SIGNS YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS NEED AIR SEALING There are some obvious clues that a home has leaks around the windows and doors. However, as the moderate temperatures of fall give way to harsh winter weather, homeowners who seal leaks around their doors and windows may be surprised by how effective this simple project can be at reducing energy costs and making a home more comfortable. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that sealing inefficient windows and doors can reduce annual utility bills by 7 to 15 percent. SIMPLE WAYS TO CURB HEATING COSTS Implement strategies to cut heating costs.
As fall gives way to winter, air conditioners typically get turned off and heaters get turned on. Home heating costs can quickly add up for homeowners. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, heating a space is the single largest energy expense for American households, accounting for roughly 42 percent of total residential energy consumption. However, individuals can implement certain strategies to cut down on heating costs and optimize energy efficiency.
Manage the thermostat Managing a home thermostat is a cost-effective and simple adjustment. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, turning a thermostat back by 7° to 10° F from its normal setting for eight hours a day can save up to 10 percent a year on heating bills. Utilizing the automated scheduling capabilities on programmable or smart thermostats enables people to program a lower baseline temperature when out at work or school and while sleeping.
Seal up the home Warm air from indoors can easily escape through unsealed gaps in a home. Similarly, cold air from outdoors can infiltrate through the same spots. This causes heating units to work overtime. Studies from the American Council for an EnergyEfficient Economy indicate combining window upgrades with highefficiency heating systems can cut heating demands considerably. Also, applying weatherstripping and caulking can prevent drafts, while ensuring adequate attic insulation will create a tight thermal barrier.
heat pumps deliver more thermal energy than the electrical energy they consume. Homeowners have different options that may help them reduce their heating and energy bills.
Change the heat delivery Upgrading a heating system to a more efficient one can save homeowners money. According to research by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, replacing traditional fossil-fuel furnaces with electric heat pumps can drastically reduce energy expenditures. Modern

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO FALL PLANTING AND MAINTENANCE Here are some tips to make the most of the fall gardening season
Spring and summer are perhaps the busiest times of year for gardeners. However, fall also is a prime time to tend to gardens. The tree and bare root retailer Bower & Branch advises that soil temperatures in many regions of the country may still be warm enough to encourage root growth well into the start of winter. Furthermore, fall is often the ideal time to plant, fertilize and keep a garden going or to get a head start on next year’s bounty. Here are some tips to make the most of the fall gardening season. • Think about fall annuals and bulb planting. Near the end of September, start planting cool-weather-loving pansies and violas for pops of color
as summer flowers fade. Also, it’s a good idea to stock up on bulbs that will bloom in the months to come before they sell out in stores. Wait until the temperatures really cool down before planting them in desired spots for spring sprouts. • Sow salad seeds. Lettuce, spinach, radishes, and arugula tolerate cooler temperatures. Try new and interesting lettuce varieties and enjoy salads well into the fall season. • Take inventory of the sun. Positioning a garden carefully means maximizing hours of sunlight, which begin to dwindle in the fall. Experts say gardens grow best in sunny locations that receive six hours of direct sunlight each day. This is where container gardens

can be helpful, as they allow gardeners to move plants into spots that will get ample sunlight. • Fill in landscaping gaps. Some fall plants can add color around the landscape and brighten up homes to add curb appeal. In addition to pansies and violas, asters, kale and chrysanthemums are fall blooms. Keep in mind that mums can come back year after year. So take them out of those flower pots and get them into the ground. They can be enjoyed next year as well, sprouting in early spring and developing leaves and buds through late summer. • Clean up unwanted growth. Fall is an ideal time to cut back spent vegetable plants and get rid of errant weeds. Rather than bagging leaves, mow them with a grass catcher and then add the mix to a vegetable garden as an excellent soil insulator. The nitrogen and carbon will fertilize the soil, enhancing growing possibilities and limiting weed growth. • Propagate plants in the fall. As temperatures gradually begin to cool, start taking cuttings from perennials, gathering seed pods from azaleas

and rhododendrons and dividing hardwood cuttings, says the resource Gardening Know How. Consult with a garden center or horticulturist on the proper ways to propagate stems using rooting hormone and other techniques. • Continue to water plants. Water is essential in the fall and winter as roots can still be growing. Gradually reduce watering duration as plants go dormant. Fall planting and maintenance can extend gardening season and improve the chances of growing a healthy spring garden.

As hours of daylight shorten and fall gives way to winter, thoughts shift from fall foliage to spending time cuddling under warm blankets and being cozy indoors. HOME & GARDEN Fall GREAT REASONS TO INSULATE WATER PIPES
Pipe insulation is an important part of home maintenance.
Homeowners want to do everything they can to protect their investment, and that includes both renovating a property to reflect recent trends and keeping up with routine maintenance to ensure a home does not fall into a state of disrepair. Anticipating potential issues and planning for them is part of maintaining a home. One issue homeowners may want to plan for is frozen pipes. The winter of 20252026 was notably cold. According to AccuWeather, the La Niña weather pattern was a driving force behind a particularly cold winter in various parts of the United States, including the northeast, midwest and midAtlantic regions. Temperatures in those regions were 10° to 15° F below normal, which AccuWeather notes laid the foundation for the most severe and frigid winter in nearly a decade.
The extreme cold that characterized the winter of 2025-2026 forced some homeowners to confront issues they had not anticipated, including frozen pipes. Pipe insulation is an important part of home maintenance that some homeowners may not have been aware of as recently as early 2026, but the following are some notable reasons to add this to your homerelated to-do list before winter returns. • Insulation prevents pipes from freezing. Frozen water inside pipes can start what’s essentially a chain reaction that can cause pipes to expand. When pipes expand, the resulting pressure can cause them to burst. By insulating pipes, homeowners can prevent them from freezing. Insulating pipes that are already behind a wall is not a simple job, so it’s best left to a professional. But pipes that are along exterior walls should be insulated to ensure they do not freeze when temperatures drop and remain low. Pipes in attics, basements and crawl spaces may be exposed, and homeowners may be able to insulate these on their own.
• Insulating pipes can save you money. Water pipes are a notable way to save energy and money. According to the DOE, insulating water pipes reduces heat loss and can raise water temperature by as much as 2° to 4° F. That allows homeowners to lower the temperature setting on their water heaters, which saves money. Insulating pipes also reduces the time it takes for water to warm up when turning on a faucet or shower, which leads to lower water bills.
Insulating pipes is a worthwhile undertaking for all homeowners, and can be particularly beneficial for those who live in areas with extreme • Insulation can reduce the risk of weather in winter and summer. mold growth. Winter is not the only time of year it pays to have insulated pipes. Pipes are subject to mold growth. That can happen when pipes sweat in humid climates (think of a PREVENTS FREEZING water bottle left out in the hot sun). SAVES YOU MONEY The resulting condensation from sweating pipes can drip and lead to REDUCES MOLD GROWTH the growth of mold in surrounding INEXPENSIVE areas, including within the walls. • Insulation is inexpensive. Homeowners who have grown accustomed to costly repairs and renovations should know that insulating pipes, particularly exposed

pipes, is an inexpensive project. While it will cost more to insulate pipes within walls due to the extra work required to access such areas and address them once insulation has been installed, insulating those pipes, especially if they’re along exterior walls, can greatly reduce the risk for potentially costly damage down the road.

AGE 70 - PLAINWELL, MI Jeffrey D Allen left this earth in August 2026 and was received by his Lord Jesus. His family is grieving, but knows he is totally cured in mind and body from the terrible disease of Alzheimer's. Jeff was born in 1956, the second son of Don and Virginia (nee Kelso) Allen in Plainwell, Michigan, and grew up there. He grew up in a great neighborhood full of kids that remained friends his entire life. They biked until the streetlights came on, played street baseball and did all the things kids did in the 1950s. He had many fond memories of his childhood. Jeff had plans to become an autoshop teacher, but plans changed when doctors found a large brain tumor when he was 18. He received radiation therapy after surgery couldn't resolve it. He recovered and went on to work at Borgess Hospital as an EEG technician for 37 years. He married Linda Zamora in 1978, who he had met at Borgess, and they had two daughters, Erin (Plainwell), and Jessie (Richland). Linda passed away in 2015. He was proud of his career and would reminisce about the time he fell off a steel building they were erecting and how he broke both of his wrists but kept going. Kevin also enjoyed music and liked listening to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and other classic country musicians. He loved to get the party going by loudly stomping his foot, clapping his hands, laughing and singing along to his favorite, Ring of Fire and doing the “Hooper Stomp”. Kevin liked watching old TV shows such as Andy Griffith, Gun Smoke and other cowboy classics. He would have the TV so loud it sounded like the shoot out was in the living room instead of on the TV. He was an avid NASCAR fan and liked following Dale Earnhardt. He spent the last 10 years of his life being a snowbird between Plainwell and Florida. Even though he could be complicated at times, he was kind, generous and had a heart of gold. A good example is when he showed up last fall at Sisters of St. Joseph with a truck load of mums that he helped plant in a garden outside his mom’s room. How appropriate that the mums are starting to bloom. A reminder of how a small deed can change lives. Surviving are his wife, Vivian “Vicky” Scott; stepchildren, Scott Carter (Tonya), Stacy Carter and Tina Winkles (Chris); 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; mother, Linda Hallett; stepmother, Rosie Scott; siblings, Jodi Giltrop, Lisa Miller and Todd Scott (Tracy) along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond; stepfather, John Hallett and brother-in-law, Tom Miller. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 9, 2026, at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego, with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating. Contributions in memory of Kevin may be directed to Wishbone Pet Rescue. Arrangements by

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Frank Williams, 90, of Plainwell, Michigan who passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 27, 2026, surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home. Don was born on June 25, 1936, in Cooper, Michigan to Frank and Frances (Engle) Williams. He spent his early years in Plainwell where he made lifelong friendships and enjoyed playing football at PHS for coach Streidl and the Trojans. Growing up, he began building a strong foundation of Faith, family and hard work that would remain at the center of his life. On July 6, 1956, Don married the love of his life Nancy L. Foust. Together they shared 70 years of marriage and welcomed eight children. Their marriage has been a testament to faith, commitment, devotion and love. Don and Nancy raised the family to put Jesus Christ first, remember the importance of family and family history. Throughout his life, Don wore many hats. He was an auto mechanic by trade and owned a couple of different gas stations/garages where he had a reputation for being able to fix any vehicle breakdown. He also sold cars, roofing/siding, and pastored a church, always to provide for his family. After his 12 hour days at the station, his spare time was filled with many other interests. He was a member of the Lions Club, Elks Lodge, led worship music at church, taught Sunday School, served on the Plainwell planning committee and was elected to the Plainwell School Board where he served as President for seven out of eight years. Don was always ready to throw a party and have family over—rain or shine, a party scheduled was a party that happened. He never missed a sporting event at Plainwell where his children were on the field, or playing in the band. He truly had a well-lived life and set a good example for all. Don is survived by his beloved wife Nancy, his children Michael (Dee), Sandra Spicer, Donald (Toni), Leanne (Kevin) Thiel, Matthew (Cindi), Walter, and daughter-in-law Ingrid. He is also survived by a close friend of the family Renee (Steve) Beckwith; his grandchildren Elizabeth, Kelsey, Chole, Teresa, Leah, Nancy, Gina, Simon, Donald, James, Katherine, Audrianna, Zachariah, Bailey, Caleb, Addison, Holli, Lucas, Michelle, Jason, Rachel, Emma and Mary, along with 21 great grandchildren with 1 on the way and more to follow. He is also survived by his sister Jean Hammond, brother Jim (Sharon) and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his infant daughter Teresa Kay, son Kevin, and grandson Brian; his parents Frank and Frances, sisters Shirley Scott, Neala Godding, Charlene (Chick) Nooney, and brothers Paul and Walter. Also, son-in-law Robert Lash and Reggie Spicer. A service celebrating Don’s well-lived life will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 AM with a service to follow at 11:00 AM, with a luncheon immediately following will all be held At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry, 814 21st Street, Otsego, MI 49078. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Don’s name to At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministries or Wings of Hope Hospice. The family is being assisted by

26 pounds of pure cuddle energy wrapped in an 11-month old body. Dug isn’t just a love bug... he’s a snuggle specialist. His hobbies include lap sitting, kiss giving, and leaning his whole body into you like you’re his personal pillow. He’s not big on toys (yet!), but he is big on snacks. Dug is extremely food motivated and thinks enrichment toys are amazing... as long as they involve treats. New situations and doorways can be a little spooky for him, and sometimes he’ll stop and say, “I need a moment.” A soft voice and gentle encouragement help him move forward. A predictable home routine would help him feel secure and confident. Dug prefers a dog free lifestyle - he wants his people all to himself and doesn’t enjoy sharing space with other dogs. If you want a sweet, quirky, snuggle obsessed pup who will follow you like a little love shadow, Dug is your guy. Retrospect
There have been so many times in my life when I felt God was absent. I didn’t feel or sense His presence through some difficult “between a rock and a hard place” moments in life. There were times when I even cried out to God with some prayerful assumptions, “God, why have you abandoned me? Why have you left me on my own to deal with this painful situation? How could you leave me when I need you so desperately?” Can you relate to these sorts of prayers? Like Jacob, when I look back on those moments when God seemed absent, I realize “surely the Lord is in this place” of pain or loneliness even though “I was not aware of it.” Even though pain might keep us from seeing and being present to God, it does not keep God from seeing and being present with us. I know that Footprints poem is a bit cheesy and overdone, but it is true. There are times in life when we see only one set of footprints in the sand and conclude God left us to walk the lonely beach of life alone. Truth is, if we have given our life to Christ, the set of footprints we see in the sand are His. He carries us. Sometimes we are not aware of God’s presence in the moment, but realize only in retrospect He was with us. Jesus promised his followers, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). And He is a God who keeps His promises.

Have you ever had a Jacob moment, a retrospective hindsight moment in which awareness came from looking back? In Genesis 28:16, Jacob woke up from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” There is so much power in what Jacob realized.
