John “Johnnie” Paul BOYSEN AGE 47 - PLAINWELL, MI

John “Johnnie” Paul Boysen, 47, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Born on June 30, 1978, in Plainwell, MI, to Paul and Peggy (Hayes) Boysen, Johnnie grew up surrounded by family, friends, and a deep love for the outdoors that would stay with him throughout his life. For the past thirteen years, Johnnie worked at West Michigan Scales in Plainwell, where he was known for his strong work ethic, dependable nature, and easygoing personality. Whether on the job or out and about, he had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend—quick with a story, a laugh, or a helping hand. In his free time, Johnnie could almost always be found doing what he loved most—hunting and fishing. Early in his relationship with Cheryl, he made it clear that his time on the water was sacred, and she loved him all the more for it. His pride and joy was his 1985 Ranger Classic bass fishing boat, and he often talked about his next dream project: finding a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda. Family and friends were the heart of Johnnie’s world. Sundays were reserved for visiting his mom, and he cherished every moment spent with loved ones. He was the kind of person who could strike up a conversation with anyone, make them laugh within minutes, and leave them smiling long after. Johnnie will be forever missed by his wife, Cheryl Boysen; his mother; his siblings: Kim (Chris) Ortega, Toni (Jim) McDonald, Michelle Wesaw, Laura (Tony) Graff, Scott (Melissa) Boysen, and Todd Boysen; his many nieces and nephews: Khett Stevenson, Cameron (Amanda) Stevenson, Trevor Stevenson, Jennifer Murray, Casey (Dan) Johnson, Nikki Arredondo, Melanie Boysen, Jessica Stevenson, Tarah Boysen, Ashley (Andy) Kowers, Shannon Hurlbert and Ryan Boysen; and his dear friends: Nic Hammond, Chad Hillard, Clayton Bonawitz, and Shawn Murphy. He leaves behind countless memories, a legacy of laughter, and a reminder to live life with kindness, curiosity, and a good sense of humor. There will be a Celebration of Life in the summer of 2026 where everyone can celebrate Johnnie outside where he loved to be.

AGE 68 - PLAINWELL, MI

Terry Irgens, age 68, of Plainwell, MI, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 19, 1956, in Albion, MI, to Christine Haywood and the late Forrest Hanks. Terry’s life was defined by her deep love for family, her kindness, and her joyful spirit. She first married Steve Morgan in 1973, and together they welcomed their daughter, Monica (Jason) Cherrington. On September 16, 1976, she married Jarl Irgens, and they built a life together that included their daughter, Erica (Rich) Bonnau. Terry was an incredibly proud grandmother to Adam, Chloe, Zackary, Cheyanne, and Jarl, all of whom brought her tremendous happiness. She is also survived by her mother, Christine Haywood; nephew, Phil Hanks; and sisters-in-law, Heidi Irgens and Nancy Hanks. She was preceded in death by her father, Forrest Hanks, and brothers, Rand and Timothy Hanks. Terry worked at Plainwell Lanes for more than a decade, where she formed lasting friendships and enjoyed being part of the community. She loved spending time at the casino and never turned down a good game of bingo. Her family fondly remembers her love for animals, especially her loyal companion, Chuey, who held a special place in her heart. Some of her most cherished memories were made on family trips to Florida—especially in Daytona Beach—where laughter and sunshine were always abundant. Terry will be remembered for her warmth, humor, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved. Her legacy lives on through the family and friends who will miss her dearly.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” ~Matthew 5:8 By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor1945@gmail.com

The sixth key to the Kingdom is to be pure in heart. During this season of the year people celebrate by wearing masks. To wear a mask is to pretend we are someone we are not. This is a fun thing, especially when children are involved. In the spiritual realm, wearing a mask is not necessary. God knows us and accepts us as we are. We do not have to be someone else. The kind of mask-wearing that Jesus condemned was the religious rulers of His time – specifically the Pharisees and Sadducees. They looked pious on the outside, but were impure on the inside. Jesus had harsh words for them, calling them hypocrites which means “play-actors” (Matthew 23:27). They kept the letter of the law but greatly missed the spirit of the law which is love.

We think of the heart as being the seat of human emotions. For Jesus, it is so much more. When Jesus spoke about the heart he was talking about our total personality, inner attitude and motives. It is possible to do the right thing with the wrong motive. For example, we can worship in order to draw attention to ourselves rather than to glorify God. The psalmist defined true worship as approaching God “with clean hands and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:4). The Bible says “Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart” (I Samuel 16:7).

Single-minded Christians are genuine, authentic, honest and sincere in how they relate to God and other people. In other words, the best way to see God is through the eyes of faith. How we see God depends on the condition of our hearts.

Prayer: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). In Your strong name. Amen.

The family of Mary Ellen Wright would like to express our heartfelt gratefulness to our friends and extended family for the love, support and encouragement that has been given during her passing. It is during these times when we truly realize how blessed we are to be surrounded by such an amazing community of supporters. A special thank you to Peace Lutheran Church, Pastor Timmerman and Winkel Funeral Home for helping navigate us through these times as well. Mary will be greatly missed, but will live in our hearts until we can giggle and laugh together again in our eternal heavenly home.

Our mission is to demonstrate God ’ s love to those in our community in need during the Christmas Season.

If leaves are placed in the street after completion of the canvassing, they will not be removed. It is the resident’s responsibility to dispose of the leaves at the Transfer Station.

The Friend Zone

“The friend zone” is when someone with a romantic crush is seen by their crush as only a friend—not a lover. But I want to repurpose the phrase, “the friend zone,” so that it’s more positive. The friend zone is when we hit that sweet spot in our friendship with someone, becoming the kind of friend they need us to be. There are some widely celebrated friend zone friendships; like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee, and Martha Stewart and Snoopdog. But perhaps the most inspirational friend zone friendship in all of history is the one in the Bible between Jonathan, the prince, and David, the shepherd.

Jonathan was next in line to be king, once his father, King Saul, died. But after David defeated Goliath, Jonathan sensed in his soul that God wanted David to be the next king of Israel. Instead of getting angry, anxious or jealous, as King Saul did toward David, Jonathan befriended David and helped him to become king. Jonathan willingly gave up his right to the throne and gave that right to David. Why would Jonathan give up everything for David? Because the Bible tells us twice that “Jonathan loved David as himself” (1 Samuel 18:3, 20:17). This is why Jonathan was able to find the friend zone.

So, do you have a friend zone friend who loves you as him or herself? More importantly, are you a friend zone friend? Do we love our friends as we love ourselves? If we do, we will, like Jonathan, sacrifice our power and position to elevate and celebrate our friends. If we do, we will advocate for our friends speaking well of them behind their backs, like “Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul” (1 Sam. 19:4). If we do, we will be available to our friends no matter what they need, like Jonathan who said to David: “whatever you want me to do, I will do for you” (1 Sam. 20:4). Are you a friend zone friend like Jonathan was to David? Be the sort of friend you want to have.

You are loved, Pastor Lenny Luchetti
