Floyd Ray “Pee-wee” CASWELL AGE 75 - MARTIN, MI

Floyd Ray Caswell (Pee-wee), age 75 of Martin, MI passed away on November 15, 2023. Ray was born October 28, 1948 to Herbert and Louise Caswell in Monterey, MI. He married his wife, Lorraine (Symonds) Caswell, on August 18, 1968. A few weeks later he went to Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam, he lived in Texas for a year with his bride.

They returned to Michigan where he worked construction. After that, he started at Western Michigan University from which he later retired in 1990. During this time he was also a member of the National Guard, which he remained for many years. Later in his life Ray worked for the Scholten mink farm and the DeYoung pig farm. He truly loved driving the piggy bus. Ray never met a stranger. He loved to talk, loved to have coffee with his friends and loved his grandchildren beyond measure. Ray is survived by his wife of 55 years; children, Randy Caswell, Patty (Chris) Gonser, Jen Caswell; grandchildren, Janessa, Montana, Triston Caswell, Clayton (Kylie) Geerlings, Kylee and Paige Gonser; great-grandchildren, Harlee Caswell and Alaina Geerlings (arriving April 2024); brother, Delbert (Sue) Caswell; brotherin-law, Phillip (Pam) Symonds; sister-in-law, Linda (Bruce) Spence; many nieces and nephews, and his best friend Bob Kitchen. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister, Richard and Darlene Caswell (who lost their lives in a fire when Floyd was a baby), half-brother, Robert Jordon; mother and father-in-law, Kip and May Symonds; and daughterin-law, Chastity Caswell. Please join us to celebrate Floyd's life on November 28, 2023 from 5pm-8pm at the Otsego VFW Post 3030, 124 N. Farmer St, Otsego. Come hungry and ready to share your Peewee stories! When not working Margie enjoyed going to garage sales, spending time with her mom and crafting. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren. Surviving are her daughter, Kayla (Tony) Meyer of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Cora, William and Karrie; step-grandchildren, Brandon, Alexa, T.J. and Hailyn; her mother, Peggy; siblings, Deb (Larry) Pillars, Tammy Syers, Gregory Simpson and Chuck (Amy) Simpson along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, William, brother, Tom Simpson and nephew, Justin Syers. Burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Bob passed away, Sunday, November 19, 2023 in Allegan.

He was born June 3, 1952 in Plainwell the son of Robert and Mertyle (Trimm) Gleason. For 33 years he worked at Rock Tenn Paper Mill as a waste water treatment operator. Bob enjoyed bowling and had been to many national tournaments over the years. He also like hunting, fishing and golfing. On October 8, 1971 in Otsego he married Darlene Minshall who survives. Also surviving are his children, Shawn (Heather) Gleason of Mattawan and Stacy (Chad) Moore of Otsego; 5 grandchildren, Oakley, Sebastian, Cole, Maddison and Mason; sisters, Bonnie Hough, Iona Fain and Jeannette Garr along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew, Michael Huff and brother, Jim Trimm. Burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego.

Lester passed away, Monday, November 20, 2023, in Ionia. He was born April 24, 1943 in Kalamazoo the son of Marion and Ella (Swainston) James. For 30 years Lester worked for General Motors until his retirement in the late 90’s. As a young man he enjoyed square dancing and was a 4-H leader for his children. He also enjoyed camping, traveling, gardening and woodworking. On October 12, 1963 he married Hazel Jean Parker who passed away in 2013. Surviving are his children, Kathy (Kevin) Sparks, Bill (Sally) James, Russ (Sheri) James and Dennis (Jennifer) James; grandchildren, Jackie and Faith Sparks, Christopher and Kaylee James, Eric (Katie), Kyle and Luke James, Aaron Radcliffe, Samantha James and Brendan Horn; great-grandchildren, Violet and Olive James and Lincoln and Raegan Knight; siblings, Norma VanderPloeg, Carol (Dick) Schiedel and Roy (Janet) James; many nieces and nephews and special friend Betty. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Sam VanderPloeg. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Lester’s family starting at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, December 2, 2023 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the memorial service at 11:30 A.M., with Pastor Jason Zimmer officiating.

Burial of ashes will take place at West Cooper Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Lester may be made to Allegan County 4-H.

Mary Janet Hope Zuydwegt born on June 30, 1935, to Alvin and Katherine (Latzo) Hope in Kalamazoo, MI, passed away on November 20, 2023, in Martin, MI. Mary married John Anton Zuydwegt on February 20, 1954, and they had 56 years together before his death in 2010. Together they raised 3 sons, 2 daughters, and numerous foster kids in the Plainwell area. After working at Upjohn in Kalamazoo, Mary and John retired to live in Punta Gorda, FL where they lived many happy years. Mary was a long-time member of the Otsego Moose Lodge.

Mary is survived by John Jr., Henry (Michelle) Zuydwegt and Peggy Sherry of Punta Gorda, FL, and Phillip (Becky) Zuydwegt of Kewadin, MI. Grandchildren Michelle (Greg) Westendorp, Zachary, and Marisa Zuydwegt, Aaron and Adam Nichols, Josh, Heather and Terry Head, Stuart, and Alex Sherry.

Many Great Grandchildren and extended family.

Special friend Louella Wagner. Mary is preceded in death by her Husband John Sr., Daughter Patricia, Daughter-in-law, Charlene, and Grandson John William (Bill) Zuydwegt, Brothers, Alvin (Bud) and Leroy Hope. Celebration of Life will take place in 2024 at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.

Dixie L. CARROLL AGE 89 - OTSEGO, MI

Dixie passed away, Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Kauhale in Otsego. She was born August 25, 1934 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Joe and Eveline (Jones) Wells.

Dixie graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1952. Dixie moved to Oklahoma in 1981 and returned to the area in 2022. She worked at several different businesses over the years including Hoard Chiropractic Clinic, Charles Miller, State Farm Insurance and the Western Michigan University Post Office. Dixie was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed teaching sewing through 4-H. She also liked square dancing with the Rolling Squares, bowling and traveling in her motorhome.

On December 5, 1953 in Kalamazoo she married Merlyn “Doyle” Lehman who passed away in 1965.

She married Larry Herweyer and they spent 10 years together. On November 24, 1995 she married Forest Carroll who passed away in 2022. Surviving are her children, Candace (Gary) Dunham of Otsego, Rodney (Nittaya) Lehman of Otsego and Karen (Steward) Klaus of Mancelona; step-daughters, Michele (Modesto) Santellan and Laura (Darrell) Couts; 8 grandchildren, Shannon (Scott) Goodwin, Sheilah (Jeremy) Springston, Keith (Wendy) Dunham, Samantha (Michael) Hamilton, Myles Lehman, Kaon Lehman, Morgan Goff and Bynum Goff and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Merlyn and Forrest and by her sisters, Betty and Bonnie Wells. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with Dixie’s family from 12-3 PM, Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at the home of her daughter, Candy Dunham, 1711 Oak St., Otsego. Burial of ashes will be held at Mt. Larry BEVINS

AGE 67 - PLAINWELL, MI Larry passed away Friday, November 17, 2023 at the Wings Home in Allegan. He was born August 15, 1956 in Paintsville, Kentucky the son of John and Louise (Salyers) Bevins. Larry was an electronics technician for Borisch Technologies until his retirement in 2011. Larry loved music especially the Blues. He was a dedicated member of the Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association.

About 30 years ago the newly formed Association decided to have a blues festival in downtown Kalamazoo. The weather was not kind and the event lost money. Those that planned it were discouraged.

Someone stepped up with a plan and that person was Larry. His plan included recruiting sponsors and holding fundraisers. In 1996 another festival was planned and Larry who was not on the board at the time, was elected the new President to lead the effort. Not only did the plan work, in 2001 Larry traveled to Memphis to accept the Blues Organization of the year award. The Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce made July Blues month. Larry and the volunteer board had put Kalamazoo on the Blues map. A book was published in 1999 called “Blues for Dummies.” The authors were mostly Chicago based.

A list was given of the top 10 Blues Festivals not to miss and among them was the Kalamazoo Blues Festival. It was always Larry’s vision to get national recognition. This year the KVBA is planning its 30th Blues Festival. For those now doing the booking the major agencies are on speed dial. That’s all because of Larry Bevins who refused to let it die and dreamed of something bigger. But Blues wasn’t his only love.

The man could barbeque some ribs. He actually entered the annual rib competition with a few other KVBA members and took 2nd place at RibFest.

Music, bbq and family were what Larry was all about.

He will be greatly missed in the Blues world and beyond. On September 16, 1989 he married Lorie Hodges who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, L. Katie Bevins, brother, Jim (Sharon) Bevins, brother-in-law, Edward Hodges and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Bevins II. Friends met with Larry’s family Tuesday, November 21 and Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A funeral service followed with Pastor Dave Alderman officiating. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery at a later time.

Lori L. KENNEDY-LAMBERTY

AGE 64 - PLAINWELL, MI Lori passed away at Bronson Methodist Hospital on Friday, November 10, 2023. Lori was born in Plainwell, Michigan on April 7, 1959, the daughter of John Martin, Jr. and Sharon Lee (Sibbersen) Kennedy. She graduated from Otsego High School and earned her BSN from Western Michigan University. Lori obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from Case Western and her Certified Nurse Midwife and Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Frontier School of Nursing. She worked most of her nursing career at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Lori enjoyed sewing, embroidery, quilting, stained glass and photography. She also thoroughly enjoyed spending time at her home in Puerto Rico, reading under the palm trees and collecting sea glass at the beach. Lori loved her family and friends fiercely. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. On September 23, 2001, she married Jaime Lamberty who survives. She is also survived by her children, Melissa (Jason) Walters, Heather (Christopher) Koziara, Joseph (Jennifer) Bos and Joshua Bos; step-children, Jaime and Marisa Lamberty; grandchildren, Jacob, Maxton, Emiliana, Adelaide, Oliver, Izabela, Sullivan, Silas, Sofia and Marcos; parents, John and Beth (Sullivan) Kennedy; brother, John Kennedy III; sister, Kelly (Brian) McFanin and several nieces and nephews. Lori was preceded in death by her mother, Sharon Kennedy. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Joldersma & Klein Funeral Home on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM. A time of visitation will take place at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be given to the Bronson Health Foundation.

Christ is the image of the invisible God. When Christ speaks, He is God in the flesh communicating to us. Christ is a faultless representation of God’s eternal power for all humanity to comprehend and accept. He offers peace out of chaos, and grace in the face of intense passion.

War in the Middle East, terrorism both global and domestic, natural disasters - hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, hate, nations rising against nations.

In his writings, Apostle Paul added, “some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons” (I Timothy 4:1-3), “people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy (2 Timothy 3:2), heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good (2 Timothy 3:3).

What are we to make of these things? The disciples asked Jesus the same question (Matthew 24:3). Every generation has wondered, “Are we living in the last days?” The central truth is to be ready for the coming of Jesus. Jesus said, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Matthew 24:36). His coming will be sudden, unexpected and glorious. Good news!

Jesus is coming again! The real question: Will we be ready? (Matthew 24:44).

Here are just some assurances of Jesus: BE CAREFUL “At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ … do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and deceive even the elect… (Matthew 24:23, 24).

BE A BELIEVER “For God so loved the world God gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16) BE FAITHFUL “… he who stands firm to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13).

BE HOPEFUL “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me … I will come back and take you to be with me that you also will be where I am” (John 14:1-3).

Prayer: “Dear Lord, help us to be ready for Your coming. In Your strong name Amen.

Maybe...you shouldn't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile.

He was skinny when he arrived and struggled to put on weight due to the stressful shelter environment.

Fortunately, one of Wishbone’s amazing fosters stepped up to help sweet Heath. Now he’s awaiting adoption in a home where he has a foster brother to play with! His first day “home” they spent at least an hour running around the yard playing. He’s also respectful of his foster siblings that aren’t interested in playing. Heath is just over 1 year old and still searching for his adoptive family. That could include other dogs (he would LOVE a playmate!) and/or older, respectful kids.
