roadways can be hazardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Drivers should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off-ramps more carefully. Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fill potholes, giving the false impression that a road is smooth and causing damage to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them. Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they can complicate driving and fall car care. Motorists should keep their cars clear of leaves and use caution on roadways.

Autumn and driving seem to be tailor-made for one another, and they can be if motorists exercise caution when driving near fallen leaves.

Welcomes New Manager, Josh Owens I have always called West Michigan my home. I grew up in Battle Creek and then moved to Kalamazoo where I attended and graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Public Policy. While attending WMU I started volunteering as a board member for a small non-profit organization named Thrive: A Refugee Support Program in Grand Rapids. After graduating from WMU I started attending Grand Valley State University in pursuit of a Master of Public Administration degree in Urban and Regional Development. A few years ago I moved to the Plainwell/Richland area where I currently live with my beautiful wife Raquel, our two crazy boys and a lazy Great Dane. My family and I are very happy and excited to start this new chapter of our lives here in Otsego. I feel very fortunate to be able to be a new part of such a well-run organization and a wonderful community.

OBITUARY Jerry Grauman of Kalamazoo (formerly of Statesville, NC) passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in Kalamazoo. Jerry was born June 27, 1943 in Kalamazoo to Clarence and Bernice (Punches) Grauman. He was a graduate of Plainwell High School and Western Michigan University. Jerry worked for Eaton Corporation for 32 years. He had only recently moved back to the area. Not one to sit still, he kept himself busy in retirement working at a local pizza joint; sewing boat covers for a business he ran out of his garage; fishing and playing cards and taking care of Shopcat. He was a great story teller. Surviving are 3 children, Kammie, Marcie and Karl; a step-daughter Jennifer; his grandchildren, Dylan, Micah, Caleb, Christian, Ashley, Kristopher and Jessica; his great-granddaughter, Avery; his sister Mary Howe and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Brenda Powers. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Visitation was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 with an opening prayer by Pastor Joe Shaler. In a recent interview in his room at Parkview Pines, Gerald showed his still patriotic heart. He spontaneously offered up a verse of God bless America. Summing up his WWII service, Gerald stated, “I tried to do my part.” Gerald Barber – a shining example of the millions who’ve served in uniform to protect the freedoms we cherish in America.

For the next 3 years Barber was part of a Signal Corp. platoon that operated a radar station scanning the vast Pacific seeking to identify incoming Japanese war planes. Japanese aircraft regularly flew south to attack Guadalcanal and American land and naval forces in the area. Radar was, at that time, new technology but worked well enough to alert Barber’s unit to an impending attack. Barber’s unit would then alert Marine air bases to launch planes to intercept the enemy and, no doubt, save American ships and troops. For his efforts Gerald received several Army commendation medals. Upon return to the U.S. after nearly 3 years’ service in a combat theatre, Gerald was advised that he now needed to take basic training, which he emphatically declined and was then honorably discharged to resume civilian life.

Sunday afternoon Dec. 07,1941, 21 year old Plainwell resident Gerald Barber was working with a friend installing a car radio, when an announcement came over the radio that Japanese carrier based planes had attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise attack was a devastating blow to American military forces. The next day President Roosevelt addressed Congress and the nation to declare war on the Axis powers. Within days Gerald Barber was inducted into the U.S. Army and shortly thereafter, without basic training, found himself sailing toward the Southern Pacific island of Guadalcanal which U.S. Marines had recently retaken from Japanese forces. It was his first trip outside the American Midwest.
