What to Expect Across the State From the 2018 MICHIGAN DEER HUNTING PROSPECTS Report www.mi.gov/dnr

The 2017 season, while seeing a significant drop in hunter numbers, ended up with a significant increase in harvest from 2016. Overall hunting success increased across most of the state in 2017 with nearly 50 percent of hunters harvesting a deer.

The winter of 2017 was average across the entire state.

Despite the snowfall and temperatures being normal it appears that deer came through the winter in good to excellent condition. Spring had relatively mild weather as well which is a major factor in both deer fitness and fawn survival. Due to these circumstances, this year has seen an increase in both the overall number of fawns and deer seen.

With the favorable conditions throughout the winter, spring, and summer, there is an opportunity for hunters to experience increased success rates in 2018 from last year. Though, this forecast may help to get you started with what to look for there is no substitute for scouting.

The opportunity to find out which trees are producing fruit and mast, what deer trails are being utilized and what activity patterns deer are following this year is priceless information for a deer hunter before they go out hunting. So, whether your goal is to get meat in the freezer, go for a wall hanger or simply get outdoors, Michigan’s deer seasons offer something for everyone.

Lewis Carroll was a famous English writer who wrote children’s fiction stories, including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Lewis Carroll also wrote another fascinating, yet lesser known story about a padlock.

It was an ordinary padlock, but alive! It had long, thin arms and legs … and was always very nervous, running here, there and yon … and it always had an anxious look on its face.

One day someone stopped the twisting, turning, wiggling padlock and asked, “What in the world is the matter with you? Why are you so excited, desperate and unhappy?” Waving his thin arms wildly in the air, the padlock shouted, “I am seeking the key to unlock myself!”

For believers, Jesus Christ is the key that unlocks our true identity. Our Lord Himself discovered His identity at the age of twelve (Luke 2:49). Jesus has promised the same to all believers. Larry passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at his home in Otsego. Larry and his twin brother Garry were born June 8, 1946 in Plainwell to James and Naomi (Punches) Parrish. He was a 1964 Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He began working at Harding’s Market in 1962 and continued there for more than 47 years until his retirement in 2009. In his free time Larry enjoyed attending races, spending time with his friends and family and going to his grandchildren’s events. Larry joined First Baptist Church of Otsego in 1969 and was an active member on the church board, Sunday school and Awana teacher and with the bus ministry. On June 10, 1967 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego he married Jacqueline Stuck who survives. Also surviving are his children, Wendy (Jim) Gauthier of Plainwell, Larry Jr. (Wendy) Parrish of Roswell, NM and Jay (Shannon) Parrish of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Jordan Parrish of NM, Karlee and Tyler Gauthier of Plainwell and Jayce Parrish of NC; siblings, Bob (Nancy) Parrish, Jack (Judy) Parrish and his twin brother, Garry (Terri) Parrish; brother-in-law, Jim Ellinger and sister-inlaw, Barb Parrish and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-inlaw and siblings, Jean Ellinger and Jim Parrish. Friends may meet with Larry’s family from 6-8 P.M., Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Otsego with Pastor Paul Laborde officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post #3030. Mark passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at his home in Otsego due to complications of heart failure.

He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 19, 1953 in Plainwell the son of Elwin and Virginia (Campbell) Bronson. For 27 years Mark had worked as Deputy Sheriff for the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office. While on the force he also worked as a field training officer, as a detective and at KVCC Police Academy as a driving instructor. Mark was a member of the FOP, was named police office of the year and competed in the World Police and Fire Games. He had been a president and vice president of the Escapes Chapter 6 RV Club. He had been a member of the Kalamazoo Valley Antique Engine and Machine Club, the South Kent Sportsman Club and the United Methodist Church of Otsego.

Mark had written Buffy’s Byline for the Union Enterprise for many years. He loved woodworking, duck hunting, fishing with his grandchildren, shooting, working on tractors with his grandson Tyler, attending tractor shows, cooking, traveling and taking trips up north. Mark had an infectious laugh and loved his family and friends. One of the many highlights of the past year was being able to celebrate his 65th birthday with over 300 of his family and friends. On December 3, 1971 at Trowbridge Methodist Church he married Sherri Keim, his wife of 46 years, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Joseph (Kecia) Bronson of Otsego and Sarah (Chris) Lake of Maryland; grandchildren, Tyler, Travis, Lauren, Alie and Parker; he was a beloved brother to Michael (Judy) Bronson and Mary (Randy) Lober; sister-in-law, Jeanie Volker; brother-in-law, Mark Keim; many nieces and nephews; special cousins and dear family friend, Dale Minegar. He was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Lorie Volker. According to his wishes cremation has taken place.

Burial of ashes will take place at Trowbridge Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Mark may be made to the Otsego Public Schools Foundation for the Lorie Volker Honey Badger Scholarship, Otsego United Methodist Church or to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Greg A. MARTIN AGE 63 - OTSEGO, MI

Greg passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 30, 2018 surrounded by his family at Borgess-Pipp Hospital in Plainwell. Greg and his family embraced the journey and he is now with his Lord and Savior. He was born May 25, 1955 in Kalamazoo the son of Donald and Joan (Utt) Martin. Greg graduated in 1974 from Waterville High School in Maine.

For many years he had worked at Parker Hannifin in Otsego. Greg loved music and enjoyed singing. Greg also enjoyed tinkering with electronics, going to garage sales, looking for antiques, camping and Lionel model trains. Greg attended the Resurgence Church of Otsego and also liked attending bible study and fellowship at the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Allegan and Gobles. On May 6, 1978 at the Presbyterian Church in Plainwell he married Janet VanDenBerg who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jenny (Devin) Woelzlein and Andrew (Brandi) Martin both of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Callen, Damen and Exander and Jackson; brothers, Garry, Randy and Rob (Michelle); sisters-in-law, Betty Hotchkiss and Judy VanDenBerg along with many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Joan Martin and brothers-in-law, Ron Hotchkiss and Paul VanDenBerg. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Friday, November 2 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Leigh Larson and Pastor Alex Rybachek officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Greg may be made to the American Heart Association.

AGE 73 - SHELBYVILLE, MI Larry went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at his home in Shelbyville. He was born November 23, 1944 in Kalamazoo the son of Ernie and Nora (Dowell) Guess. Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He had worked for many years at Plainwell Paper until his retirement in 2000. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with Bubby and Maybelle, fishing, listening to music, attending football and baseball games, spending time outdoors, tending his flowers and mowing his yard. Larry was a member of the American Legion Post 84 in Otsego and had enjoyed spending the last 20 winters in FL with his wife. On June 9, 1990 he married Myrtle Sparks who survives. Also surviving are his children, Deanna Sonnerville, Laura Witherspoon, Dawn Forsmann, Brian Guess, Kimberly Noble, Matt Noble, Della Hilts, Christina Thompson and Shelly Belka; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Betty Guess, Ernest, Jerry and Bob Guess; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Shirley Caswell and wife, Cora Guess. Friends may visit with Larry’s family starting at 12:00 P.M., Monday, November 5, 2018 at the Pentecostal Church of Christ in Orangeville, until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 P.M., with Pastor Mike Risner officiating.
