Faith &Hope

“IT HELPS IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE” “… Faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love” ~ I Corinthians 13:13 Have you noticed how words have changed their meaning over the years? There was a time when a chip meant a piece of wood; hardware meant hardware and software wasn’t even a word; grass was something you mowed and coke was something you drank.

Every profession has its own uniqueness.

There is the language of medicine, the language of a politician, military language, language of a lawyer, etc. Sometimes people do not have a clue what we are saying.

Even in the church we use words like salvation, grace and sanctification, assuming people know what we are talking about. Well-known author and speaker Gary Smalley told of an experience he had leading a seminar. The morning session had gone well and after lunch he hurried back to rearrange the chairs for the next session. He found an empty room and a nice looking gentleman who just sat there.

There was not much time and twice Gary asked the man to help him set up chairs. The man just smiled and nodded. Gary became angry. After all, a new group was coming in just a few minutes.

Finally, one of Gary’s associates came along to help and Gary explained to him his frustration.

Upon hearing the story, the associate remarked, “Gary, you can get upset with him if you want to, but it’s not his fault … because, you see, I know that young man … and I know that he only speaks Spanish. He does not understand a word of English!”

It helps if you understand the language. Love is the universal language and it is a language all of us understand. This brings to mind Gary Chapman’s bestselling book The Love Languages of God. We may love with words of affirmation, by giving quality time, by our gifts, by our acts of service or by physical touch. That is why Apostle Paul said love is the greatest gift of all.

Prayer: God of love, I praise your name. Help me to love others as you love me. In Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Bob passed away unexpectedly Saturday, October 6, 2012 in Kalamazoo.

Bob was born February 22, 1954 in Plainwell to Wallace ‘Wally’ and Margaret (Hughes) Watson and was a lifelong resident of the area. For over 30 years he was employed as a machine operator at ParkerHannifin Corp. and later worked at Prairiewood Golf Course for over 5 years. Bob was an avid Otsego sports fan and enjoyed coaching basketball, football, soccer and baseball. For over 20 years he served on the Otsego Fire Department, retiring as Assistant Fire Chief. He was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge #345 and in his leisure time he enjoyed deer and squirrel hunting. On August 10, 2002 he married Diane (Volker) Pearson, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and a daughter, Mark (Rena) Watson, Jim (Lisa) Watson and Kim (Mike) Jackson, all of Otsego; two step-children, Rebecca Pearson of Otsego and William ‘Chip’ Pearson of Parchment; his mother and step-dad, Margaret and Donald Crane of Douglas. Bob was a devoted grandfather to his eleven grandchildren, Cory, Brandon, Jaydon, Reece, Carson, Owen, Ryan, Addison, Molly, Brooklyn and Dillon, and loved attending as many of their school events as he could. He was preceded in death by his father and by his brother, Tony.

Funeral services were held Thursday October, 11th at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Stephen J. Burrow officiating.

Cremation followed. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

(formerly of Martin) Mr. Tandy passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012, in Kentwood. Mr. Tandy was born December 7, 1937 in Plainwell, the son of C. Allen and Julia Mae (Brown) Tandy. He was a 1956 graduate of Martin High school and attended Western Michigan University. He spent most of his life on Gun Lake, where he attended the Gun Lake Community Church. Gail collected coins and automobiles and enjoyed motorcycle riding and traveling, especially to his property in the Mackinaw City area. He listened to Jazz and Big Band music, was a huge MSU fan and was very active watching his grandkids sporting events. Surviving are 2 sons and 1 daughter, Gregory Allen (LuAnn) Tandy of Middleville, Laurie Ann (Craig) VanEck of Middleville, Trace Patrick Tandy of Blue Springs, MO; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 sisters and 1 brother, Georgia Mae (LeRoy ‘Babe’) Young of Traverse City, Alice Ploof Washtoak of Plainwell, Charles Thomas (Elaine) Tandy of Kalamazoo; 12 nieces and nephews; many lifelong friends in the Martin and Gun Lake areas. He was preceded in death by his parents, a niece Kathy and a nephew, Tommy.

Friends may meet with Gail’s family beginning 11 A.M. Saturday, October 13, 2012, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where funeral services will be held at 12 Noon with Pastor Mark Veldt officiating. Burial will follow at South Martin Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gun Lake Community Church.

Phyllis J. ‘Tootie’ GUTHRIE AGE 69 – OTSEGO

Phyllis passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo. Phyllis was born May 9, 1943 in Reynoldsville, PA, the daughter of William Clair and Kathryn (Martin) Guthrie. She had been employed at Parker Hannifin in Otsego and in Richland, retiring after more than 30 years.

After her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed reading, handheld games, working crossword puzzles and she followed the Detroit Lions. She is survived by her sister, Luella Eshbaugh of Otsego and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Norman ‘Pudge’ Guthrie. Cremation has taken place and no public services are being planned at this time. Contributions in memory of Phyllis may be made to Kairos Dwelling.
