“ETERNAL INVESTMENTS”

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” ~Matthew 6:19-20

Jesus invites us to store up treasures in heaven.

This is not a commandment against investing in the stock market, insurance policies, CDs, savings accounts, etc. To the contrary, providing for the material needs of our family upon our death is good stewardship. Then, what did Jesus mean by storing up treasures in heaven?

The message of Jesus runs counter-culture. For example, we live with the myth that the secret of success is having lots of money and material possessions. By this definition, Jesus would be considered the least successful person who ever lived on this earth. He never earned a degree. He never drew a salary. He never owned a home.

The only status He had was a cross upon which He died for our sins. The thing Jesus is warning us against is placing value on things that are temporary. The things of earth can be eaten by moths, destroyed by rust or, God forbid, be taken from us without a moment’s notice.

We have all heard the saying, “You can’t take it with you.” A bumper sticker put this in the form of a question: “Have you ever seen a hearse pulling a trailer?” The message is clear, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on earth ... “ (Colossians 3:2).

Over the years I have conducted more than one thousand funerals. Most of them were stories of faith, love and service. I recall one service of a gentleman who was known only to God. There was no record of name. He left no family. He left nothing. Not even enough to cover his burial expenses. The only persons at the graveside were two undertakers and myself. I read from Psalm 139: l “O Lord, you have searched me and known me.”

When believers reach heaven, we are not going to be asked the size of our bank accounts or whether we made Forbes Billionaires List. We will be asked how we lived our lives on earth. Did we love God with all of our heart, mind and soul? Did we show deeds of love and kindness? Did we, by our example, lead another to Christ? Did we have a positive impact on lives? This is what Jesus meant by laying up for ourselves treasures in heaven. These are the kind of investments that bring the best returns both here and in eternity.

Jesus added, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

What do you treasure most? Are you making eternal investments?

Prayer: Dear Lord, knowing You is the greatest treasure of all. In Your strong name. Amen.

Psalm 107:1-3 All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.

Matthew 23:12 REFLECTION: It is obvious that the sin of being arrogant and unwilling to submit to the authority of Christ is very costly. We will either submit to Christ’s love while in this life or submit to him as someone who is dead. Of these two situations who do you think will live in God’s eternal kingdom? Jesus’ intention is to make sure people still understand that the commandments of God are very important. Jesus knew the Scribes and the Pharisees were teaching the Law but not living by them. Why? Because they were all puffed up with pride and importance.

So, Jesus warns them about the disputes they have regarding the Law. Their teaching is confusing, and it creates trouble in the community. The Law is the means in which people are taught how to please God. The truth is how the Law shows us ourselves and how we fall short of what God requires of us. It points out our sins and ungodly behavior. The intent is to drive us to God to seek forgiveness and renewal. The whole Book of Leviticus was written for this purpose, but it was temporary until God sent the Messiah. God’s forgiveness now comes only through his Son Jesus Christ who overcame the Law for us. The Scribes and Pharisee believed they had the authority to teach righteousness and punish the people. Jesus begins to teach the people about God’s love, and they have a major problem with him. They ask Him, “are you greater than Moses?” Jesus knows their true character. Matthew 15:7 (NLT) “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” They did not submit to the authority, nor the love of God, because they have no love for Christ.

PRAYER TIME: Heavenly Father I pray that I can show the face of Jesus to others and not my pride and arrogance. Lord God, please help me to have the mind of Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Mary Ellen WOODSTOCK Formerly of Otsego & Plainwell

Mary Ellen Fergusson Woodstock passed away Friday September 8, 2023, in the loving arms of her family.

Mary Ellen was born October 23, 1925, to John and Olive Sornbury of Otsego, where she spent 94 happy years as a loved resident of the Otsego and Plainwell communities with family and friends who supported her throughout her life. Mary Ellen spent the last 3 years of her life living near her family in Northern California.

Mary Ellen is survived by her daughter Laura (Kevin) Riddell, daughter in law Linda Fergusson, grandchildren Wendy (Sandy) White, Krista White, Tara (Jason) Sweet, Ryan (Alicia) Sweet, Heather (David) Fergusson Lincoln, and Mike Fergusson Jr., step grandchildren Tristan (Mary Cile) Riddell, Keath (Mary) Riddell, Shannon (Megan) Riddell, Jennifer Starbuck-VanVoorst, Denny Starbuck, Allison Starbuck, and her unofficially adopted family members; Will (Patsy) Kline and Karin (Nick) Breedveld. She is also survived by many great, and great great, grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews who she loved dearly.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by Bob (Robert D) Fergusson, her husband of 50 years and Charles Woodstock, her husband of 12 years. She was also preceded in death by her children, Karen Sue Fergusson, Robert “Steve” Fergusson, and Michael John Fergusson Sr., and her special “sisters” Bella DuBois and Joyce Mills. Mary Ellen retired from Allegan General Hospital; she worked at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. She worked as a volunteer at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was a member of the Church of God in Otsego and Faith Chapel in Kalamazoo prior to her move to California. Beyond the love of her family and friends, Mary Ellen loved ice cream, reading, gardening, road trips, sunbathing, fashion, coffee with friends, Michigan sports, and the Monterey Bay. Mary Ellen wished to express her affection and gratitude to the staff of Landmark Villa in Hayward, California for their loving care and support during this year. Consistent with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends and family will gather at 2pm on Friday, November 10, 2023 for burial of ashes at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Mary Ellen may be made to Kalamazoo Animal Rescue, 4669 Executive Dr. Portage MI 49002.

Leroy Charles "Dooley" JOHNSON, II AGE 63 - MARTIN, MI

Leroy Charles "Dooley" Johnson ll, age 63, passed away October 22, 2023 in his home in Martin, MI. He was born December 11, 1959 in Terre Haute, IN to Janice and Leroy Johnson. Leroy later moved to Otsego, MI, where he attended Otsego High School.

He worked at Marshall Plastic, where he met his soon-to-be wife. Leroy married his best friend, Susanna Shook, on June 17, 1978. Together for 45 years, they raised two daughters, Lacey (Troy) Simpson of Plainwell and Frankie (Kevin) McConnaughey of Martin and have six grandchildren: Logen Demink, Landen, Gunner, Tucker, Gideon Sims, and Teagen Simpson. Leroy loved the title of Papa and was always doing something with his grandkids. From toodling around on the golf cart to showing off the motorcycle, Leroy always had his dog or grandkid by his side. Those lucky enough to know Leroy say that once you met him, you instantly became his friend. He was so selfless, dropping what he was doing to come and help. In recent years, Leroy had been struggling with his health, but it had taken a downturn in recent months. His family was so hopeful he would see relief, but the pain grew to be too much for Leroy. His family takes comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain and is at peace.

Leroy is survived by his wife Sue, their children and grandchildren, his sisters: Robin (Steve) Folk, Dawn Raulston, Sherry (Dave) Meyer, Becky (Mike) Staley, Rena (Kenny) Burk, and Lorrie Johnson; brother, Bobby Johnson; brother-in-law, John Raulston; sister-in-law, Gloria (Alice) Shook; brothers-in-law, Tom (Meg) Shook, Max Shook, and John (Lori) Shook; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, Janice and Leroy, and step-father, Richard Dooley; brother, Richie Dooley; sister, Barbie Hamilton; sister-in-law, Peggy Shook; father-in-law, Frank Shook, mother-in-law, Georgia Shook; and his dog Cookie.

Patricia Lynn Bowlby, known to her loved ones as Pat, passed away on October 24, 2023, at the age of 72 in Plainwell, MI. Pat was born on June 17,1951, in Kalamazoo. To know Pat was to love her. She had a feisty and vibrant personality that brought joy to everyone around her. Her spunk and sarcasm always brought a smile to people's faces, making the world a better place. Patricia is survived by her loving family, including her son, Greg Bowlby, bonus son Zachary Flora, grandson Christian Bowlby, her siblings Vern Bowlby, Nancy Salin (Fred), Rick Root (Mary Lou), Bonnie Bair (Richard), Robin Flora (Ed), and sister-in-law Velma Bowlby. She was preceded in death by her father, Stan Bowlby, her mother, Jean Bowlby, and her brother Bob Bowlby. After graduating from Plainwell High School, Pat worked at Parker Hannifin in Otsego. It was from there that she retired. Pat served on the Plainwell Chamber of Commerce and recently held the position of President of the Resident Council at Life Care. A gathering to celebrate Pat's life will be held on November 5 from 2-5pm at 27335 22nd Ave., Gobles, MI, the home of her sister. Friends and family are invited to attend and share their memories of Pat during this time of remembrance. Patricia Lynn Bowlby will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. AGE 89 - PLAINWELL, MI Gordon passed away, Monday, October 30, 2023, at his home in Plainwell, surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 12, 1934 in Comstock, the son of Gerald and Adelaide (Janke) Rantz. Gordon proudly served his country in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. For many years Gordon worked around the clock as the owner and operator of Timber Ridge Ski Area. He loved spending his days and usually his nights doing whatever needed to be done to make things run smoothly. Although he loved to work, Gordon was happiest when spending his down time surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On New Year’s Day in 1956 at the Plainwell Methodist Church he married Mary Jane Robinson who survives. Also surviving are his children, David (Linda) Rantz and Amy (Luke) Schrab; 5 grandchildren, Megan (Jeff) Gose, Stephanie (Kyle) Koster, Jill (David) Jackson, Lauren Fuller and Alyssa Fuller; 6 great-grandchildren with another due soon; brother, Roger (Joanne) Rantz along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Gene, Charlotte and Delores. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held in the spring. Contributions in memory of Gordon may be made to Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.

Alvin E. SWEET AGE 80 - OTESGO, MI

Alvin passed away, Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at the Wings Home in Allegan. He was born October 14, 1943 in Wyandotte, MI, the son of Clarence and Alice (Prolo) Sweet. Alvin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army 1963-1966 where he was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Alvin also served in the Army National Guard, Holland post and after ten years of service he retired with a Sergeant First Class rank. For 35 years he was a custodian for the Otsego Public Schools until his retirement in 2005. Alvin loved riding his bike around town and his goal was to bike 1000 miles every summer. He also enjoyed photography, woodworking and collecting coins. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. On September 30, 1966 in Otsego, he married Nada Nilsen who passed away in 2016. Surviving are his children, LaRayne Sweet, Genni (Tom) Plyley, Beth (Bob) Randall and John Alvin Dennis Sweet; grandchildren, Patricia (Brandon) McNees, Ryan Goodacre, Tamara Goodacre, Adam Sweet, Devon Plyley, Jenna Collins, Amanda Lawrence, Jordan Kellerman, Dana Plyley, Alexis Schmitt, Xander Sweet and Zane Sweet; 23 greatgrandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Wanita (Richard) Johnson and Norman Sweet and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter-in-law, Danelle Sweet; son-in-law, Harry W. Try and brothers, Edwin Sweet and Charles Sweet. Friends may visit with Alvin’s family from 2:00-5:00 PM, Sunday, November 5, 2023 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 6, 2023 with Pastor Maggie Stoken officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Alvin may be made to the Otsego VFW Post #3030.

Ruth Ann MYERS AGE 82 - PLAINWELL, MI

Ruth Ann passed away, Friday, October 27, 2023 at Briarwood Assisted Living in Allegan. She was born February 25, 1941 in Lowell the daughter of Earl and Marion (Burch) Kinyon. Ruth Ann worked at several area businesses over the years including Heckman’s, Plainwell Lanes, KalEquip and retired from Bronson Hospital. Ruth Ann’s favorite and best job was raising her 4 sons. Ruth Ann was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed cooking, knitting and crocheting. She liked doing puzzles and word searches, playing cards and loved to sing. Ruth Ann was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge where she enjoyed camping with her husband. In November 1962 she married Eugene Myers who passed away in 2019. Surviving are her sons, Marty (Becky) Myers of Plainwell, Jeffrey (Andrea) Myers of Byron Center, Gregg (Cheri) Myers of Plainwell and Gene (Stephanie) Myers of Plainwell; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren with another on the way along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers and a sister. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service was held November 2, 2023 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Burial of ashes will take place at Trowbridge Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Ruth Ann may be made to Centrica Care Navigators.
