• The leaves have fallen. • Cooler weather has settled in. • Daylight Savings time ends this year on November 1, 2015. • Seasons, in part, are determined by the yearly orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The Bible defines time in at least two ways: • Chronos Time – time measured by the clock. • Kairos Time – time measured by the special moments of life. Regarding the coming of Jesus into our world, we read in Mark l: l5, “The time has come … The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Kairos time).
There are times and seasons in the spiritual life. Examples: • The moment of searching (Isaiah 55:6; Matthew 7:7). • The moment of awareness (Psalm l39:14; John 20:28). • The moment of belief (John 3:16). • The moment of commitment (Matthew 4:l9). • The moment of new birth/conversion (John 3:3; Acts 9:17-19). • The moment of spiritual growth (Luke 2:52). • The moment of opportunity (Ephesians 5:15, 16). • The moment of kindness (Luke l0:30-37). • The moment of prayer (Romans 8:26, 27). • The moment of resurrection (John 11:25, 26).
While there are many times and seasons, there is one fact that never changes, “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever!” (Hebrews 13:8).

GET READY FOR HUNTING
2 pounds venison roast, cut into 1 inch cubes 1 1/2 cup red wine Kosher salt and pepper 5 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 6 ounces no nitrate bacon, chopped 4 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped 2 yellow onions, chopped 4 ribs celery, roughly chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound potatoes, cut into 2 inch cubes 1 pound button mushrooms, halved 1 tablespoon thyme
Vitamin B6, B12, and Omega 3 fatty acids, too. I cook it five nights a week, along with heirloom produce from our garden, for my husband and our seven children. As the author of three field-totable cookbooks and the website gameandgarden.com, my passion is sharing recipes and tips for how to cook venison and for harvesting and preparing other foods from the field, garden, and the chicken coop. Here are the five things every cook should know about how to cook venison: 1. Don’t overcook it. The number one mistake people make when preparing venison is that they overcook it, rendering the meat rubbery and gamey. Tender cuts of venison should be served rare or medium rare unless you are braising it or mixing it with pork to add more fat. 2. Match the cut of meat to the cooking method for the most tender results. Naturally tender cuts like loins and tenderloin take well to high heat grilling, pan searing, or stuffing and trussing and should be served rare to medium rare. Tougher muscles from the shoulder, shank or neck should be braised or stewed slow and low. Try this soup with 2 tablespoons oregano 2 tablespoons rosemary 1quart beef stock 16 ounces canned tomatoes, crushed with your hands
PREPARATION:
1. In a large bowl, place venison and red wine. Marinade in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for at least 2 hours. While reserving wine marinade, remove the venison to a rack and dry with a paper towel. Venison needs to be dry to brown properly. Liberally salt and pepper the venison. 2. In a Dutch Oven or large cast iron skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil until almost smoking. Brown venison in
lentils, venison, and sausage. The hindquarter cut is incredibly versatile and can be cut into steaks, tenderized, and cooked just like the loin; cut into cubes for low and slow method; use it in sauces; cut into strips across the grain and used in salads, fajitas, burritos, or on sandwiches. I also cut the hindquarter into 1-inchthick steaks, pound them, bread and pan-fry them to make Parmesan Venison, Country Fried Steak or Venison Scaloppine. 3. Venison is not corn-fed beef. Don’t substitute it in beef recipes. Deer have less fat and marbling than corn-fed beef. The upside is flavor; deer forage on grass, herbs, acorns, among other plants, while cattle eat a corn and grainbased diet. This depth of flavor is why many of the top restaurants charge such high prices for venison on their menus. 4. Use dry rubs and marinades. Most of my dry rubs contain salt and also coffee or ginger, which break down the enzymes in the meat, tenderizing it without making it mushy like some of the other tenderizers do. Marinades rely on acids such as wine, vinegar, or lemon or lime juice to denature the proteins. I

3. Add bacon, carrots, onions, celery, and garlic to the pan and cook over medium-high heat until browned and onions are translucent (about 6 minutes). Add potatoes, mushrooms, thyme, oregano, rosemary, reserved wine, beef stock, tomatoes, and 1tablespoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper to the pan. Bring mixture to a boil and add venison back to the pan. Cover and simmer for 2 hours. Turn the heat off and allow to sit uncovered for 30 minutes. This seems to allow the meat to tenderize even more. Serve with crusty bread! So so good!!

To wet age, thaw the meat in the refrigerator in its vacuumsealed packaging, and refrigerate it for up to 14 days in the refrigerator.

AGE 74 – KALAMAZOO, MI (formerly of Otsego, MI)
Jill passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at her home in Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born on October 4, 1941 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Lloyd and Helen (Bujack) Bowker. She was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and had worked for the James River Company for almost 30 years. She had attended the Alamo Congregational Church and the First Baptist Church in Otsego. Jill was married to Glenn M. Garrison in 1968; he preceded her in death in 1994. Survivors include her grandchildren, Heather Stephenson of Otsego, Scott Stephenson of CA and Kelsey Culver of MI; and 3 great-grandchildren, Amelia, Adysin and Axel. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Dawn Riley; and by a brother, Jack Bowker. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego on October 24, 2015. Rev. Richard Larson officiated. Contributions in memory of Jill may be made to Camp AO-WA-KIYA. Donald E. KRIDLER AGE 82 – PLAINWELL, MI
Donald passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 at his home in Plainwell. He was born October 30, 1932 in Kalamazoo to Darwin and Helen (DeWater) Kridler. Don served his country in the US Navy. He had worked for Farm Services Silo Co. and then for the City of Otsego’s Department of Public Works where he ran the transfer station until his retirement. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, listening to music and playing the banjo. Don was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge #345. On January 28, 1960 in Kalamazoo he married Zonna Sherwood who survives. Also surviving are their children, Dianne (Floyd), Donald and Annette; 2 step-children, Genese and Terry; several grand and great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and his sisters, Birdie and Shirley. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and a sister. A celebration of life open house will be held Saturday, October 31, 2015 starting at 1:00 P.M. at 939 Marsh Rd. Plainwell. Dorothy passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born October 30, 1922 in Ironton, OH to William and Catherine (VanHaften) DeHaven. Dorothy was a 1940 Plainwell High School graduate and had worked for her parents at DeHaven Soda Shop in Plainwell until the mid 1940’s. There she met Louis Beattie and on June 3, 1944 they were married in Plainwell. Together they owned and operated Beattie’s Flowers & Gifts in Otsego until the mid 1950’s. She had also worked at Dick’s Grocery and then at Otsego Party Store until her retirement. In her spare time Dorothy enjoyed golfing. Surviving are her children, Sandra Stedman of NC and Ron (Debra) Beattie of Otsego; 4 grandchildren, Kenneth, David and Jessica Beattie and Stephanie (Jim) Fraser; 2 great-grandchildren, Jimmy and Elaina; and her sister, Betty Stewart of Gulliver. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters, Kathleen Nay and Nancy Thompson. Friends may visit with Dorothy’s family from 5-8 P.M. on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Cremation will follow. A private family burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Contributions in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Life Care Center of Plainwell’s Activities Fund. She had worked at Checker Motors, Parker Hannifin and the Gun Lake Casino. Sabine was a born leader who enjoyed waitressing and cooking at the VFW. In her spare time she enjoyed disco and line dancing, canoeing, knitting, crocheting, going to flea markets, german food, watching reality tv, listening to classic 80’s music, having a glass of wine and most of all she loved spending time with her family and loved ones. Surviving are her fiancé, Brian Dalton of Otsego; children, Samantha (Damien) Masters of Otsego, Alton “Joey” Cook and Tony Cook both of Plainwell; 2 grandchildren, Caine and Riley Masters and her family in Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Peter Panz and by her step-father, Alfred Muller. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego with Father Donald Klingler officiating.
