What to Expect Across the State From the 2019 MICHIGAN DEER HUNTING PROSPECTS Report www.mi.gov/dnr The 2019 deer season is fast approaching! DNR biologists have been out, observing the deer herds in their areas and looking at the food sources which will sustain deer this fall. Based on their observations, what follows is the forecast for the upcoming hunting season. Deer Hunting Forecast
Upper Peninsula (UP) Overall, the winter of 2018-2019 was average for the UP. Locally, some communities saw record-breaking snow levels. Luckily, snow melt occurred quickly and it appears that few deer succumbed to harsh winter conditions. Observations by staff indicate that deer numbers appear similar to last year. Buck sightings have been limited. Those that have been observed look very healthy and antler development appears average for the region.
Northern Lower Peninsula (NLP) It was a mild to average winter for the NLP which allowed deer populations to continue to increase across much of the region. Fawning conditions appear to have been average with observations being similar to last year. Thus far, it appears to be an average year for production of both acorns and wild apples.
Scouting to find these areas will be crucial. Observations of bucks have been similar to last year across the entire NLP. With the average winter this year and previous winters not taking a major toll on the herd, deer numbers have been increasing. Nutrition has been good leading to healthy deer body conditions and good numbers of bucks.
Southern Lower Peninsula (SLP) Winters generally have little impact on deer in the SLP, and this past winter was no exception. Deer numbers appear to be similar or higher than last year, and there seems to be excellent fawn production. The deer are in great shape. Rainfall totals were high for nearly all of Southern Michigan causing many crops to either go in late or not at all. Harvest will undoubtedly be late this year, which may have a direct impact on deer harvest. Thus far it appears to be an average to above average year for production of both acorns and wild apples. Again, scouting to find these areas will be important and we recommend contacting your local DNR office to get staff perspective on the area. High quality forage is rarely an issue in the SLP. Deer, including bucks, are abundant in many areas. Observations coming in show buck numbers and condition are are similar to last year. Bachelor herds are being seen with some nice 2.5 and 3.5-year-old deer in them.

“FALL BACK” -

As most of us know daylight savings time ends on November 3, 2019. In other words, it is time to “Fall Back.” This is also true in the Christian life. There are certain truths believers can always count on, rely upon and depend upon. In other words, there are truths we can all “Fall Back” on. Let’s take a look at three of them.
1. We can fall back on the Promise of God’s Presence.
Shortly before He left this earth, Jesus said, “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Whatever we may be facing, we can know that we never walk alone. When afraid or lonely; confused or disappointed; rejected or not taken seriously; we can know that God is always at our side. We can depend on the dependability of God. God will always be there for us! 2. We can fall back on the Promise of Salvation.
Probably the most quoted verse in the Bible is John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, God gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The good news is that we can have the assurance of salvation. We never have to doubt our salvation (I John 5:11, 12). It is a promise we can always fall back on. 3. We can fall back on the Promise of God’s Wisdom.
None of us is smart enough, wise enough or experienced enough to discover God’s wisdom on our own. We need God’s help.
We begin by acknowledging and trusting God (Proverbs 3:5, 6). In James 1:5 we read, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given you.” Some practical ways of discovering God’s wisdom are: (A) The Bible (Psalm 119:105) (B) Prayer (Jeremiah 29:13) (C) The wise counsel of godly people (Proverbs 19:20) (D) Life circumstances (Romans 8:28). When these four avenues are in agreement, we are well on our way to finding God’s path for our lives. When you re-set your clocks, remember to fall back on the promises of God!

Many people picture a person in tattered clothes, sleeping on a park bench with everything they own in a trash bag. This is not the only narrative. Unfortunately, homelessness is a REAL issue locally. HOMELESSNESS DEFINED: • Not having a fixed and adequate place to sleep. • Moving frequently between different places: couch surfing or relying on relatives or friends for a place to sleep. • Staying in places not meant for human habitation: vehicles, storage units, parks, tents, etc.
Do you know of anyone that fits this criteria? It is more common in our area than many people realize, due to many factors, including the lack of affordable local housing. This month, our goal is to educate the members of our community on what it means to be homeless, what causes it, and how we can help prevent it. Kevin passed away Saturday, October 26, 2019 at his home in Delton. He was born April 21, 1957 in Hastings, the son of Arnold and Ardith (Hartman) Boulter. Kevin was a very talented electrician and was well respected in his industry. His passion was playing drums. Kevin was part of two area bands the Hip Replacements and The Ear Pirates. He also enjoyed riding his Husqvarna motorcycle, oil painting, hunting, going dirt biking and was currently building a pole barn. He was a Master Mason with Lodge 513 in Otsego. Kevin was a connoisseur of life, enjoyed learning and loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. On October 14, 2000 in Allegan he married Robin Stoughton who survives. Also surviving are his children, Brandi Davis, Erick (Julie) Boulter and Samantha (Chris) Smith; 6 grandchildren, Caden, Jasmine, Olivia, Andrew, William and Travis; brother, Kurt Boulter and sisters, Korene (John) Vandenburg and Brenda (Scott) Try. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 31, 2019. Burial took place at Oakhill Cemetery in Orangeville. Karen Robertson went to be with her family and the Lord on October 28, 2019. Karen passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her kids and loved ones. She is remembered by how much she cared and how well she loved. She enjoyed playing Bingo, bowling and just being with the ones she loved. She is preceded in death by her mom Linda (Grover) Rutherford, father, Joe Casarez, her sister, Kelly Rutherford, brother, Little Joe Casarez, and several aunts and uncles. Karen is survived by her sons Jeramy (Heidi) Robertson, and David Robertson, her sisters, Vicky (Rick) Hiemstra, Brenda (Greg) Lamb, and her brothers, David Casarez, Mark (Kelly) Thomas, and Oscar Casarez, Her grandkids, Tayler, KC, Devan as well as many nieces and nephews who she loved deeply. Surviving are her father and step-mother, Richard and Nancy Eggleston and niece, Alexandria Miller. She was preceded in death by her mother, sister, Renee and her grandparents. AGE 89 - OTSEGO, MI Elmer passed away suddenly on Monday, Oct. 28, 2019 at home. He was born on October 8, 1930, the son of Jacob and Anna Evink. Elmer worked for many years at Sears Garage in Kalamazoo, retiring from there. He loved working on tractors of all kinds. Elmer is survived by seven children: Donald (Diane) Evink of Allegan, Anthony (Byllie) Riley of Plainwell, Dean (Amy) Evink of Allegan, Sherri Riley of Gobles, Darlene Riley of Galesburg, Duane Evink and Christy Conway of Holland and Ron (Arlene) Evink of Plainwell. Also, many brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews; 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 greatgreat grandchildren. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Anna Evink, daughter Marlene Dell and many brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 10 at the Otsego Scout House, 410 E. Orleans St., Otsego from 1 p.m to 4:00 p.m.

Larry L. HODGMAN AGE 72 - OTSEGO, MI
Larry passed away Sunday, October 27, 2019 at his home in Otsego. He was born March 30, 1947 in Kalamazoo the son of Mylon and Rachel (Strong) Hodgman. He had worked at Jarvis Pemco for 40 years. Larry was a handyman and enjoyed using his skills to help anyone in need. He also enjoyed repairing small engines, fishing, collecting coins and having coffee with his brother. On June 27, 1970 in Otsego at the First Baptist Church he married Glenda Hall who survives. Also surviving are his son, Josh Patrick of Otsego; grandchildren, Gracie, Lexi and Aaron; siblings, Ron Hodgman of Otsego, Bernie Hodgman of Alabama, Rose (Dan) Keyes of Kalamazoo and Hank “Henry” Hodgman of Allegan; several nieces and nephews and his close friend, Rick Hiemstra. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edward Hodgman, sister, Diane Hodgman and niece, Kelly Hodgman. Friends may visit with Larry’s family from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M., Friday, November 1, 2019 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 2, 2019 with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Larry may be made to Friendship Wesleyan Church.
Betty passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at her home in Otsego. She was born June 7, 1933 in Otsego the daughter of Charles and Beatrice (Beldon) Fuller. Betty was an Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. She had worked at Kal-Equip, Allen Test Products and Stryker. Betty loved driving and shopping. On June 27, 1953 in Otsego she married Max Bonnell who passed away in 2013. Surviving are her sons, Brian (Susan) Bonnell and Terry (Charlene) Bonnell; grandchildren, Dan (Libby) Bonnell, Shaun (Kelli) Bonnell, Heather (Jeff) Kiel, Cody Bonnell, Amy (Mark) Morey and Jeffrey (Meredith) Keith; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Bob (Barb) Fuller and her aunt, Bessie Andress. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Bill Fuller. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 87 - PLAINWELL, MI Betty passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the Wings Home in Allegan. She was born April 2, 1932 in Otsego the daughter of Verle and Mildred (Forsyth) Sheldon. Betty had worked at several area businesses most recently at Parker Hannifin. She also volunteered at Christian Neighbors and many area nursing homes. Betty had a strong faith and was a member of Friendship Wesleyan Church in Plainwell. She loved taking care of her family, sewing and playing cards. In 1950 she married Joseph Edwards who passed away in 1997. On July 2, 2004 she married Archie Woodstock who passed away in 2014. Surviving are her children, Joseph (Becky) Edwards of Gobles, Clifford Edwards of Virginia and Sherri (Dennis) MacEachron of Portage, 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-greatgrandchildren and her siblings, Barb and Richard. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son, David and her 8 siblings. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego at a later time. Betty’ s family would like to thank the 8th floor staff at Borgess Medical Center for the wonderful care that Betty received. Phyllis G.K. COOMBS AGE 96 - KALAMAZOO, MI
Phyllis Gay Kistler Coombs, pictured with her husband, Jack, was born on February 9, 1923 in Grand Rapids to Evelyn and Max Kistler. She died on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 in Grand Rapids, MI at the age of 96. She had one sister, Jeanne Hillyer who died in 2013, and one brother & sister-in-law Bob & Mary Lou Kistler of Sedona, Arizona. She was married to John Mitchell (always known as ‘Jack’) Coombs in 1942 at Kalamazoo College. She would be quick to say like David in the 23rd Psalm (one of her favorites that she often quoted… in fact it was quite amazing at the number of poems or songs she could flawlessly quote!) “…My cup overflows, Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life. “ [Ps. 23:5-6]. Phyllis’ life was marked by kindness towards others and an unflagging devotion to her husband of 72 years. She showed unconditional love for each of her five children (Mike, Bob, Jeanne, Brad & John) as well as their spouses, children and grandchildren. She never sought the limelight, but like her Mom before her, she chose to do her work in the background. She loved to play Bridge and she rose to the highest skill level at that game. She spent many years teaching others the game she treasured. She also played the game of golf quite well and could oftentimes out putt her sons (as well as always out putt her husband). Both she and Jack grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They raised their family there as well as in Plainwell, Michigan. After the kids grew-up, they lived over 20 years in Sedona, Arizona before moving to West Lafayette, Indiana (near Purdue University where Jack and each of his sons attended) in 2006. After Jack’s death, Phyllis lived at West Side Garden Plaza in Indianapolis, Indiana until 2017 at which time she moved ‘back home’ to Michigan to live at the Fountains in Kalamazoo. Preceded in death by her husband Jack in 2014 and her eldest son, Mike in 2015, she is survived by 4 children, 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Visitation is at Winkel Funeral Home from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Saturday, November 2, 2019.
