Homeless people often encounter a lot of health issues in their lives.

Their health suffers from lack of medical attention, healthy food and shelter. Common ailments of the homeless include: cold injur y, tuberculosis, skin and cardio-respirator y diseases, nutritional deficiencies, sleep deprivation, mental illness, physical and sexual assault, drug dependency, HIV/AIDS and mortality.

Psychologically, homelessness takes its toll as well. Some of the consequences: loss of self esteem, behavioral problems, becoming institutionalized, increase in substance misuse, loss of ability and will to care for oneself, increased danger of abuse, violence and entering the criminal justice system.

A Victorious Thank You to Pastor B.J. Luce: We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our pastor at Valley View Bible Church. Words of

“TOUCHING LIVES”

When I retired from pastoral ministry, a reporter from the local newspaper interviewed me. In the course of the conversation I was asked what stood out as far as my ministry was concerned. I responded, “When people think of the church, they think of the number of members. When I think of the church’s ministry, I think of lives touched.”

Most of us can name persons who have touched our lives in positive ways. The best part is that we in turn can influence others.

Some call it “giving back.” Jesus called it letting your light shine.

I was thinking of this recently while listening to our Praise Team singing a song by Don Potter called, “Love Never Fails” (I Corinthians l3). The words in part read: “If I could speak, with tongues of men, but don’t have love, I give nothing to them …

Have we learned to love each other?

Or is this whole thing a lie?

Has my life, really touched another, There’s only one thing that prevails … love never fails…”

Here is another way of saying it:

“… We are all role models, and we all can and should have a positive impact on someone’s life. God has placed each of us where we are for a reason: within our spheres of influence at work, in our neighborhoods, in our families. He wants us to touch lives wherever he leads us.

Whether you are a friend to a bullied boy in middle school, a ray of light in your neighborhood book club, a supportive coach for a high school team, an available shoulder to someone at a time of loss, or a hand held out to a child looking for a little hope, we all can change the course of our nation and world, one life at a time, for the rest of our lives.” ~ Coach Tony Dungy, Quiet Strength

The good news is that Jesus continues to touch lives today through us.

Myron “Sonny” KNIGHT

Reverend Roland W. WELCH AGE 88 – OTSEGO, MI

Myron passed away Sunday, October 18, 2015 at his home. He was born September 9, 1930 on the family farm in Martin to Roy and Irene (Pease) Knight. Myron had delivered for Pet Milk Co. before going to work for Checker Motor Co. until his retirement. He had also done some farming. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, gardening and watching his grandchildren play sports. Myron was a member of the Lions Club and was a lifelong U of M Fan. On March 30, 1951 in Martin he married Joan DeMann who passed away in 2014. Surviving are their children, Dennis (Kathy) Knight and Duane (Deb) Knight; daughterin-law, Marie Young-Knight; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; siblings, Maynard (Merle) Knight and Gloria Ritchie; sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Dave) Colvin and Reva Knight and brother-in-law, Ron (Sharon) DeMann. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son, Don Knight. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the Watson Bible Church with Pastor Jim Collison officiating. Burial followed at the South Martin Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Myron may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Don Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Reverend Roland Welch went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, October 21, 2015. He was born March 2, 1927 in Raymond Center, Wisconsin to Earle and Lily (Tiegs) Welch.

He served his country in the US Army during World War II. In 1947 he entered Concordia Theological Seminary at Springfield, IL. After completing his under-graduate years of study he received calls into the ministry of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to Evangelical Lutheran congregations at Brodhead, WI; Fountain City, WI; Arenzville, IL; Hopkins and Dorr, MI; Bay City, MI and Flint, MI. Finally, after a nine year leave of absence from the Gospel Ministry, during which time he served in the Flint area as a District Representative of Aid Association for Lutherans, he received a semi-retirement call to an Evangelical Lutheran Church at Angleton, TX until his complete retirement in 1994. On June 25, 1950 in Springfield, IL he married Barbara Williams who survives.

Also surviving are their children, Marty (Sandy) Welch of CA, Rick (Joyce) Welch of Otsego, Mary (Bill) Hildebrand of Shelbyville, Leanne (Randy) Rase of Bay City, Jenny (Carl) Heinz of Bay City, Bill (Amy) Welch of Arenzville, IL, Tom (Pam) Welch of Pembroke Pines, FL and Mike Welch and companion Becky Henden of Simpsonville, NC; 23 grandchildren; 35 greatgrandchildren; sister, Elaine Berglin of Stephenson and sister-in-law, Judy (Harry) Putz of Fountain City, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers and sisters and by his grandson, Marty Rase. Friends may visit with Roland’s family from 2-5 P.M. Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 26, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Rick Scheibe officiating. A private family burial will take place at Floral Gardens Cemetery in Bay City. Contributions in memory of Roland may be made to the “Tommy Welch Tuition Fund MLC” (Martin Luther College).

Doc passed away on October 19, 2015 at his home. Doc serviced his Country in the Marine Corp. He enjoyed cooking and listening to Bob Dylan.

Doc’s family includes his wife, Diane; son, Christopher Harvey; grandson, Darrell; six siblings: Sue (Ron) Cade, Pat (Jerry) Halstead, Becky (John) Lidster, David (Cheryl) Sherwood, Roxanne Gates, Robin (Tom) Moran as well as several nieces and nephews including a special niece Amber who helped take care of him and great great nephew Bentlee Paul. Doc was preceded in death by his parents; four sibling: Jerry, Joe, Sally and Michael. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 22, 2015.
