Fall Leaf Pick Up 2017 REMINDER OF PICK UP PROCEDURES

The Public Works Department will be picking up leaves between October 23, 2017, and November 10, 2017. Please do not place any leaves in the streets, before October 21, 2017. Leaves will be picked up twice during the three week period. Please plan accordingly. Allegan Street residents only- Continue to place leaves in the curb lawn. Please do not place leaves near trees or poles, for easier access. Collection dates will be Thursday, October 26, 2017, and November 9, 2017 for Allegan Street only. Farmer Street residents only - Collection dates will be Friday, October 27, 2017, and November 10, 2017. Please rake leaves into the street, no earlier than the Sunday before pick-up.

Kneeling before God is the most sacred form of worship and the best way to reach the heart of God. One day “every knee shall bow and tongue confess that Jesus is Lord …” (Philippians 2:10, 11). In the meantime, prayer is our nation’s only hope for redemption, reconciliation and healing. John Knox was a great Sixteenth Century Protestant reformer. He prayed a simple yet powerful prayer for the salvation of the nation. That one prayer led to a spiritual renewal that impacted Scotland as well as points beyond. It was said that Mary Queen of Scots feared the prayers of John Knox more than all the assembled armies of Europe. Abraham Lincoln famously said, “I have been driven to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.” What might happen in a nation, if believers would fall on our knees in a prayer of repentance for spiritual revival in our land? This brings to mind the word of the Lord to Solomon (and to us) “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (II Chronicles 7:l4). Prayer: God of the nations, we humbly bow our hearts in prayer for our nation. Forgive our sins and heal our land. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Violet passed away unexpectedly Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Laurels of Sandy Creek in Wayland, MI. She was born November 15, 1951 in Kalamazoo, MI. She was raised in Plainwell, Michigan and later resided in Wayland, MI. Violet loved everyone unconditionally. She always had compassion for everyone and enjoyed helping the elderly at the nursing home where she worked early on after graduating from Plainwell High School. Later in life she also enjoyed working as a social worker at Sylvia's Place, for Domestic Violence. She also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Detroit Tigers. Violet loved to crochet, enjoyed Pitbulls & Parolees and animal rescue. Violet will be remembered for many things, and one of those is all the different goofy hats she would wear to bring a laugh or two. Also, notable was her great wit that entertained everyone and could be heard from any room in the house (winkwink). Violet was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Bessie (Moses) Slack and step-brothers Jay and Verl Simmons. She will be extremely missed by her sisters, Grace (Slack) and Patrik Nilsson and Jeanine (Slack) and Richard Handy along with stepsister, Ruth Srackangast. Violet also had several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place as were Violets wishes. Violet's life will be celebrated at the Laurels of Sandy Creek for the immediate family and close friends of the Laurels. Graveside service will follow for family. Marilyn Elizabeth (Allen) Chappell born August 31, 1930 died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Allegan County Medical Care Community, surrounded by family. Marilyn was the only daughter of Raymond and Frances Allen and was born and raised in Kalamazoo. She graduated from Western State High School. She became the bride of David Chappell on September 30, 1950 and together they raised seven children. When not busy raising her family, Marilyn had worked at Bronson Hospital, Michigan Bell Telephone and Plainwell High School. She eventually retired from Parker Hannifin Brass Division in Otsego. Marilyn enjoyed tole’ painting, knitting and various crafts, but was especially fond of quilting. She enjoyed flowers, bird watching, sewing, bingo, card games, swimming, sunbathing, sailing, traveling and baking bread for her grandson, Charlie. She was very dedicated to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had struggled with dementia for many years. She had a wonderful wit and was so expressive that even when she could no longer form words, she was able to be understood by her tone. She was cared for by her loving husband Dave until he became ill in 2014. After Dave’s death, Marilyn resided at Allegan County Medical Care Community until her passing. They provided excellent, loving care to Marilyn for over two years. Surviving are 6 of her 7 children, Gregory (Jodi) of Yakima, WA, Jeff (Char) of Plainwell, Jennifer (Tim) Mitchell of Otsego, David (Gail Harmon) of Shelbyville, Nancy (John) Eaton of Kalamazoo and Joel of Otsego; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Michele; granddaughter, Erica Mitchell; greatgranddaughter, Audrey Mellis and by her brothers, Don and Ken. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 2, 2017 at St. Margaret Catholic Church. Rev. Fr Simon Manjooran officiated. Burial followed at St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery, Otsego. AGE 73 – ALAMO TWP., MI Terry passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 in Kalamazoo. He was born August 23, 1944 in Kalamazoo the son of Everett and Beulah (Pike) Wiggins. He served his country in the US Army during Vietnam. For many years he had worked at Wheeler-Blaney and then at Airflow until his retirement. In his spare time he enjoyed following sports especially the Detroit Lions and Tigers. He also liked doing crafts and making calendars. On May 14, 1988 in Gobles he married Karen Harvey who survives. Also surviving are his children, Melissa (Kevin) Heath of Portage, Danielle Wiggins of Kalamazoo, Denise (Larry) Rutherford of Plainwell and Troy Wiggins of Kalamazoo; 8 grandchildren, Kourtnee, Mikayla, Jordon, Hunter, Jason, Beretta, Slater, Emma and another due soon and his siblings, Bill, Mike, Marian, Frances and Phyllis. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Buddy, Wayne, Everett, Martha and by his first wife, Jean. Funeral services werel held Thursday, October 5, 2017. Celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Erma J. PEARSON AGE 86 – OTSEGO, MI

Erma passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born September 18, 1931 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Reverend Allen and Rosa (Campbell) Rice. Erma was a Registered Nurse and had worked at Bronson Hospital and DeLong Ambulance Service for many years. She then went on to work for the Eaton Corp until her retirement. In her spare time Erma enjoyed fishing, especially for blue gill. Surviving are her children, Mary (Rick) Beauchamp of Otsego, Chuck (Nancy) Pearson of Kalamazoo, Susan Joliss of Indiana, Cathy (Steve) King of Galesburg, Bob Pearson of Arizona and Mary (Bill) Allen of Alaska; 14 grandchildren; many greatgrandchildren and special friend, Marcia Stafford. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray Pearson; daughter, Claudia and son, Tom. Funeral services were held Monday, October 2, 2017 at the Otsego United Methodist Church. Pastor Joe Shaler officiated. Burial took place at Portage South Cemetery on Westnedge Avenue. AGE 61 – OTSEGO, MI Wayne passed away Friday, September 29, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born October 18, 1955 in Kalamazoo the son of James and Sandra (DeKam) Mills. Wayne had worked at Parker Hannifin for over 30 years. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and spending time with his family. Wayne was an active member of the Otsego United Methodist Church. On August 29, 1992 at the Otsego United Methodist Church he married Becky Bowers who survives. Also surviving are his children, Kaitlyn and Nathan Mills both of Otsego; siblings, Lynne Burnett of Orangeville, Teri Gilger, Tami Gilger and Tom Gilger along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Gail Mills and step-father, Duane Gilger. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Otsego United Methodist Church Pastor Joe Shaler officiated. Contributions in memory of Wayne may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or to the Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids. Charles Allan SLOCUM AGE 87 – MARTIN, MI formerly of Kalamazoo

Charles passed away peacefully at his home in Martin, on September 29, 2017. Charles was born on December 11, 1929 to Charles and E. Marie (Caliman) Slocum, in Lawrence, MI. Charles joined the service directly out of high school and served in the Army and the Marines, before going to St. Augustine’s College, Raleigh, NC. Charles graduated with a physical education degree in 1951. Following college, He joined the Air Force and served in Korea from 19511955 when he received an Honorable discharge. In the summer of 1965 Charles met Patricia Latzo and married her on October 8, 1965. They moved to California where they lived happily. Charles worked as a civilian at the Long Beach Naval Shipyards. They added a son, David Allan, in 1968 and a daughter, Andrea (Andie) Marie in 1973. In 1991, Charles retired from the Naval Shipyards, and they moved to Martin, Michigan. In Michigan, Charles worked for Harold Ziegler’s in Kalamazoo, and served as a Martin Village Trustee. Charles and Patricia spent 43 years together before she passed in 2008. Charles lived in Kalamazoo, MI for a time before returning to Martin in August of 2017 and joining Doris Hawkey, Letty and Jason Sherry, where Letty was his caregiver to the end. Charles passed peacefully in his sleep, and is survived by his son David, Woodland Hills, CA, his daughter Andrea (Kelli), New Orleans, LA, two sisters-in-law’s Doris Hawkey of Martin, MI, and Joyce Slocum of Kalamazoo, MI, Nieces Letty Sherry, Debbie Lynn & Tina Cornwell, Nephew Bill Foote, and many great nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother, Boyd (Bud) Slocum. Burial will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, in Battle Creek, on Friday, October 6th at 10:30am, Memorial Services will be at Martin United Methodist Church, 969 E.
