Plowing is requested for when there are 3 inches of snow or more. Please note price for plowing and salting separately in bid.

Also accepting bids for sidewalk shoveling: Shovel back staff walkway and areas in the front not plowed out by our snowplows (sidewalks out to the lot and front entry area). Fall Leaf Pick Up 2016 REMINDER OF PICK UP PROCEDURES

The Public Works Department will be picking up leaves between October 24, 2016, and November 11, 2016.

Please do not place any leaves in the streets, before October 22, 2016. Leaves will be picked up twice during the three week period. Please plan accordingly.

Allegan Street residents only- continue to place leaves in the curb lawn. Please do not place leaves near trees or poles, for easier access. Collection dates will be Monday, October 24, 2016, and November 7, 2016 for Allegan Street only.

Farmer Street residents only - collection dates will be Monday, October 24, 2016, and November 7, 2016.

Please rake leaves into the street no earlier than the Sunday before pick up. Please refrain from putting leaves in the road before October 22nd.

Loose leaves will no longer be picked up after your street has been picked-up TWICE. For safety purposes - do not place leaves in the street after the second pick up.

Leaves may be taken to the city's transfer station located off of Helen Ave. free of charge. The transfer station is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

AGE 95 - MARTIN, MI Carl passed away on October 4, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center surround by family. Carl was born on May 21, 1921 to Carl Sr. & Elizabeth Levett. Carl’s family includes his life partner of 25 years, Frances “Fran” Hendrick; his children: Gregory (Barbara) Levett, Bev (Susan Wegner) Levett, Pam Gwilliams and Roland (Tish) Levett; 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline “Polly” and his son Gary Levett. Carl served his country proudly in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Carl was an avid golf who got his hole in one at age 79. A memorial gathering and mass will be held on Saturday, October 8th, at 11:00am at St. Margaret’s Church; 766 S. Farmer St. Otsego, MI (694-6311). Memorial donations can be made to the Martin Area Veterans through the funeral home.

John passed away suddenly at home Tuesday, September 27, 2016.

John was born September 16, 1960 to Dean and Ruth Miller Craner.

John enjoyed drag racing, hunting mushrooms and ice fishing. Surviving are his significant other, Marilyn Matthiex; brothers Rick (Linda) Craner, Tom (Carol) Craner and Mike (Nancy) Craner. He was the best uncle to Brooke and Nolan. John was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no service.

AGE 93 - PLAINWELL, MI Lewis passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016 at Life Care Center of Plainwell. The son of Orrin & Bessie (Chapman) Kelsey, he was born on March 24, 1923 in Reed City. Lewis was a decorated combat veteran honorably serving in the United States Air Corps. Lewis was preceded in death by his loving wife, Arlene and son David, He is survived by his sons Chris (Lynne) Kelsey, Brian Kelsey, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lew was a proud member of the American Legion, VFW and First Presbyterian Church.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, October 16th at 2:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church 303 East Bridge Street Plainwell, MI 49080

Loydeen was born December 20th,1951 to Lloyd Dow Anderson (Doc) and Hazel Marie (Roberts) Anderson.

She passed away at age 64 on September 30th at Life Care in Plainwell, MI. She loved being with her family but she was a very private person and liked her own space. She liked doing crossword puzzles and she loved living in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Surviving are daughter Deena (Elmer Jr) Holly of North Carolina, 4 sisters & 2 brothers: Elaine Prolo, Karen Snyder, Sandy Anderson, Denise Tucker, James (Jim) (Zena) Anderson & Lloyd (Pete) (Jerrilyn) Anderson and 7 Grandkids and & 7 Great grandkids, many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother & father and brother in law Ron Snyder.

Robert Lee BENNETT AGE 89 – PAW PAW, MI

Robert passed away September 28, 2016.

He was born January 31, 1927, in Otsego, to the late Grant and Lucie (Rust) Bennett. Robert is survived by his wife, Thelma (Strickland) Bennett, two sons; Douglas Bennett of Panama and Richard of Arizona, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mack Bennett. Bob served in the Navy during WWII as an X-Ray Technician. He retired in 1987 from the UpJohn Company where he managed the X-Ray department. Bob was an avid sports enthusiast, he loved golf and enjoyed baseball and football. He served as treasurer of the Paw Paw Players for many years and participated in performances occasionally.

A memorial service was held October 4, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Paw Paw. Rev. Tiffany McCafferty officiated. Burial followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church or to the charity of your choice.

I like that prayer because it reminds us that following Christ is a daily discipline.

Jesus stressed the importance of living one day at a time. “… Each day has enough trouble of its own” is the way He said it (Matthew 6:34).

Many years ago there lived an old naturalist.

One day as he began cutting trees to build a log house, a friend asked him, “Isn’t that a big undertaking for a man of your age?” He replied, “It would be if I thought of chopping the trees, sawing the logs, skinning the bark, laying the foundation, erecting the walls and putting on the roof. Carrying the load all at once would exhaust me. But it isn’t hard to cut down this one tree, and that is all I have to do now.”

We can accomplish most anything as long as we remember it does not have to be done in one day. Each day is an opportunity to love God and others; to serve God by serving others; to make the most of our opportunities.

Edward J. “Ed” GUIDER AGE 91 – MARTIN, MI

Edward passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born July 11, 1925 in Allegan the son of John and Nora (Maher) Guider.

After graduating from Hopkins High School, Ed served his country in the US Air Force as a pilot during WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam and retired with the rank of Colonel. After WW II, he received his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and taught math at Martin High School. While serving in the Air Force he earned his MBA from George Washington University and his Masters in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in order to teach math at the Air Force Academy. In his spare time Ed enjoyed golfing on leagues in Michigan and Florida. On June 30, 1945 at Truax Army Air Field in Madison, WI he married Margaret Shipley who survives. Also surviving are his children, Edward Guider Jr of Arvada, CO, Gary (Sandi) Guider of Pinckney, MI, Michael (Lois) Guider of Oviedo, FL, Kathleen (Scott) Broers of Grand Island, NE and David (Olga) Guider of Alexandria, VA; 10 grandchildren, Mike, Matt, Corrie, Mike Jr., Brian, Eric, Jessica, Trenton, Angela and David; 14 great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Jane Velesz and his cousin, Jack Hennessey. He was preceded in death by his parents and many brothers and sisters-in-law. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of Ashes will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later time.
