Cyndi Trobeck was appointed to the City of Otsego Commission on July 6, 2010. Cyndi is an alumnus of Otsego High and has her BBA from Western Michigan University and MBA from Davenport University. Currently, she is a Realtor for Cornell & Associates and is involved in the community of Otsego in a variety of ways, including: Rotary, the Downtown District Authority, Hometown Christmas, Christian Neighbors, and the Fire Department and Economic Vitality Committees. She is married to Gary and they have three grown sons. With ten-plus years on the Otsego City Commission (four of them as Mayor), Cyndi Trobeck has the experience and knowledge to help guide Otsego through the next four years.
Dustin McNees is a married father of four, originally from Plainwell. He works as the Fair Lending Liaison for Amerifirst Home Mortgage. Dustin was appointed to the Commission a year-and-a-half ago, and during that time, he successfully spearheaded the purchase and implementation of policeworn body cameras, which will protect our officers, citizens, and City while also building trust and saving money. He also has served on the Economic Vitality and Fire Department committees, and has volunteered with Hometown Christmas, seasonal downtown decorations, Gus Macker, and the Creative Arts Festival, for which he is also a chairperson. Dustin is committed to government transparency, fiscal responsibility, and citizen advocacy.

Bob passed away Friday, October 23, 2020 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born October 8, 1953 in Kalamazoo, the son of Archie and Helen (Rogers) Willover. Bob was a 1971 Otsego High School graduate and lifelong resident of the area. He worked at E.W. Bliss and then at Hammond Machine until his retirement 20 years ago. In his free time Bob enjoyed fishing, playing softball, trips to the beach to watch the sunset with his wife, lifting weights and riding his bicycle. He was an animal lover and liked following sports. Bob was very social and enjoyed talking politics, religion and history with his many friends. On November 1, 1980 in Plainwell he married Marcia Carroll who survives. Also surviving are his children, Candace Willover, Eric Willover, Christopher Willover and Jeanette Willover; 7 grandchildren, siblings, Dennis Willover and Mike Willover along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A graveside service led by his family will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, October 30, 2020, at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Steven passed away October 16, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 10, 1955 in Plainwell, Michigan. The second child of James and Carole Kent, Steve graduated from Martin High School and worked throughout his life at Miller Sand and Gravel, Checker Motor, Allegan County Road Commission, then retiring from James Fulton and Sons after 20 years. Steve is survived by his siblings, Phil (Cindi) Kent, Walt (Dawn) Kent and Kris (Bill) McLaughlin, his ex-wife/friend (divorced but never separated) Vicky Kent, his children, Michelle (Scott) Drewyor, Trayton (Cari) Kent, Andrew (Jen) Kent, Lucas (Taylor) Kent and 17 grandchildren. Steven enjoyed gardening, bowling, fishing, hunting and Popov, a true outdoorsman. He was preceeded in death by his parents and brother Curt. The family would like to give a special thank you to hospice and nurse Amy. In accordance to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to Covid-concerns his family will arrange for a Celebration of Life to be held in the Summer of 2021.
LaVern passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020 in Martin. He was born April 19, 1935 in Martin Township, the son of Foster and Florence (Oosterhouse) DeMann. LaVern owned and operated a dairy farm in Martin for many years. He was a member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association and East Martin Christian Reformed Church. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, playing games and reading to his grandchildren. On August 29, 1957 in Byron Center he married Tressa Morren who passed away in 2019. Surviving are his children, Ken (Michelle) DeMann of Hudsonville, Doug (Jeanne) DeMann of Martin and Pat (Keith) Kuyper of Dorr; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren with the 12th arriving anytime; brothers, Don (Eleanor) DeMann, Dale (Marilyn) DeMann and Carl (Judy) DeMann; sister, Betty (Phil) VanNoord along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son, Jim DeMann. Friends may visit with LaVern’s family from 2-5 PM, Sunday, October 25, 2020 at the East Martin Christian Reformed Church where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 26, 2020 with Pastor Derek Noorman officiating. AGE 76 • PLAINWELL, MI Mike passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at his home in Plainwell. He was born May 24, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Wendell and Joan (Bos) Lee. Mike served his country in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. He attended Western Michigan University and worked at Sportco Marketing Inc. for several years until his retirement in 1999. In his spare time, Mike enjoyed golfing and woodworking. He was a member of the Lake Doster Men’s Golf Association. Mike married Margaret Lee who passed away in 1997. In 2002 he married Nancy Harris who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Matt (Michelle) Lee and Adam Lee; step-sons, Christopher (Julie) Harris and Keegan Harris; grandchildren, Ellie Lee, Andon Lee and Liam Harris and sisters, Cher Lee and Deb Lee. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Margaret and brother, Steve Lee. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Private family burial of ashes will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later time. Steve passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 24, 2020. He was born November 19, 1955 in Plainwell, Michigan, the son of James “Jim" and Joyce (DeKam) McGuire. Steve was a loving grandfather, father, son and brother with a great soul, who loved his friends and family deeply. He shared his great love for music and sports with his two sons. He loved the great outdoors, working in his yard and garden, fishing, and just spending time with family and friends. Steve is survived by his sister Christie and (Curt) Fontaine, and brothers, Doug and (Kasandra) McGuire, Jimmy and (Kumi) McGuire, and his children, Rynita McGuire, Kelly McGuire, Amber (Christopher) Johnston, Steven (Alysa) McGuire and Micheal McGuire; and his grandchildren, Isaiah, Hunter, Griffin, Avery, Gerrit and Elise. Steve was preceded in death by his mother Joyce McGuire, his brother Micheal, grandparents Bernard and Mildred (Brown) McGuire, and John and Marie (Elferink) DeKam. According to his wishes cremation has taken place with burial of ashes at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on November 7th from 12:30pm3:30pm at the Watson Township Hall, for family and friends.

Elwyn passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at his home in Allegan. He was born June 7, 1940 in Charlotte, the son of Louis and Beulah (Mason) Engelter. Elwyn was a graduate of Western Michigan University. He worked as an aerospace engineer at National Water Lift, Parker and retired from Eaton in 2007. He owned and operated Recreation Country a lawn and garden business. Elwyn liked to tinker and could fix anything. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying. He loved riding motorcycles, collecting antique bikes and traveling. He was the president of the Wolverine Chapter of Antique Motorcycles Association. Elwyn was a volunteer at the Gilmore Car Museum and was an instrumental part of the opening of their motorcycle gallery. He also volunteered with garage works where he mentored and taught motorcycle restoration to youth. Elwyn was active in the Jaycees and was a past president at the state level. On August 23, 1997 he married Barbara Bradfield who survives. Also surviving are his children, Robert (Lisa) Engelter of Plainwell, Andrea (Douglas Horton) Engelter of Plainwell and Lincoln Engelter of California; step-daughter, Lori (Rob) East of Galesburg; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; brother, Knowle (Pat) Engelter of Parma along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Shirleyann Shaw and Wendell Engelter. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in the spring. ADOPTABLE Pet of the Week! Isn’t DERBY adorable?... He is also a well-mannered, loving and friendly guy. If he were your doggy, you could look into those warm loving eyes every day. How sweet would that be?! Derby is starting to show signs of stress at the shelter and needs to get into a home environment as soon as possible. Derby would love a forever home with kids 12 and up to love him up and have fun together. He will need a cat free home, but could have a doggy sibling. Jesus had something to say about masks. The most notorious “mask-wearers” of Jesus’ time were leaders of religious sects known as the Pharisees and Sadducees. They had all the outward signs of righteousness (Godliness) but Jesus saw them for what they were on the inside. They kept the letter of the law but ignored the spirit of the law.
COMPANION
We hear a lot about masks today. We swear by them; protest against them; and politicize them. During our childhood we wore Halloween masks in order to pretend to be someone or something we are not. Masks are worn at parties and celebrations.
Jesus called them out. “Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean.” (Matthew 23:27). The word hypocrite means “play-actor.”
The point: It’s what’s inside that counts! “Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart” (I Samuel 16:7). In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), Jesus traced murder to anger, adultery to lust and outward behaviors to inward motives. In our judgment of others Jesus warned, “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye.” (Matthew 7:4-5). We do not have to wear a mask before God because God knows us better than we know ourselves (Psalm 139). Since ancient times there has been the question of how sinful humans can approach a holy God. The Psalmist asked and answered the question as follows: Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart…” (Psalm 24:3-4)
Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Matthew 5:8). The pure in heart are those who humble themselves before God. They are sincere, honest, authentic and genuine from within.
The matter is settled. In approaching God and living for God, masks are not required.
Prayer: Dear Lord, purify our hearts from within. In Your strong name. Amen.
